The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly provides guidance in matters of halakhah for the Conservative movement. The individual rabbi, however, is the authority for the interpretation and application of all matters of halakhah. “We bury non-Jewish dead and comfort their mourners so that we follow the ways of peace” YD 370.1.2010. vkta: May a non-Jewish spouse or children of an interfaith marriage be buried in a separate section of a Jewish Cemetery? If so, what kind of ceremony should it be, and who should officiate at the ceremony? vcua,: These questions are being asked more and more frequently by our colleagues. The growing concern about these questions reflects the growing number of interfaith marriages in our Conservative communities. The recognition that life is finite and that death is a reality that must be anticipated and accepted is one of Judaism's most profound insights. Nonetheless, confronting our mortality and that of those dearest to us is one of life's most difficult tasks. For some, the subject of death is considered morbid. But if we fail to plan ahead and avoid making essential decisions, death catches us unprepared, confused and uncertain about what to do, making the process of mourning even more painful and burdensome. Jewish Cemeteries and Funeral Homes in Massachusetts by Alexander Woodle Jewish Cemeteries This listing of Jewish cemeteries in Massachusetts is derived from four main sources: the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts (JCAM), Jewish Cemeteries of Western Massachusetts by Rabbi Edward Cohen & Lewis Goldfarb (accessible through [email protected]), the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies’ (IAJGS) Cemetery Project www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/northamerica/massachusetts.html and Dunham’s Green Book of Funeral Directors of New England. The cemetery listings are by location and, where available, show earliest burial, ownership and contact information. Known sections sponsored by landsmanshaften (home town associations) are identified within cemeteries. We are extremely fortunate in Massachusetts to have excellent resources to find our deceased relatives. JCAM’s ownership and management of so many Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Massachusetts and the Western Massachusetts publication provide thousands of names and locations of our ancestors. JCAM’s website, www.jcam.org/ has maps of all the Jewish cemeteries in the state together with driving directions. Their database contains approximately 50,000 names. If you know that your relative is buried in one of JCAM owned cemeteries and the name does not come up in their online system, you can call them for assistance. JCAM publishes an annual book entitled Jewish Cemeteries that contains useful information on the cemeteries it owns or manages including maps and directions to all cemeteries. Sharon Memorial Park is New England’s largest Jewish cemetery, with over 34,000 burials as of 2007. The website www.sharonmemorial.com/ has a detailed and interesting history of this park. -

JEWISH TRADITIONS REGARDING DEATH & DYING AS PRACTICED AT CONGREGATION SHAARIE TORAH Mourning and Bereavement Funerals Remembrance of the Dead January 2008 To the Members of Congregation Shaarie Torah The text you are about to read was prepared and researched by Cliff Hockley. To Cliff my personal thank you for allowing me as the new Rabbi to infuse this page prior to its publication. Cliff took an enormous amount of time and careful effort in documenting our Jewish Heritage and traditions. The following booklet codifies and discusses the many traditions we have in Judaism regarding illness, death, burial and mourning. From a Jewish perspective each one of these components make up the path, we as Jews follow. As a Kohen (a member of the Tribe of Levi and descendent of the children of Aaron) I am only to attend seven funerals, relatives (father, mother, wife, brother, son, daughter, and sister if she is not married; Code of Jewish Law, Yoreh Dayah, 373:3). Should a Kohen become “impure” by coming in contact with a deceased person, he would be required to follow a seven day cleansing process, including bringing a sacrifice. Since the requirement to offer sacrifices cannot be upheld since we longer have a functioning Temple in Jerusalem, all Kohanim of today are basically impure and would be null and void from ancient rituals. On festivals and holy days we still have the only opportunity to present the Kohen in a symbol of ritual by allowing them the “Blessing of the People”. Having explained the dilemma that any rabbi that is born a Kohen has in officiating congregational funerals, I am making every effort to officiate at funerals and unveilings without coming in contact with the deceased i.e. -

A Jewish Guide to Funeral and Mourning Customs Introduction At no other time do we reach out more for wisdom, comfort and guidance from Jewish tradition than when we are confronted by death. So many emotions, some predictable, others unexpected, well up inside of us with a disorienting intensity. Even when the arrival of death is a relief from prolonged suffering or we thought we had prepared ourselves for the inevitable, we discover that the well of grief is deeper than we imagined. We Jews have a very distinctive approach to death, dying and bereavement. Judaism teaches that death is a natural part of life and something that reveals the preciousness of life. With its customs and practices, it helps us accept the finality of death in a healthy way. It encourages us to confront the reality of death and provides a structure with which to heal and find wholeness again. It gives us space to experience the full brunt of our grief and then nudges us carefully, patiently back into our everyday world. It shows us how to honor the memory of our loved one and how to act in the shadow of our loss when we feel so alone and so many eyes are watching us. This booklet is designed to help us answer questions and provide information about Jewish customs, practices and beliefs. The booklet is meant as a guide, not as the final word. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) DEVARIM _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah Inspiring Stories The fifth and final book of the Torah begins with the words eileh hadevorim , these are the words. Chazal have stated in a number of places that the use of the word eileh , these, without the prefix vav , indicates that what follows supersedes what came before it. In what way does Devorim supersede what preceded it? We can gain some insight, comments Rav Levi Yitzchok, from the words of the Zohar regarding the rule of Chazal that “if an element ( prat ) could have been subsumed as part of its general principle ( klal ) but was nonetheless presented on its own, it is meant to shed light on the entire principle.” Reading this rule in its mystical sense, the Zohar sees the general principle as the Torah withi n which resides the totality of all existence in all its details and elements. The element that has been singled out from this general principle is the narrative part of the Torah . The stories we are told are lengthy and elaborate, and they are certainly m eant to teach religious values and morals. The characters that populate these books are held up as paradigms of good and evil and the stories of their lives teach us valuable lessons. But all the numerous, seemingly extraneous details in these stories do n ot contribute to the teaching of these lessons.
