• Sikhism is the 5th most popular religion in the world. • The religion was founded by Guru Nanak in the 15th century. There are 10 gurus (teachers) in total. • Their religious temple is called a Gurdwara. • There are around 30 million practising Sikhs in the world. • They believe in only one god but this one god has no physical form. • Sikhs mainly live in India and the UK. • The Sikh faith has a focus on equality and serving others. LO: To understand the importance of symbols in religions.
Success Criteria: * I can understand what the Sikh symbol represents. * I can understand why symbols are important to people and groups. * I can think about what is important to me and create my own symbol. Think about these questions: 1. What is a symbol? 2. Why do we have symbols? 3. Why are they important? A symbol is an object or a picture that represents something else.
Symbols can communicate ideas of I information in a quick and visual way.
We use them all the time and they are everywhere! This is the symbol for Sikhism. It is Punjabi and means ‘Ik Ongar’
What do you think there is a symbol for Sikhism?
What do you think the symbol might mean? ‘Ik Ongar’ means there is only one God. This symbol is very important to Sikhs, just like a cross is to Christians.
