Dear parents, pupils and members of the community,

Welcome to our February newsletter and to the shortest half-term of the academic year. A Year 11 key date for your diary this half-term is:

 Thursday 17th March 2016 – Year 11 Parents’ Evening

Many thanks to Year 8 and 9 pupils who have made option choices – Mr Hepherd-Hall is currently working on these choices and will contact you in due course. Year 11 pupils are purchasing Leavers Hoodies that can be worn from after the Easter Break. There is also a Talent Show on 27th April 2016 where the new school skirt for Ye4ars 9-11 will be available for pupils to see.

We would also like to offer two new opportunities – one for parents and one for pupils.

I would like to offer all parents the opportunity to join me in a Parents’ Parliament. The intention is for parents and the school to have an informal opportunity to talk about what is going well in the school generally, and what needs to be addressed. It is not intended to replace Parents’ Evening, individual parent/school meetings, or formal complaints, and I am sure that parents will understand that individual pupils cannot be discussed within a forum such as the Parents’ Parliament. If you would like to get involved, please register your interest with Miss Murphy, at the academy. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 8th March 6-7pm. It will be very informal! The intention is to hold one meeting a term. I look forward to meeting you.

The second opportunity will be led by Mr Chell, and it is an opportunity for pupils to experience leadership coupled with their interest in a particular subject. We plan to offer Year 10 the opportunity to become Student Curriculum Leaders, and for Year 9 to become Assistant Curriculum Leaders. I hope that pupils will start to consider putting themselves forward for their favourite subjects. Please see Mr Chell for further details!

Many thanks for your support,

The Love Music Trust Cheshire East Schools’ Music Competition 2016

Venue (preliminary round): Ruskin High School-Crewe

Wednesday 3rd February 2016

6.30pm-8.30pm

Mr Clark would like to thank members of our Guitar Group & Vocal Group for their excellent performances at this years’ LMT Cheshire East Schools’ Competition.

It was commented upon by the Director of LMT how the groups had progressed musically. I believe it was the best both groups had performed & were a credit to themselves and Shavington Academy.

Although we did not qualify for the final, this by no means reflects the quality of performance & mature playing by our fabulous young musicians.

Please see the judge’s critiques from the evening’s event.

Well done team!

When West Indies' strike bowler would rather lose a match than run a batsman out for backing up too far

Twice world champions, West Indies were off the boil somewhat, though still formidable enough. Pakistan were early favourites to take their home World Cup and had won both their games up until then.

Four from kept West Indies down to a sub-par 216 in the first innings, and Pakistan were comfortable enough in pursuit at 92 for 3 and then 183 for 5. Then Walsh got rid of , who had shepherded the chase with a fifty, and Patrick Patterson's last over brought two runs and two wickets. Pakistan had lost four wickets for 20 runs. The boot was on the other foot.

Moment By the time it came to the last over, to be bowled by , West Indies looked to have it in the bag. Pakistan needed 14 runs off the six. took a single off the first ball and Saleem Jaffar another off the second, leaving 12 to get off four. Qadir, who had done nothing of significance with the ball then turned it on, hitting a two and then launching a straight six that drew the crowd roaring to its feet. They ran another two off the next ball, leaving two to get off the last. Walsh ran in to bowl the last ball and pulled up without delivering: Jaffar, at the non- striker's end, was well out of his crease, heading up the . Walsh could have run him out comfortably but chose not to do so and headed back to bowl the again. What happened next Qadir repaid the magnanimity by taking the necessary runs off the last ball. Pakistan were through and West Indies' chances of a semi-final place were in jeopardy. Walsh was deservedly feted for his sportsmanship (he even received a hand-woven carpet from a local fan). It was an act that has perhaps since become more famous than the match itself. PE Department

Badminton Tournament

‘Back last November, a team of 4 girls were put together to play a badminton tournament against schools in our local area. This was a very tough challenge for us. We played in two teams, along with singles, me (Amy Danskin), Emma Beresford, Courtney Williams and Shakira Langford. This was challenging as we hadn’t had much time to practice, however we worked as a team and successfully got through to the next round, by winning all but one game.

On Wednesday 27th January, we went to play at the University of Chester Academy, Northwich, in the level 3 Badminton tournament. This was against all schools from Cheshire. After practising for a bit, our confidence built up. We started off by playing singles against Alderley Edge, this was very tough as the girls played for a local club. Unfortunately, all four of us lost singles. However, when playing doubles, we improved due to our increased confidence. We lost but still kept o9ur heads high.

Our final match was our hardest against Queens from Chester. This was tough as they were a very strong, tactical team. However, we were more prepared, therefore all our games were very close, but we still lost by 2 points on most games. We were very grateful for this opportunity, we learnt new skills and have grown in confidence. It has challenged us for future games. Even though we lost it was an achievement for all of us’

CHESHIRE 5 A SIDE FOOTBALL FINALS. SO CLOSE!!!!

‘In our first game we played Great Sankey. These were a good team and we managed to win it 2-0. The team played really well and our goalkeeper Fin made some great saves. The goals came from Nj and myself. In our second game we played a really good school called Kings Chester. We managed to win this game 2-0 due to some great defending. The goal scorers were Aiden and again Nj. Our next game was against Weaverham. We won this 4-0 due to some great attacking play. Our goal scorers were Will, Luke Nj and me. At the back Tom did really well to not let any goals in. In our last game we played a brilliant school called Fallibroome. We needed 1 point to go through to the next round but we lost the game 2-1. We had chances to win the game but it just wouldn’t go in. Our goal scorer in this was Liam.’ - Connor O‘Riordan, 7VB

This club seeks to celebrate readers, reading and stories, generally. We are open to all years and anyone who enjoys the written word. In the reading club, we discuss genres, characterisation, the importance of reading, dialogue, and structure along with what we are currently reading, our favourite authors and texts. Biscuits are also available to bibliophiles. Please join us every Thursday at lunchtime in E5.

Why is reading important? “I love reading! It takes me to a whole new world, whether it is an adventure, comedy, horror, family, or whatever else there is. Reading is the most important thing to me because although you can have fun with reading, it also helps you to learn grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Reading makes me feel like I am in that world, where I can escape reality when it is tough. I love reading. Don’t you? “ Caitlyn Murrell, Year 7D “My opinion is that reading is fun, emotional and educational. I love reading different books and discovering their depths. There are a great many amazing authors to choose from and sometimes the oldest stories are the most enjoyable.” Holly Preston, 7B “I love reading as it is a very necessary skill. Some people are naturals and some people aren’t. But no matter what level you are, persevere, and you will gain the ability to read books that inspire you so that you will believe, “Yes, I can do anything!” Life wouldn’t be the same without words leaping off pages and into the minds of humans. We need reading skills. We need words. We need books to help us think outside the box. Outside our worlds and lives. We need books.” Joanna Underwood, 7D Attendance Update

As I am sure you are aware good attendance is crucial when it comes to a child’s achievement and academic progress. Therefore the government has raised the bar on this and any child who has attendance below 90% will be considered to be persistently absent. This is a 5% rise from previous years where persistent absence was considered to be below 85% by the Department of Education The national target for all schools and every child in a school is that attendance should be above 95.5% if there is to be no detrimental impact on a child’s progress.

Attendance Rewards To show how much we value good attendance we are introducing a number of incentives for pupils. This includes rewarding the form group with the highest attendance with a trophy each week. The form with the highest attendance over a half term in years 7-9 will be rewarded with an hour off timetable during the last week of ahalf term with a member of the pastoral team undertaking reward activities. Those with 100% attendance will be given a certificate at the end of each term and go into a prize draw for a big money prize at the end of the year. Attendance support At Shavington we monitor the attendance of all our pupils closely and if a pupil’s attendance falls below 90% then we may take certain actions to support a child and their family to raise their school attendance. This may include:  Invitation to an attendance group where we discuss with pupils the importance of good attendance  Inviting parents and their child in to speak to a member of the pastoral team to see what more can be done to support better attendance or what extra interventions the school needs to implement to support your child from falling behind.  Include referrals to outside agencies such as family support or NHS services.  10 or more unauthorised absences may be subject to a fixed penalty notice. Holidays

Due to a change in legislation from September 2013 we are unable to grant authorisation for holidays or leave unless the circumstances are exceptional. We will consider all applications and if the reason for leave is due to an important exceptional one off event, an equivalent educational activity, a genuine work commitments that prevent holidays at any other time or extreme personal circumstances then the Head Teacher has the authority, by law, to authorise absence.

If you wish to clarify whether your circumstances are likely to be authorised please contact Mrs Skelding, Assistant Headteacher.

All requests for authorised absence need to be completed on one of our school forms and we will ask for evidence of your exceptional circumstances. The importance of Attendance

In total, there are 175 non-school days a year. This gives families the opportunity to:  Spend time together  Go on family visits  Go on holiday  Go shopping  Go on days out  Attend routine appointments

 10 days absence means 95% attendance  19 days absence means 90% attendance  29 days absence means 85% attendance  38 days absence means 80% attendance  47 days absence means 75% attendance Pupil Stories

FOOTBALL HOTSHOT IZZY IS FLYING HIGH WITH SANDBACH EAGLES

Football hotshot Izzy Mason is flying high with her football club Sandbach Eagles. The midfield maestro plays for the club’s under 13’s ladies team which has soared to top spot in the Sandbach Girls League.

Shavington Academy Year 7 pupil Izzy is loving getting stuck into 9-a-side matches every weekend and being part of a successful team. She has gone from strength to strength since taking up the game a year ago after being spurred on by her cousin.

Izzy attends team training sessions each week before she shows off her skills on a Saturday morning in matches. Chelsea fan Izzy, of Wistaston, said: “It’s great being top of the league and I’m really enjoying my football.

“I wasn’t too sure what to expect at first but there’s a really good team spirit and all the girls love playing and get on well together.

“I’ve played in all the games so far this season although I still haven’t scored yet so that’s my next goal!”

Izzy eats, breathes and sleeps football and is hoping she can follow in the footsteps of other young ladies who have gone on to represent England in the future. She added: “Playing for England would be fantastic and that’s my dream but at the moment I’m just making the most of playing each week and seeing where it takes me.” Pupil Stories

LIAM MAKES IT THREE OUT OF THREE CROSS COUNTRY WINS

An energetic Shavington Academy pupil is making giant strides in cross country after winning three separate races. Year 7 pupil Liam Prestwick celebrated first places finishes when he lined up against youngsters his own age from other schools in the area.

Liam has a 100 per cent record in all three events he has taken part in and has left the field trailing behind over the one and a quarter mile tracks. The 11-year-old has done Shavington Academy proud in the events which have attracted competitors from Sandbach Boys School, Malbank School and Brine Leas and Alsager High Schools.

Liam is a member of the Crewe and Nantwich Athletics Club and he puts a lot of training and a will to win down to his impressive running form. Liam, of Wistaston, said: “I love running but I didn’t expect to do so well against good runners from other schools.

“I’ve taken part in three cross country races and I’ve won all three so I feel proud of my achievement.

“I’m hoping I can go on and win lots more races in the future but I’m just staying focused on training hard and taking each race as it comes.” Pupil Stories

BMX BIKER LUKE IS ON TRACK FOR BRIGHT FUTURE

A rising BMX star is on track for a successful future as he mixes it with other bikers in the Blackpool Winter Series. Shavington Academy pupil Luke Davies-Hayes is on the final lap of this season’s winter competition which has seen him scoop silverware and improve his riding skills.

The 11-year-old is a member of the Cheshire Ghost Riders which is based at the Shanaze Reade BMX track in Crewe. Luke attends the Blackpool track once a month to compete in the winter series and has to negotiate rough terrain, jumps and other bikers each time he takes to the starting point at each event. Year 7 pupil Luke has already had a few second and third place finishes in the Series but is aiming to win an event before the season draws to a close. An overall prize for the biker who accumulates the biggest points tally is handed out at the end of the series.

Luke, of Nantwich, said: “I absolutely love my BMX and taking part in the winter series in Blackpool has been a great experience for me.

“It gives you the chance to show what you can do when you’re on the track against other bikers and it’s a lot of fun.”

Shanaze Reade is a professional British Bicycle Motorcross racer and track cyclist who was born in Crewe and who has won the UCI BMX World Championships three times. Luke has had to toughen up since he first took to the wheels and admits that although racing is fun it can have its scary moments. He added: “I’ve come off my bike a few times and it hurts but you just have to pick yourself up and get on with it because it happens to everyone at some point.

“My ambition is to go and get more experience in competitions and take part in the Youth Olympics in the future.” What has been happening?

Charity Cake Sale

On Friday 12th February Shavington Academy held a big cake sale to raise money for the Variety Children’s club charity and for the year 11 leaver’s prom.

Abbie Strickland Buckle (11LF) organised the Cake sale and collected lots of cakes to sell including, Cupcakes, Doughnuts, Iced Buns, Fairy Cakes and Biscuits.

All cakes were sold out by the end of lunch time and we raised a massive £150! Abbie would like to thank all the pupils who spent time baking and kindly donated their cakes and everyone who supported the event by coming along to buy a cake.

We are very proud of Abbie who took the time to organise the cake sale and wish her well with her further fundraising for The Variety Club charity.

Also on the same day the Student Ambassadors chose to organise a non-uniform day and donate all of the money raised to further much needed equipment for our new school Gym.

All together we raised a total of £510 which is going to be spent on two new exercise bikes and two additional treadmills. Pupils use the Gym in their P.E lessons and it is also open every lunch time for anyone who wishes to use the equipment. These two photographs have been found. They are pictures of a Prom at Crewe Alex, but what was the year, and who are these students? If you know, please contact the school! Even better if you can tell us what they’re doing now. SCHOOL CALENDAR 2015 - 2016 To enable parents and carers to plan holidays and child care cover for the academic year, please find below details of the School’s Calendar showing term dates and inset days.

The Government has recently announced that schools will be able to set their own Term Dates from September 2015. We would like to reassure all parents/guardians that we will be following the Cheshire East model and, as much as possible, local primary schools in the area.
