Designer’s Note Project Stakeholders I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who worked together to make this project possible. First and foremost, thanks to Gian Pangaro and Luke Woods for their guidance. It was because of their flexibility and professional wisdom that I was able to further extend the value of this educational journey to reflect on my project process at regular intervals. Secondly, remote conversations with Richard Banks were invaluable to inject fresh perspective from the field of digital humanities. Further, the openness and contribution from the professionals, family, and social network of peers that contributed allowed me to go deep in research. MEMORALITY: THE FUTURE OF OUR DIGITAL SELVES | 2013 i Introduction Physical Death & Digital Life In this increasingly digital world, is it intentional that we only plan for the future of our physical selves? If not, then how can we sustain a residual presence after we are gone— if that’s even what we want? How can we have a legacy that will matter to future generations? Abstract Digital Immortality or Not? The aim of this thesis was to explore how we might be stew- ards for our post-life digital self after physical death, and to provide a new interaction experience in the form of a tan- gible, digital, or service design solution. Prior to the project kick-off secondary research, including academic research papers, analogous services, and existing projects, was distilled to form topical questions. These ques- tions were then presented in many casual topical conversa- tions and revealed that although post-life digital asset man- agement awareness is increasing, little consideration exists on how to reflect legacies into the future long after death.     Contemporary Mourning and Digital Estates Angela Galvan User experience and design, law, and philosophy have discussed the fate of individuals’ web and social medial presence after death for some time.1 This residual, postmortem presence is our digital estate. As the theoretical implications of digital estates continue to gain attention, librarians and information professionals of all kinds will engage practical questions about this topic from survivors. This chapter has three functional purposes. First, to situate the digital estate within the current cultural experience of death and mourning in the United States; second, to offer introductory guidance for information professionals to proactively engage community members on this topic before one’s own death; and third, to assist information professionals as bereaved patrons try to make meaning from the digital estate of the deceased. Contemporary Mourning Physical death is for the most part sequestered or separated from our everyday experience in the United States. Our “engagement with death is increasingly mediated by a series of institutional and professional practices.”2 We encounter physical death in predictable ways: through end-of- life care, memorials, and cemeteries. Through a review of the current literature exploring how social media are being used as a new space to grieve and mourn, this paper contributes to the literature by arguing for the need for clarity in the lexicon being used by thanatologists and other disciplines. Furthermore, it introduces the term “digital zombie” to describe the dead who remain “alive” in our digital society. Both Taiwan and Japan are entering into an area of hyper aged and death-ridden society. However, little is known about technology use by the bereaved. This thesis contributes to understanding this phenomenon through three linked studies. These studies establish an appreciation of how technology engages with human mortality, and proposes \thanatosensitive design" (TSD) as an approach for developing such systems. An exploratory study first examines technology use by the bereaved through a survey with follow-up interviews. Findings show that systems for inheriting data and devices are lacking, despite widespread use of technology for remembrance and communication. Using digital assets in social support is selected as a domain for further inquiry. The second study consists of focus groups with bereaved parents at two community organizations complemented by the perspectives of professional bereavement workers. Based on this fieldwork, 6 considerations concerning interpersonal communication, new ways of being, and materiality are presented. These considerations suggest that systems should permit connections with peers, support storytelling activities, and avoid tenden- cies to “fix” grief, among others. In the final study, I present Besupp - a website that permits bereaved users to en- gage in online peer-support groups. Besupp applied these design considerations and was deployed in a 10-week study.

Current rituals of mourning have evolved using technology as a medium, but research in improving user experiences in the field of thanatosensitivity (a research field on death and technology) is limited. A diary study and semi-structured interviews were conducted to find design considerations that can be suggested to improve the user’s digital interactions. This study identified that the younger generation is unconsciously comfortable with technology, whereas the older generation is uncomfortable trusting it. Although there are differences between these two generations, their desire for continuing to bond beyond death and to leave a life experience legacy are the same. As a result, four primary design considerations were suggested for products in this field: familiarity, continuing bond, flexibility, and affective-cognitive experience. Also, flexibility in design is desired, particularly in terms of portability and being able to connect globally. Lastly, the sensorial connection has been seen in both generations.
