CPSA Amendment: Consumers Taken for a Ride? Elliot Klayman* Louis Goodman** A 1981 amendment to the Consumer Product Safety Act exemptsftxed site amuse- ment ridesfrom the ambit of the Act. That exemption, this Article asserts,is largely a resultofindustry lobbying ratherthan logic or consistency and will have deleterious effects upon those consumers the Act originally was designed to protect. I. INTRODUCTION LIKE MANY OTHER federal agencies, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was scrutinized by Congress during consideration of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981.1 Although the CPSC was ultimately reauthorized, its budget was sharply reduced,' and its powers and procedures were drastically altered.' English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411). -

Autobiographies: Psychoanalysis and the Graphic Novel
AUTOBIOGRAPHIES: PSYCHOANALYSIS AND THE GRAPHIC NOVEL PARASKEVI LYKOU PHD THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND RELATED LITERATURE JANUARY 2014 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the conjunction of the graphic novel with life- writing using psychoanalytic concepts, primarily Freudian and post- Freudian psychoanalysis, to show how the graphic medium is used to produce a narrative which reconstructs the function of the unconscious through language. The visual language is rich in meaning, with high representational potential which results in a vivid representation of the unconscious, a more or less raw depiction of the function of the psychoanalytic principles. In this project I research how life-writing utilises the unique representational features of the medium to uncover dimensions of the internal-self, the unconscious and the psyche. I use the tools and principles of psychoanalysis as this has been formed from Freud on and through the modern era, to propose that the visual language of the graphic medium renders the unconscious more accessible presenting the unconscious functionality in a uniquely transparent way, so that to some extent we can see parts of the process of the construction of self identity. The key texts comprise a sample of internationally published, contemporary autobiographical and biographical accounts presented in the form of the graphic novel. The major criterion for including each of the novels in my thesis is that they all are, in one way or another, stories of growing up stigmatised by a significant trauma, caused by the immediate familial and/or social environment. Thus they all are examples of individuals incorporating the trauma in order to overcome it, and all are narrations of constructing a personal identity through and because of this procedure. -

Listen on today's episode I am talking about the local fair. You remember the local fair when you were a child, perhaps maybe there was a local fair in your community as there is all over the world and all over this country and I want to tell you a little more about it starting right now. Well, some people say the fair is the pinnacle of their spring and summer outings and their family outings and what they do with their friends and family on perhaps a weekday night or a weekend night when there is not much going on. But let me tell you something where I grew up the fair or the local fair or the carnival was a wonderful thing to have and to do because I grew up in a neighborhood where there wasn't a lot to do, but let me start with a little history on the local fair or carnival as it's sometimes called. Well, a local fair or carnival is traveling entertainment with sideshows rides and especially one that visits places at the same time each year. Well, it's true. Every spring we would have the same fair going on. It's an event including amusement rides and sales of goods, especially for charity, a bizarre and great food, which we'll talk about a little later on. -

Scandinavia Since the entrance to the park is causing a significant change to the layout and attractions to Scandinavia please be aware this entry will not be entirely accurate until the park opens in spring 2017 Scandinavia Main Gate 2017-current In 2017 the entire Scandinavian gate was rebuilt and redesigned, complete with the iconic Worlds of Fun hot air balloon, and Guest Relations that may be entered by guests from both inside and outside the park. The new gate replaces the original Scandinavian gate built in 1973 and expanded in 1974 to serve as the park's secondary or back gate. With the removal of the main Americana gate in 1999, the Scandinavian gate began serving as the main gate. Representations of Intersex People in Circus and Sideshow Novels
Networking Knowledge 10(3)Sex and Sexualities in Popular Culture (Oct. 2017) The Hidden Sex: Representations of Intersex People in Circus and Sideshow Novels NAOMI FRISBY, Sheffield Hallam University ABSTRACT Despite being the hidden sex in society, intersex people with ambiguous genitalia are visible in a number of circus and sideshow novels. These characters are often used as plot devices, performing a stable gender identity whilst concealing their intersex status for the sake of the plot. They are portrayed as deceptive and licentious, their identities placing them outside of the sex and gender binaries and leaving them dehumanised. It is only in Pantomime by Laura Lam that the possibility of an alternative portrayal is glimpsed, although questions regarding the sex and gender binaries and non-normative sexuality remain. KEYWORDS Intersex, Gender, Performativity, Sexuality, Literature Introduction The US publishing industry came under scrutiny in 2015 due its failure to offer a true reflection of the society in which we live. A ‘Diversity Baseline Survey’ (2015) conducted by the publisher Lee & Low Books sought to explain why, in the past twenty years, the number of diverse books published in the USA never exceeded an average of 10%. The authors of the survey drew a correlation between the high percentage of white (80), cis (98.7), heterosexual (88.2), non-disabled (92.8) people working in the publishing industry and the lack of broad representation in published books. One genre in which we might expect to find a diverse range of characters is circus and sideshow literature. The circus has been seen as a safe space for those who fall outside of mainstream society, particularly those with non-normative bodies1.
