WATCH HERE BARBARA GAINES ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER Barbara Gaines founded Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 1986, and in its 35 years the company has redefined what a great American Shakespeare theater can be. Under her leadership, the Regional Tony Award-winning theater’s year-round season has evolved to feature as many as twenty productions and 650 performances—including plays, musicals, world premieres, family programming, and presentations from around the globe. Chicago Shakespeare is the city’s leading presenter of international work, and has toured its own productions across five continents. The Theater’s nationally acclaimed arts in literacy programs support the work of teachers, and bring Shakespeare to life on stage for tens of thousands of students annually. Each summer, the company tours a free professional production to neighborhood parks across Chicago. Barbara Gaines has directed nearly sixty productions at Chicago Shakespeare, including thirty of Shakespeare’s plays. Among her many honors and achievements are the 2008 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, the prestigious Honorary OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in recognition of her contributions strengthening British-American cultural relations, the Making History Award, as well as multiple Joseph Jefferson Awards for Best Production and for Best Director. Ms. Gaines has directed at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-on-Avon, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and The Old Globe in San Diego. chicagoshakes.com BARBARA GAINES CRISS HENDERSON ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER Criss Henderson has produced the Chicago Shakespeare Theater's past thirty seasons. Under his leadership, the Theater has become one of Chicago's most celebrated cultural organizations and a leading American regional theater, honored with the 2008 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, as well as multiple Laurence Olivier and Joseph Jefferson Awards. He oversaw the Theater’s move to its home on Navy Pier in 1999 and led the recent development of The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare. In 2016, he spearheaded the citywide, yearlong celebration of Shakespeare’s legacy, Shakespeare 400 Chicago. Criss Henderson has garnered multiple honors, including: the 2013 Cultural Innovation Award from the Chicago Innovation Awards; Arts Administrator of the Year by Arts Management Magazine at the Kennedy Center; recognition in Crain’s Chicago Business “40 under 40”; and the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture of France. In 2019, with Barbara Gaines, he was honored with the Making History Award, given to Chicagoans whose contributions to the city have made it “a better and more vibrant place to live.” Criss Henderson has served on the boards of directors of the League of Chicago Theatres and Arts Alliance Illinois, and for many years as president of the Producers’ Association of Chicago-area Theaters. Mr. Henderson is director of DePaul University’s MFA/Arts Leadership Program, a two-year graduate-level curriculum in arts management training created through a joint partnership between Chicago Shakespeare Theater and The Theatre School. chicagoshakes.com CRISS HENDERSON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MEIANN CHEN CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER MUSIC DIRECTOR, CHICAGO SINFONIETTA Innovation, imagination, passion and dynamism are the hallmarks of Taiwanese-American conductor Mei-Ann Chen. Music Director of the MacArthur Award-winning Chicago Sinfonietta since 2011, Ms. Chen is Austria's Recreation Grosses Orchester Graz first-ever Principal Guest Conductor, the first-ever Artistic Partner of Houston’s River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO), and Artistic Director & Conductor for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Summer Festival. A sought-after guest conductor acclaimed for infusing orchestras with energy, enthusiasm, high-level music-making, and galvanizing audiences and communities alike, Ms. Chen’s reputation as a compelling communicator has resulted in growing popularity with orchestras worldwide. She has appeared with distinguished orchestras throughout the Americas, Europe, and Scandinavia. Upcoming highlights include debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Austria's Tonkünstler in Vienna's Musikverein, and engagements with Finland's Helsinki Philharmonic, Ireland's Ulster Orchestra, Sweden's Norrlandsosper, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Taiwan Philharmonic. Maestra Chen will also serve on the jury for the prestigious Malko Competition in 2021. Honors and awards include being named one of Musical America’s 2015 Top 30 Influencers, the 2012 Helen M. Thompson Award from the League of American Orchestras, the 2007 Taki Concordia Fellowship founded by Marin Alsop; 2005 First Prize Winner of the Malko Competition (first woman to win in the history of the competition), and ASCAP awards for innovative programming. Ms. Chen is Conductor Laureate of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra after serving as Music Director 2010 – 2016. Born in Taiwan, Ms. Chen came to the United States to study violin in 1989. She holds master’s degrees in violin and conducting from New England Conservatory and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at the University of Michigan. BLAKEANTHONY JOHNSON MEIANN CHEN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, MUSIC DIRECTOR, CHICAGO SINFONIETTA CHICAGO SINFONIETTA The first African American executive to guide a nationally renowned orchestra, in May 2020 Blake-Anthony Johnson was named Chief Executive Officer at the age of 29 of the award-winning Chicago Sinfonietta, an organization acclaimed as a cultural leader in the field and a powerful champion of diversity, equity and inclusion. A civically engaged leader who sits on the Steering Committee of Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, he is also a champion of arts education, and is a member of the Faculty at Roosevelt University’s Chicago Conservatory of Performing Arts. A former professional cellist who has performed with renowned ensembles and music festivals in the US and Europe, Mr. Johnson’s focus on arts administration and education began while he was a music student at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Prior to his appointment, Johnson served as the Director of Learning and Community for the Louisville Orchestra. Mr. Johnson has worked in arts education and outreach with such organizations as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, El Sistema, and the Academia Filarmónica de Medellín. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Blake-Anthony Johnson holds a MM from Cleveland State University, a BM from Vanderbilt University, Blair School of Music, and a certificate from Manhattan School of Music in Orchestral Performance. Further professional training includes participation in the Sphinx Organization’s two-year arts leadership program LEAD (Leaders in Excellence, Arts & Diversity, 2019-present), workshops in education, community engagement and collective bargaining at The League of American Orchestra’s 2018 Conference and a Certificate of Study in American Law from the University of Pennsylvania.
