With Hollywood Productions on Hold, Documentary Filmmakers Keep Going - the New York Times5/12/2020 With Hollywood Productions on Hold, Documentary Filmmakers Keep Going - The New York Times https://nyti.ms/3fqZpDz With Hollywood Productions on Hold, Documentary Filmmakers Keep Going Ron Howard has been overseeing a nonfiction film from afar, while other documentarians have gone into the coronavirus epicenter. By Nicole Sperling May 8, 2020 Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer know about putting themselves at risk for their work. While they were shooting thousands of hours of footage for “The Square,” the 2013 documentary directed by Ms. Noujaim and produced by Mr. Amer on the popular uprising in Cairo, they were often in the middle of the action in Tahrir Square, where the military shot protesters and dispersed crowds with tear gas. Some of their footage was confiscated, and Ms. Noujaim was arrested and held for 36 hours. Now, amid the coronavirus pandemic, conditions are arguably more difficult, they said. “At the height of the revolution, things got pretty chaotic and our office was raided,” Mr. Amer said. “That was a visible threat. You knew when the army was coming for you. This is not like anything we’ve seen before. This is an invisible threat that’s affecting every single member of the production team.” Still, Ms. Noujaim and Mr. Amer have managed to keep going at a time when Hollywood has closed down film and television productions. The original film and the HBO sequel, Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000), raised serious questions about whether Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who became known as the “West Memphis Three,” were truly guilty of the murders. Begun in 2004, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, the final installment of the trilogy, featured compelling new interviews with the West Memphis Three and key players, and covers new developments in the case that were unavailable during the original trials. After premiering at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, the film was expanded to include the dramatic release of the three men before it screened at the New York Film Festival.

Stephen Erlewine has noted that, although Elton John has endured temporary slumps in creativity and sales, he continues to craft contemporary pop standards that showcase his musical versatility. John's combination of melodic skills, dynamic charisma, and raucous performance style has made him a remarkably popular musical artist. Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, England on March 25, 1947. Dwight began playing piano at age four and, when he was eleven, won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. After six years at school, he left in order to break into the music business. In 1961 he joined his first band, Bluesology, but left in 1966 because of creative differences with bandleader Long John Baldry. During this time Dwight had answered a Liberty Records advertisement for songwriters; and, though he failed the vocal audition, he was given a stack of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, a young songwriter from Lincolnshire who had also answered the ad.
