It is, in this sense, a conflict of ontology and aesthetics: ghosts flutter around us, in and out of our dimension (Bourriaud, 2016; Morton, 2013), and, as Poe would say, “man” is being driven mad by the heartbeats heard through the floorboards. This study addresses two main ideas: (a) that it is the modern subject that is the anthropos of the Anthropocene, and (b) that we must further conceptualise claims about the ‘end of the world’ (Morton, 2013). Ultimately, however, both these claims are intimately linked: the ‘subject’ and the ‘world’ in modernity cannot be separated from each other, and are indeed part of the same process (Mbembe, 2003). -

Caldwell, Chair This dissertation traces the entrance of the financial industries – particularly private equity firms, corporate venture capital, and institutional investors – along with their corresponding financial logic and labor, into the film, television, and music industries from 2004-2016. Financialization – the growing influence of financial markets and instruments – is premised on highly-leveraged debt, labor efficiencies, and short-term profits; this project argues that it is transforming cultural production into a highly consolidated industry with rising inequality, further decreasing the diversity and heterogeneity it could provide the public sphere. In addition to charting this historical and industrial shift, this project analyzes the corresponding textual transformation, in which cultural products behave according to financial logic, becoming sites of capital formation where references, homages, and product placements form internal economies. The concept of ‘derivative media’ I employ to capture this phenomenon contains a double meaning: ii increasingly, the production process of popular culture ‘derives’ new content from old (sequels, adaptations, franchises, remakes, references, homages, sampling, etc.), just as the economic logic behind contemporary textuality behaves like a ‘derivative,’ a financial instrument to hedge risk. -

Issue 117 AUGUST 10TH, 2020 This was the hardest issue I’ve ever had to put together. Not because the writers were late on copy (quite the contrary), or things went awry in production – it was because the events of the week leading up to Issue 117 were crazy. I had to take care of a sudden major family health issue involving a hospital and a PT rehab center. (She’s going to be OK.) Then hurricane Isaias hit Long Island and we lost power. (One fallen tree barely missed our house.) In the middle of this I developed a vision problem in my left eye. A very large floater that looks like a big grayish-black squiggle; the doc said to see him immediately but concluded, “it’s not dangerous.” (It’s gradually getting better, and I look forward to the day when people won’t say “that was when he had one good eye.”) I had to find someplace that had internet in order to work. Happily my friend Fran Resvanis came through and I made the hour-plus round trip to their house for two days. Then my wife's place of business got power back, and now here I am in a veterinarian's office. Luckily I haven't been asked to assist with emergency dog surgery. Through it all, we've had to make sure our deaf and almost blind pug has been taken care of. The gist of it: hours and hours of lost time, major disruption of life and work, and pinning-the-meter stress. -

GEORGIA IMAGINED, GEORGIA ILLUSTRATED: READING THE LANDSCAPE, 1717-1859 by CHRISTOPHER ROLAND LAWTON (Under the Direction of John C. Inscoe) ABSTRACT This dissertation is built around William and T. Addison Richards’s Georgia Illustrated (1842), the first travel book about the Deep South to be written and published within the region. To create a context for understanding the book and its authors, I begin by exploring how and what antebellum non-Southerners thought they knew about the state. The first two chapters trace the roots of their shared knowledge to 18th- and early-19th century travel texts in which Georgia was repeatedly documented as an idea rather than a reality. Through this process outside observers cast the state as a distant and dangerous Other in order to reify their own sense of self and home. I then use this construct to examine Georgia Illustrated through a post-colonial lens, as a case study of how one set of residents found a voice, imagined themselves as they wanted to be seen, and responded. The meaning of Georgia Illustrated is inextricably intertwined with the lives of its authors and their history in the now-forgotten college town of Penfield. To tell this story is to reconstruct the world of the bookstore their family operated there, the role of books in their lives, and their lives in what was, at the time, an aspirational cultural and intellectual center. Perhaps most importantly, it is also to reveal a fleeting moment of antebellum possibility. Georgia Illustrated not only promoted the state’s landscape as being as quintessentially American as Northeastern locales, but also dismissed regional stereotypes by proclaiming the existence of a vibrant Southern intelligentsia.
