VOLUME 326 / FEBRUARY 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE YOUTH CHAPLAIN

Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus (Phil 2:5)

Greetings in the matchless name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, As we are entering into the lent season from February 26, let us meditate on the verse from Philippians 2:5. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Here Paul is reiterating to have the same mindset as of Christ. What is the mindset of Christ? Paul says in v6, “Jesus who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage, rather, he made himself nothing and took the form of a servant made in human likeness.” This is very relevant for us today. Today we witness people wishing and even demanding for positions and power. This kind of power hunger does no good but only spoils relationship, but here Jesus is rejecting His position of being God and taking the form of a servant, which is what we are called out for. Secondly He humbled himself (Philippians 2:8). Humbleness is the very nature of Jesus. The desire to lift up and exalt ourselves beyond our place as God’s creature lies at the heart of pride. We are influenced by socio-technological changes that are taking place around us, which in turn has changed our very nature. Humility and the humbling of oneself is out of fashion in today’s world and seems unappealing to most of us. However, as Jonathan Edwards said, “We must view humility as one of the most essential things that characterizes true Christianity.” Our perspective on humility can be radically changed if we will ponder and meditate on the greatest example of humility in history: Jesus Christ. Thirdly He was obedient till death (continuation of v8). The obedience of Christ marked Him in every step of His pathway in this world, and it was "even unto death, and that the death of the cross." Obedience to God is very important for our Christian growth. How is our obedience in relationship with the word of God? We listen to the Word of God but are we really incorporating what we hear in our daily lives and in our relationship with others? In the gospel of John, obedience to God is underscored time and time again. John 14:15 says, "If you love me, you will obey what I command." I thank the Almighty for His blessings showered on us in Harvest 2017. Congratulations to all the people who have labored hard behind organizing this event. May God bless all the parish members for their contributions and participation. Our children are preparing for their board 10th and 12th exams. Let us pray for all children who are appearing for their exams. Children, study with faith and remember that the Holy Spirit is a great teacher. And therefore listen carefully and always obey. The church is preparing for electing suitable candidates to be ordained as bishops. We are also on the verge of electing new office bearers for the year 2017-2018. Let us pray to God for giving us suitable leaders according to His will. Around us, we see many people going through different crisis situations. When we know of friends who are going through a bad patch, let us be an agent of His hope by witnessing Christ to them. Let our words and our prayers for them be a source of comfort and strengthen them. May God bless you all. Yours in His service Rev. Roby J. Mathew

There are some facts that will never change. One fact is that you are forgiven. If you are in Christ, when he sees you, your sins are covered-he doesn't see them. He sees you better than you see yourself. - Max Lucado FROM THE PARISH SECRETARY

Forgive, forget. Bear with the faults of others as you would have them bear with yours. Be patient and understanding. Life is too short to be vengeful or malicious. - Phillips Brooks From the Medical Desk… HEALTH AWARENESS by Dr. Abey Abraham MALARIA

MALARIA is a disease caused by parasitic protozoan which are transmitted by mosquitoes. The protozoan are single celled microorganisms and are called plasmodium. The female Anopheles mosquito transmits the parasite while biting. The parasites from the mosquito saliva enter the persons blood and reach the liver and reproduce. 5 species of plasmodium affect humans and the most deadly is plasmodium falciparum. In 2015 , 214 million cases of Malaria occurred worldwide with 438000 deaths ( 90 % in Africa). The symptoms of malaria include fever, fatigue, vomiting, headaches, and can progress to seizures , coma and even death. Paroxysm of fever followed by shivering and sweating occur classically. Cerebral Malaria is a rare complication and presents as seizures, visual defects and even coma. Diagnosis is by microscopic examination of blood and also by diagnostic kits. Prevention of mosquito bites is very important using nets or insect repellents (odomos). Spraying insecticide and draining standing water in and around homes also help. Preventive medications while travelling to areas that have malaria is also helpful. Mefloquine is one such medication which can be easily taken once per week 2 weeks before travel and 4 weeks after returning. Doxycycline is an alternative that is cheaper but can be taken daily and 1 -2 days before travel. Unfortunately no Vaccine yet exists although research is ongoing. The treatment of Malaria includes treatment of symptoms like fever and pain and also the administration of anti malaria medications to kill the protozoan. Artemisinin, chloroquine, primaquine mefloquine are all drugs used in malaria. Malaria the word is derived from Mala aria –meaning bad air from its association with swamps and Marsh land . A Scottish physician Dr Ronald Ross worked in Calcutta and proved the association of the mosquito with this disease and received the Nobel prize for his work in 1902. A Chinese researcher Dr Tu Youyou , studied ancient herbal medicine books written in AD340 and discovered Artemisinin which is one of most important malaria medicines She also received the Nobel in 2015.
