Welcome back to the Arts Club’s Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre for our holiday production of Ginna Hoben’s The Twelve Dates of Christmas.

As you are no doubt aware, these have been difficult times, and for all not-for- profit performing arts charities across the nation, this has been a year of staggering heartbreak. At the Arts Club, we’re proud to be staging productions, no matter how restricted our audience size must be. But we also know that this structure is not sustainable in the long run.

We remain optimistic that there will be light at the end of the tunnel soon. And your decision to be present with us today—to take in and participate in live theatre as part of your life—makes that light brighter. Thank you.

While 2020 was not what anyone expected it to be, one thing remains constant: our need for connection—as evidenced by your attendance here. At the Arts Club, we know the importance of storytelling and community building. Over the past year, we’ve given much thought to how we might emerge from this pandemic as a stronger company. New opportunities have presented themselves, as have many challenges.

This holiday season we need your support.

We have set an ambitious goal of raising $140,000 for our end-of-year fundraising campaign. The money we raise will enable us to continue to offer theatre productions (both in person and digitally), commission and develop audio plays from local playwrights, and develop new digital content.

The Playwright

Ginna Hoben is an actor/writer based in New York. The Twelve Dates of Christmas is among her four produced plays, including the solo show pierced! (New York International Fringe Festival [2002] and The Edinburgh Festival Fringe [2004]), the full-length play the wind-chill factor, and the ten-minute play telephone, published in the collection 30 Ten-Minute Plays for 4, 5, and 6 Actors.

Favourite acting credits include: Next Fall; The 39 Steps; Proof; Almost, Maine; and the world premiere of Richard Dresser’s What Are You Afraid Of? (Humana Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville). Recently, among the nineteen plays she performed at The American Shakespeare Center, favourite roles include Kate in The Taming of the Shrew, Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and Mary in the World Premiere of The Twelve Dates of Christmas.

The Arts Club Theatre Company is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), The Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance, and the BC Alliance for Arts and Culture, and operates under the jurisdiction of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.

Pre-Production personnel and stage crew are members of Local 118 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and guest services staff are members of Unifor 3000.

22 The Arts Club Theatre Company, one of the largest not-for-profit theatre companies in the country, is the principal gathering place for the theatrical arts in British Columbia. The organization is dedicated to the advancement of local artists telling stories from around the globe and, in particular, those of our region. From this, we believe that culture expands, an understanding of differences is nurtured, and art bursts forth. The Arts Club was founded in 1964 and is currently led by Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran and Executive Director Peter Cathie White.
