Abstract Water Quality in Estuarine Impoundments Julian Paul Wright The impounding of estuaries is currently a popular approach to urban regeneration in the UK, with barrages constructed (Tees, Wansbeck, Tawe, Cardiff Bay, Lagan and Clyde) or proposed (Usk, Loughor, Neath, Hayle, Avonmouth and Ipswich) nationwide. Impounding fundamentally alters the dynamics of estuaries with consequences in terms of sedimentation patterns and rates, ecology, flooding, groundwater, etc. This thesis presents the findings from research into the effects of impounding on estuarine water quality. A series of surveys of a range of physical and chemical parameters were carried out within four estuaries representing the complete range of tidal modification by barrage construction. Internal versus external controls on water quality are distinguished. General water quality in estuarine impoundments is good, but significant problems occur where water bodies show entrenched density stratification, with anoxia and associated increases in ammonia and metal concentrations developing. Stratification related problems are worse in partial than total tidal exclusion impoundments (although a higher rate of tidal overtopping shortens the isolation periods of deep anoxic waters), and low water quality at depth is observed over the majority of the year. The potential for eutrophication is increased by barrage construction, although phosphorus (generally the limiting nutrient) is shown to be catchment sourced, with internal cycling from sediment insignificant. Sediment thickness is shown not to be a control on water quality, although sediment build-up over time eventually leads to a loss of amenity value. Sterol fingerprints are used to identify sewage inputs to the impoundments. Advice for barrage planners and designers is given, including the exclusion and removal of saline water, provision of destratification/aeration devices, control of nutrient inputs, and modelling of sediment loads and deposition. This study has shown that catchment management is fundamental in the sustainability of estuarine impoundments. As you will read in these pages, this is a benefice of two parishes comprising the market town of Yarm and a group of nearby villages. This relatively new grouping was formed under the leadership of the previous Rector, Canon John Ford, who was also Area Dean and who retired in 2020. The communities are conscious of their very long history — Yarm is an ancient fording place over the River Tees, and the villages have been the source of a wealth of Saxon and Anglo-Danish archaeology — but they are not in any sense locked into the past. Retail and education are key to their economy and culture; rural industry still has a significant part to play, and there is extensive new house-building and an increasing population. The new Rector will find a secure foundation to build on, willing and able lay leaders, and a shared commitment to worship well planned and led in a generally liberal Catholic style. Although there is mention in this profile of concern that congregations are ageing, in fact there is more involvement with families and younger people, and with external institutions, than would be found in many other places.

    Historical Journey along the River Tees and its Tributaries Synopsis The document describes a virtual journey along the River Tees beginning at its source; the perspective is as much historical as descriptive of the current scene. Where significant tributaries join the river, they also are tracked back to their start-points. Particular attention is paid to bridges and watermills because of their intimate associations with the rivers, but nearby buildings, both religious and secular are also given attention. Some people have been specially important to developments associated with the river, and brief biographical notes are provided for them.     Stockton Trails Point of interests’ information 1. Aislaby It is thought that Aislaby is a Viking place name meaning Aislac's village. In the 1700s a small quay was constructed at Low Worsall, a further mile upstream of Aislaby. Here lead quarried up in Swaledale and other goods from North Yorkshire were loaded onto small boats to be transported down the river. Long before the age of steam, sailing on this narrow section of the Tees required the tides and wind to be just right. To overcome this problem boats were often hauled by horses walking along the riverbank, causing disputes between the local farmers and boat owners. 2. Yarm Viaduct Half a mile long and standing some 22m above the river, the viaduct dominates the town. It was built by the Leeds Northern Railway between 1849 and 1851 at a cost of £44,500. The viaduct has 43 arches and, to save you counting, it’s constructed with around seven million bricks. In 1895 the River Tees at Yarm became so frozen that boats were trapped within the ice, and it was possible, although dangerous, to walk across from one side of the river to the other, and the river became a skating rink for young and old (photo attached). 3. Yarm Bridge Originally built on the orders of Bishop Skirlaw of Durham around 1400, the bridge has been altered many times over the centuries. It started life as a narrow pack horse bridge with tolls to be paid when crossing. River Tees Rediscovered 2017 1 During the English Civil War Egglescliffe was heavily involved in guarding the bridge on behalf of the Royalists, while Parliamentarian forces occupied Yarm.

A total of 278 comments have been received and a summary is set out within the consultation section of this report. The objections raised relate primarily to traffic impact on Egglescliffe village; the impact on Tees Heritage Park; risk of anti-social behaviour; impact on residential amenity and other matters. The main planning considerations of this application are the compliance of the proposal with national and local planning policy, the impacts upon the character and appearance of the area, impact on the conservation area, highway safety, flood risk, ecology, archaeology and nature conservation and other material planning considerations. The application site is located within an area identified as part of the Tees Heritage Park. Core Strategy policy CS10 seeks to maintain the separation between settlements, along with the quality of the urban environment through the protection and enhancement of the openness of Green Wedges within the conurbation. The application site also lies adjacent to and within the Yarm and Egglescliffe Conservation Areas. The Council’s Landscape Architect has considered the proposal and concluded that the bridge would introduce a new permanent built element on to the edge of a rural landscape. However, it is considered that the bridge design has been carefully considered to minimise its impact on local character and visual amenity.

In accordance with the relevant regulations, the SPD has been subject to public consultation and this consultation Statement sets out how this was undertaken, the comments that were received and how these have been incorporated into the document as appropriate. Consultation Period 3. Consultation on the Shop Front Design and Advertisements SPD was undertaken from 30 July to 24 September 2012 alongside the consultation on Council’s ‘Preferred Options’ draft of the Regeneration and Environment Local Development Document (LDD) 4. The SPD was prepared and consulted on in accordance with regulations 16, 17 and 18 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations (2004), as amended by the Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) (Amendment) Regulations (2008). In accordance with Regulation 17, the following steps were undertaken: • Copies of the SPD and a statement setting out how comments could be made (the ‘SPD matters‘) were made available during normal office hours at the Council’s Planning Office at: Gloucester House 72 Church Road Stockton on Tees TS18 1TW • Copies of the SPD and the Statement of SPD matters were also made available at all libraries within the Borough.
