Through April 7 Macy's Flower Show 2019 “Journey to Paradisios II Operation: Inspiration” Macy's annual Flower Show, which has been running for over 60 years, provdies a showcase for the world’s diverse plant life and the work of the nation’s most renowned floral designers. Speaker: Julie Dobrow, author of After Emily: Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America's Greatest Poet tells the story of the two Victorian women most responsible for Emily Dickinson's initial posthumous publication, Mabel Loomis Todd and her daughter, Millicent Todd Bingham. After Dickinson's death, Loomis Todd's connection to the Dickenson family led her to the enormous trove of poems Emily left behind. So began the herculean task of transcribing, editing, and promoting Dickinson's work. As the popularity of the poems grew, legal issues arose between the Dickinson and Todd families, dredging up their scandals, the ownership of Dickinson's poetry, and the right to define the so-called "Belle of Amherst." Historian Tom Miller will speak about the architectural and social history of Murray Hill, with a focus on some of our neighborhood's most famous residents of years past. Millionaires, admirals and ne'er do-wells are all part of the history of our fascinating neighborhood. The talk will focus on just one block--East 36th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues--which was home to an extraordinary number of prominent military, political and business figures. Tom is an amazing story-teller who brings these characters and the great styles of their times back to life. About the speaker: Originally from Dayton Ohio, Tom Miller is a long-time NYC resident. He writes a daily blog (daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com) that chronicles the history of 's buildings and neighborhoods. Older Adult Job Fair and April 25 and 26 Employment Older Adult Employment Strategies and Job Strategies Fair State Senator Liz Krueger will be holding two events aimed at providing resources for older adults who are seeking employment. Because of space limitations, these events are limited to constituents of her Senate district. On Thursday, April 25th from 10am to 1pm they will be offering a session on Job Search Strategies and Support with the assistance of the New York Public Library Science Industry and Business Library. The session will offer job coaching, resume development, a LinkedIn workshop and photo shoot.
