Issue 128 JANUARY 11TH, 2021 Things change with time, as my very close friend likes to say. Here’s my New Year’s wish: that things change for the better in 2021. A new year brings new possibilities. We’re saddened by the loss of Gerry Marsden (78) of British Invasion legends Gerry and the Pacemakers. Their first single, “How Do You Do It,” hit number one on the British charts in 1963 – before the Beatles ever accomplished that feat – and they went on to have other smash records like “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying,” You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “I Like It” and “Ferry Cross the Mersey.” These songs are woven not just into the fabric of the 1960s, but our lives. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson covers the career of John Legend and rediscovers 17th century composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Larry Schenbeck gets soul and takes on “what if?” Ken Sander goes Stateside with The Stranglers. J.I. Agnew locks in his lockdown music system. Tom Gibbs looks at new releases from Kraftwerk, Julia Stone and Max Richter. Adrian Wu continues his series on testing in audio. John Seetoo mines a mind-boggling mic collection. NEWS RELEASE Contact: Ann Braithwaite (781) 259-9600 [email protected] Jazz at Princeton University inaugurates world’s newest jazz festival with headliner Dave Holland on Saturday, April 13 The first Princeton University Jazz Festival also features jazz superstars Donny McCaslin, Joel Frahm, Tia Fuller, Ingrid Jensen, Charenée Wade, Pedrito Martinez Jazz at Princeton University, helmed by acclaimed saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa, presents the first Princeton University Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 13. The world’s newest jazz festival highlights a lineup featuring the bands of today’s top jazz stars as well as jazz greats playing with Princeton’s exceptional student groups. Free daytime performances, to be held outdoors at Alexander Beach in front of Princeton’s Richardson Auditorium, begin at noon. At 8 p.m., bassist Dave Holland will perform with Small Group I in a ticketed event at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall, 68 Nassau Street. Tickets are $15, $5 students. When Grammy-nominated Mack Avenue recording artist, composer, and bandleader Tia Fuller picks up her saxophone, something amazing happens. Blending technical brilliance, melodic creativity, and the performing precision drawn from both her academic and stage experience, Fuller is a force to be reckoned with in the worlds of jazz, pop, R&B, and more. Currently, Fuller balances the worlds of performance and education, fulfilling a demanding schedule as both a busy touring and recording artist and a full-time professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Fuller’s resume makes her uniquely qualified for these roles. The Denver, Colorado native graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, and summa cum laude with a Master’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Already established as a leading jazz musician, Fuller was selected to be a member of the all-female band touring with Grammy-winning pop star Beyoncé. Performing as part of the I AM … Sasha Fierce and Beyoncé Experience World Tour on stages across the globe, Fuller also became a featured soloist on the Beyoncé Experience DVD (Me, Myself and I), I AM Yours I DVD (Wynn Theatre) and also appeared on number of major television shows, including Today Show, Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, BET Awards, American Music Awards, Grammy Awards and as a featured soloist with Beyoncé for President Obama at the White House. An accomplished solo artist in her own right, Fuller has recorded five full-length projects with her quartet. -

Through this pioneering approach, simultaneously honoring music’s greatest figures while championing jazz’s up-to-the-minute directions, the Collective embodies SFJAZZ’ commitment to jazz as a living, ever-relevant art form. This year the Collective celebrates the 50th anniversary of two of the essential albums in popular music, Sly and Family Stone’s Stand! and Miles Davis’ In a Silent Way, featuring guest vocalist Martin Luther McCoy and guitarist Adam Rogers — the first time the band has collaborated with a vocalist and a guitarist. Released respectively in May and July 1969 by a pair of artists connected by mutual respect, inspiration and a commitment to artistic exploration, Stand! and In a Silent Way were beacons of hope and new musical possibilities during a turbulent time in American history. Sly’s classics “I Want to Take You Higher,” “Everyday People” and “Sing a Simple Song” have become timeless expressions of joy and positivity, while Davis’ evocative work on In a Silent Way pushed jazz into bold new directions influenced by pop, R&B and funk. -

PLEASE NOTE DATES IN THIS TICKET BROCHURE ARE NO LONGER ACCURATE We were just days away from going to the printer with our ticket brochure and opening ticket sales when COVID-19 interrupted our lives and plans. Many of us put in countless hours to bring this ticket brochure together. We want to share what we created with you so you can learn about the musicians that were coming. As you have heard, musicians have had all their work canceled for many months to come. To learn more about their music, please visit their sites and consider buying what you like. If you purchase CDs and Vinyl, musicians will earn much more in royalties than they do from streams. Music streaming sites pay only .0006 of a penny per tune, or just about nothing. We hope you enjoy the writing and learning about what we were so close to presenting. At this time, we are hopeful we can have concerts soon, including a smaller festival later in the year.
