LUXEMBOURG RESISTANCE TO THE GERMAN OCCUPATION OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1940-1945 by Maureen Hubbart A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: History West Texas A&M University Canyon, TX December 2015 ABSTRACT The history of Luxembourg’s resistance against the German occupation of World War II has rarely been addressed in English-language scholarship. Perhaps because of the country’s small size, it is often overlooked in accounts of Western European History. However, Luxembourgers experienced the German occupation in a unique manner, in large part because the Germans considered Luxembourgers to be ethnically and culturally German. The Germans sought to completely Germanize and Nazify the Luxembourg population, giving Luxembourgers many opportunities to resist their oppressors. A study of French, German, and Luxembourgian sources about this topic reveals a people that resisted in active and passive, private and public ways. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Clark for her guidance in helping me write my thesis and for sharing my passion about the topic of underground resistance. I declare that my thesis consists of 87,402 words. 2 Abstract Following the Fall of France in 1940, the nation’s industry was fundamentally reorganised under the Vichy regime. This thesis traces the history of the keystones of this New Industrial Order, the Organisation Committees, by focusing on the organisation of the French steel industry between the end of the Third Republic in 1940 and the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1946. It challenges traditional views by showing that the Committees were created largely to facilitate economic collaboration with Nazi Germany. -

National History Day is a non-profit organization which promotes history education for secondary and elementary education students. The program has grown into a national program since its humble beginnings in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. Today over half a million students participate in National History Day each year, encouraged by thousands of dedicated teachers. Students select a historical topic related to a theme chosen each year. They conduct primary and secondary research on their chosen topic through libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and interviews. Students analyze and interpret their sources before presenting their work in original papers, exhibits, documentaries, websites, or performances. Students enter their projects in contests held each spring at the local, state, and national level where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest, held on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park each June. -

Thoughts on World War II in July 1944 Remarks by Carole Brookins 1 September 4, 2014 In following President Zedillo’s profound remarks, I know that if he were leading us, we would all be in very safe hands. But I’d like to look back for a moment, because I am a passionate historian, as Larry knows. I hauled him and a lot of friends from around the world over to Normandy for several days last year to visit the D Day landing beaches and honor that legacy. This week we're all here to honor the legacy of delegates from 44 nations, the founders who came to Bretton Woods on July 1, 1944 with a vision and a great purpose: to structure an international monetary system. They did this with both foresight and commitment amidst a global war where uncertainty reigned and the victory of those united nations was still a hope and hardly a reality. Just think about it. Half of them came from countries which were in war zones or at risk. Many of their families were at risk—family in military service or living in occupied countries and not knowing if they would be able to return home; and many were not able to return. Perhaps General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of the Atlantic front, while not speaking directly of Bretton Woods at the time, best described the purpose of those delegates. I'll quote him: "Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose." July 1944, was a very critical turning point in World War II, with major gains by the Allied Forces on both the Atlantic and Pacific fronts. -

Panzer-Armeeoberkommando 2 (Second Panzer Army) 43 The predecessor of the Second Panzer Army, the XIX Motorized Corps (XIX. Armeekorps /mot./), was formed in May 1939, and took part as such in the Polish campaign. It fought in the West as Panzer Group Guderian (Panzergruppe Guderian), and in early May 1941, it was de- signated Panzer Group 2 (Panzergruppe 2). It fought as Panzer Group 2 in the early stages of the campaign on the eastern front. From July 28 to August 3, 194-1, it was known as Army Group Guderian (Armeegruppe Guderian), On October 5, 1941, it became the Second Panzer Army (Panzer-AOK 2). It continued to operate on the central sector of the eastern front until the middle of August 1943, when it was transferred to the Balkans for anti- guerilla operations. It was engaged in the Brod area in eastern Croatia in December 1944, and subsequently against the Soviets in southern Hungary. Commanders of the Army from May 1941 until its disbandment in May 1945 were Generals Heinz Guderian, Rudolf Schmidt, Walter Model, Lothar Rendulic, Franz Bbhme, and Maximilian de Angelis. The Most Decorated American Soldier of World War II: Audie Murphy, World War II, and Courage Handout A: Narrative BACKGROUND Audie Murphy was born and raised in rural Texas, where his parents were poor itinerant farmers who struggled to put food on the table. He generally lived in shacks without electricity or running water. His family was poor in 1925 when he was born, but the Great Depression caused cotton prices to plummet. This made finding work even more difficult for his father, who increasingly turned to alcohol and eventually abandoned his wife and children when Audie was fifteen. Murphy did not attend school until he was nine and left to go to work at thirteen. He became a crack shot with a rifle and often hunted to help feed his family. Murphy later admitted that he was angry with his father because “I hate anyone who quits.” Murphy admired courage as a young man and wanted his father to battle even against great odds. Murphy bounced around low-paying jobs during the Great Depression, trying to learn a skill and send some money home to his mother and siblings. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the thin young man tried to join the U.S. Marine Corps, but was rejected for his diminutive size. After several attempts, he was finally accepted into the U.S. Army and found his purpose. Murphy enjoyed the order and stability of army life in basic and advanced infantry training at various military bases. He easily earned his marksmanship badge because of his expert skill with a rifle. -

Abstract This white paper is focused on the effects of pro-Russian disinformation during Operation Dragoon Ride 2015 (ODR ’15) and assesses counter-disinformation strategies for NATO convoys. ODR ‘15 was a combined US Army and NATO convoy from the Baltics through Poland and Czech Republic, largely in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. According to media reports, several significant opposition protests against the exercise were being organized in the Czech Republic. Partially because of amplified negativity regarding the convoy in social and mainstream media, the Czech populous overwhelmingly supported the convoy and very few protesters were visible. This white paper also explores subsequent Atlantic Resolve/Saber Strike operations with respect to trends in pro-Russian disinformation attempts and US/NATO-countering strategies. -

Today is checking and double checking all the things we have gone over a million times, but do it once more. Food for three days, entrenching tool, toilet paper (who knows if we can find satisfactory leaves!?) canteen full, change of clothing, especially socks. Yesterday full dress of exactly what we will wear tomorrow, marched to Motor Pool where three mechanics were having their fun spraying us with black, brown and green paint...made sure we had plenty of Vaseline covering our face and hands, and double socks over our precious paratroop boots (can't get paint on them!!!_) and we had our camouflage complete. Spent the rest of the day writing letters to girlfriends and family...if we put our invasion data in there, it won't make any difference, as the mail won't go out for a few days. -
