NABC Division II Poll (Jan. 26, 2020) #MBBNotes 1. Northwest Missouri State (16) 2. Lincoln Memorial • The Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team is back at home for the second-straight weekend hosting 3. West texas A & M Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night and the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday. Although they didn’t earn 4. UC San Diego a sweep this past weekend, the Golden Eagles got a giant win on Friday night against UMary, building a 37-25 lead 5. Indiana (PA) 6. Nova Southeastern and holding on at the end. Minnesota Crookston fell on Saturday night to Minot State, which means that the Golden 7. Florida Southern Eagles are now in a three-way tie for fifth in the NSIC North, along with Bemidji State and UMary. The games will 8. Bellarmine keep on getting bigger as we get into February. 9. Azusa Pacific 10. St. Edwards 11. Ferris State • CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. Senior foward Malcolm Cohen has had struggles this season shooting the basket- 12. Jefferson ball, but on Friday night, Cohen reversed the trend and shot lights out. Cohen scored eight out of the first 10 Golden 13. Missouri Southern Eagle points, including two of his career-high eight 3-point makes in the first two minutes. Cohen had seven 3-point 14. Bridgeport makes in the first half, including a stretch where her buried five in a matter of seven minutes. The final 3-point make 15. Missouri-St. Louis 16. Alabam Hunstville of the half for Cohen brought the Golden Eagle lead to 17 and Lysaker Gymnasium into a frenzy. It was a great atmo- 17. St. Thomas Aquinas sphere on Friday night inside of Lysaker Gymnasium and Cohen’s hot shooting was a big reason why. 18. Chico State 19. Dixie State • KEEP ON SHINING. Head Coach Dan Weisse is excited about all three freshman on the roster, but guard Tyrese 20. Grand Valley State 21. Walsh Shines might be shining brightest of them all (pun intended). The freshman from La Grange, Ill., has scored more 22. Indianapolis than 10 points in four of the Golden Eagles six games and has raised his average by almost four points in the 23. Point Loma previous five games. After the Northern State game on Jan. 10, Shines sat at 3.8 points per game. After the Minot 24. Shippensburg State game last Saturday, Shines is averaging 6.6 points per game and 2.4 rebounds. The lefty is coming into his own 25. Valdosta State and Golden Eagle fans are seeing glimpses of the future after Shines started his first two games of his Golden Eagle Bold - NSIC School career last weekend. D2SIDA Division II Poll • DON’T PUT US ON THE LINE. Minnesota Crookston is helped by the fact that they have one of the best free throw (Jan. 28, 2020) shooters in the country, but as a team, Minnesota Crookston is the only team in the NSIC to shoot more than 80 per- cent from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles shoot 81.1 percent from the free throw line, helped by Cleary’s 91.8 1.Northwest Missouri State (12) percent from the stripe, missing just 14 out of 171 attempts. Malcolm Cohen is 79.2 percent from the field, while 2. Lincoln Memorial (1) 3. UC San Diego (1) Brian Sitzmann has missed just four out of 34 attempts, good for 88.2 percent. The Golden Eagles are second in the 4. Indiana (PA) (1) nation in free throw percentage, trailing Cedarville (OH). Free throw shooting is an important part of a basketball 5. West Texas A & M (1) game and it’s a part Minnesota Crookston excels at. 6. Bellarmine 7. Nova Southeastern 8. Florida Southern • FOLLOW THE PLAN. Minnesota Crookston made a statement the last time they played the University of Sioux 9. Ferris State Falls. The Golden Eagles made 11 3-point field goals and were led by three double-figure scorers, including Harrison 10. St. Edwards Cleary’s 40 and Brian Sitzmann’s 20. Defensively, Minnesota Crookston held the Cougars to just 40 percent shooting 11. Missouri Southern State from the field. It was the Golden Eagles biggest win of the season in terms of quality of win, and the Golden Eagles 12. Azusa Pacific 13. Bridgeport will hope for much of the same this weekend, this time inside of Lysaker Gymnasium. 14. Missouri-St. Louis 15. Jefferson • BETTER FINISH. In Friday night’s win over the Marauders of UMary, the Golden Eagles arguably played their 16. Shippensburg best half of the season, holding the Marauders to just 34.5 percent shooting from the field, including just 1-6 from 17. Queens (N.C.) 18. Dixie State behind the arc. On the flip-side of things, Minnesota Crookston shot 43.5 percent from the field, including 8-18 from 19. Valdosta State the 3-point line, with the help from Cohen’s career-high seven 3-point makes. In the second half, the Marauders 20. St. Thomas Aquinas missed just 12 shots, compared to the Golden Eagles missing 24 shots on the offensive end. The big difference was 21. Point Loma Minnesota Crookston making six 3-point field goals in the second half, compared to just one for UMary. The Maraud- 22. Walsh 23. Minnesota Duluth ers shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half, which cut a once 18-point Golden Eagle lead to just two at 24. Grand Valley State one point. The big emphasis for Minnesota Crookston will continue to be to play a full 40 minutes. 25. Alabama Hunstville Bold - NSIC School • HISTORY IN THE MAKING. In the past 3 1/2 seasons, Harrison Cleary has given Golden Eagle fans many things to cheer for and at times, as made fans jaws drop. This weekend, Cleary could make some more history and even more jaws drop. With 46 points in two games last weekend, including 27 against Minot State, Cleary is now just 29 NSIC Standings points away from becoming the all-time conference leader in points scored in conference games. The senior set the (Jan. 13, 2020) scoring record for college basketball players in the state of Minnesota as well last Friday night. It is also a longshot, North Division Over. Minnesota Duluth 11-3 16-4 but Cleary has an outside shot of becoming the first Golden Eagle ever to reach 3,000 points. In every season at Northern State 11-3 15-5 Crookston, H has had at least one game with 40 or more points, including this season where he has three, including MSUM 8-6 12-8 that record-setting 52-point output in the win over Wayne State College on December 14. SCSU 7-7 9-9 UMary 5-9 10-10 Minnesota Crookston 5-9 9-11 • NICE TO SEE YOU, IBU. Ibu Jassey Demba is starting to fit right in at Crookston. The junior college transfer from Bemidji State 5-9 8-10 Monroe College and native of Birmingham, England is starting to find his niche and is playing a huge role for the Minot State 3-11 9-11 Golden Eagles. On Friday night, with the Golden Eagles short-handed, Jassey Demba collected his first career double-double in the win over the Marauders, with 11 points and 11 rebounds, on 3-5 shooting from the field and South Division Over. Sioux Falls 11-3 15-5 3-4 from the 3-point line. Jassey Demba also pulled down a career-high 11 boards, which was important with the Upper Iowa 10-4 13-7 Golden Eagles lead rebounder, Javier Nicolau out during the weekend. Minnesota State 9-5 11-9 Winona State 8-6 11-9 • BACK-TO-BACK. Last weekend, the Golden Eagles split at home with a nice win over UMary and then struggled Augustana 7-7 12-8 Wayne State 5-9 8-15 from the field in a loss to Minot State. This weekend, the Golden Eagles are back at home for their penultimate CSP 4-10 6-12 home weekend of the season. Much like every weekend in NSIC play, it doesn’t get easier for Minnesota Crookston, SMSU 3-11 6-14 who plays Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night and the NSIC South leaders, Sioux Falls on Saturday. “Look Good, Play Good” White Jersey: 5-5 Black Jersey: 4-6 Minnesota Crookston Men’s Basketball Games 21 & 22

Dan Weisse enters his sixth season as the head coach for the men’s basketball program at Minnesota Crookston. During his five previous seasons, Weisse has Dan Weisse built Minnesota Crookston into a contender in one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II conferences. The Golden Eagles are coming off a historic season as the Golden Eagles set the school-record for wins in a season (17) and conference wins (9). Weisse Head MBB Coach helped Minnesota Crookston to their first-ever NSIC Tournament wins as they took down 2016 NCAA Division II National Champion Augustana University on the road. The victory made shockwaves across the nation as they took down a strong Viking program and catapulted Minnesota Crookston to their first-ever NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament appearance at the Sanford Pentagon. Minnesota Crookston also had great success on their home floor at Lysaker Gymnasi- um with a 13-2 mark, including having over 1,100 fans on senior night. The Seniors were Weisse’s first recruiting class at UMC. In his first season with the Golden Eagles, he moved the program in the right direction as they went 7-20 and picked up their most conference victories (5) since the 2000-01 season. He helped the Golden Eagles to wins over NSIC opponents St. Cloud State University, Wayne State College (Neb.), Bemidji State University, University of Mary and University of Sioux Falls. Seven seniors led the Golden Eagles and they all earned their Minnesota degree. One of Weisse’s biggest contributions in year one was improving the team defense. The Golden Eagles would allow 70.4 points per game in Weisse’s first season, down from 79.9 points per game during the 2013-14 season. In Coach Weisse’s second season the rebuilding process officially began as his first full recruiting class was set to begin their collegiate careers. The team featured only one senior, three juniors, two sophomores, and eight freshmen on the roster. Weisse stresses recruiting not just talent, but the importance of recruiting the right talent, and having high character people to build a program. In his third season, the team was youth driven led by seven sophomores and six freshman with just three upperclassmen coming into the season. The Golden Eagles saw continued progress as they more than doubled their win total from the previous season with eight, finishing with four conference wins. Minnesota Crookston fell just short of the NSIC/Sanford Health quarterfinals after losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer in the first round to Upper Iowa University. The season was marked by a record-breaking year by freshman Harrison Cleary. Cleary would set school marks for points in a season, field goals in a season and free throws in a season. In addition, he set the school record with 42 points in a game against Minnesota State. All of his records surpassed U of M Crookston great Joe Hasz, who remains as a top five scorer in NSIC history. Cleary would be named NSIC Freshman of the Year, the first player in school history to earn that accolade and the first person since the 2006-07 season to earn a conference specialty award. Cleary also earned All-NSIC Second Team honors, becoming the first Minnesota Crookston player since the 2003-04 season to earn all-conference recognition. Weisse would also help Cleary to a pair of national awards as he was named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team and was selected as Hero Sports Division II Newcomer of the Year. In Weisse’s fourth season, the Golden Eagles set a program record for wins with a 10-19 mark. Minnesota Crookston was guided by Cleary, who was an All- NSIC First Team selection, the first for the program since Joe Hasz in 2002-03. Cleary also went on to become the program’s first All-Region and All-America pick since Hasz. Cleary was the statistical champion for free throw percentage for NCAA Division II. In addition, Gable Smith led NCAA Division II in blocked shots for the regular-season and became the program’s first-ever NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. Weisse Resume The Golden Eagles also had success in the classroom as their team GPA continues to rise. In addition, sophomore Aaron Hollcraft was selected following the 2014 - Present- Head Coach 2016-17 season as the U of M Crookston Student-Athlete of the Year for his performance on and off of the court. Cleary was also voted as the U of M Crook- ston Outstanding Athlete of the Year in back-to-back seasons. The Golden Eagles also earned the ABCA Academic Excellence Award. In addition, Minnesota Minnesota Crookston Crookston had five players named to the ABCA Honors Court. The Golden Eagles were one of just 59 teams across all divisions to have five or more players 2011-14 - Assistant Coach named to the Honors Court. MSU Moorhead In addition to the highlights of the 2018-19 campaign, Harrison Cleary earned his second All-NSIC First Team nod, and a D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team pick. Cleary was the NCAA Division II statistical champion for free throw shooting for the second-straight season. He also helped Cleary be selected to 2007-11 - Director of Operations the NABC All-Central Region Second Team and a nod as the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Player of the Year. Cleary surpassed Golden Eagle great Joe Hasz, as the all-time leading scorer in program history. In addition, he moved to No. 3 all-time in NSIC history in scoring, and became North Dakota State the first player in program history to surpass 2,000 points. 2005-07 - Graduate Assistant In the classroom, the Golden Eagles had seven student-athletes named to the NSIC All-Academic team with Chase Knickerbocker, Aaron Hollcraft, Chase John- son, Harrison Cleary, Darin Viken, and Gable Smith earning accolades. He helped Chase Knickerbocker to his second-straight NSIC Honor Student-Athlete nod, Middle Tennessee State along with his second-straight UMC Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection.
