Simmons Shoots His Way Into Record Books PAGE 16 / THE RETRIEVER FEBRUARY 20, 1990 The Retriever Simmons shoots his way into record books by David Foul stafl writer Four years ago. a struggling UMBC basketball team recruited a 6T' freshman from Indiana named Larry Simmons. His natural talent and total team play has put him into the record books. The "Simmons Watch." as it was termed, was ended Saturday night as he scored 15 points to pass Rick Moreland's career mark of 1,728 total points. He is also one point shy of becoming the third Retriever to score 500 points in a season. Team-note: Derell Thompson, along with Simmons, came off the bench to lead the team to a 88-67 victory over the St. Mary Seahawks. UMBC jumped out to a 16-2 lead within the first 4 I 2 minutes of the game. The first 12 points were all from three pointers, two of which came from Simmons. With ten minutes of play expired, the Retrievers had extended their lead to 21. Junior Derek Reid ended the half with a. bank shot to put the team up 48-28. Reid. Franklin, and Simmons all started the second half in double figures. Senior Keith Warren of the Seahawks popped a three pointer in the opening seconds of the second half to try and light a fire under his team, but Simmons played the fireman and hit one of his own at the other end of the court. The Retrievers had a combined effort of 17 steals and 6 blocked shots. Derell Thompson had the Team High Score for the second time this season with 20 points. Freshman Melvin Swenn. who averages 1.9 points a game, rallied from the bench to score ten points with lour rebounds and 1 steal. St. Mary's only shining star was guard Jason Slaughter who finished with 17 points. Coach Earl Hawkins commented briefly on Simmons. "He's not only a scorer, but he is also a team leader. He doesn't look for the points, they just come. He plays within the system, which helps the team as a whole." In Simmons' final year, he is leading his team in field goals, three pointers, free throws, total points, steals and minutes played. UMBC will not soon forget his impressive performance. When approached after the game. Simmons had a few modest remarks. "LVe been here for four years and I've never thought of breaking the record. 1 was a little nervous after the first eight points, but 1 settled down and played my game. Credit for the victory must be given to the entire team. Bobby Mills has a team high assist mark of 122. and Levi Franklin and Derrick Reid both have 40." This has been a mediocre season for the Retrievers (11- 13). but with four games remaining they still could finish with a winning record. As for Simmons, he will be thoroughly missed next year, but his number will hang Fan \ Simmons shoots to become the highest record scorer. photo by Gregg Landry from the ceiling of the Fieldhouse in honor of his great (Inset) Rick Moreland congratulates Simmons on breaking his old record. career as a Retriever. Sondheim's 'Marry Me a Little' Returning to New York - NYTimes.com AUGUST 2, 2012, 3:09 PM Sondheim’s ‘Marry Me a Little’ Returning to New York By LARRY ROHTER "Marry Me a Little," a Stephen Sondheim musical that hasn't been performed in New York in 25 years, will begin the Keen Company's 2012-2013 season next month. The Off Broadway production, with previews beginning at the Clurman Theater Sept. 11 and an opening night set for Oct. 2, includes songs that, producers say, have never been performed on a New York stage before, most notably "Rainbows," from an as yet unmade film version of "Into the Woods." Last staged in New York in 1987 in a brief revival by the York Theater Company and seen more recently in regional theaters, "Marry Me a Little" is the story of two lonely people yearning for love, who happen to be residents of the same Brooklyn apartment building and unaware of each other. Conceived by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, it is a revue without dialogue and draws on songs that were cut from other Sondheim works, among them "Follies," "Company" and "A Little Night Music." "Marry Me a Little" will be directed by Keen's artistic director, Jonathan Silverstein, who will also be overseeing the second production in the company's season, a revival of A.R. Gurney's drama "The Old Boy," from 1991. That production is scheduled to begin performances in February 2013. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/sondheims-marry-me-a-little-returning-to-new-york/?pagewanted=print[8/3/2012 9:46:06 AM] Hoffman to Direct in Coming LAByrinth Theater Season - NYTimes.com AUGUST 1, 2012, 4:29 PM Hoffman to Direct in Coming LAByrinth Theater Season By LARRY ROHTER The return of the Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman to the director's chair is one of the highlights of the 2012-2013 season of the LAByrinth Theater Company, announced Wednesday.
