I am often asked, what is “grace”? My best and simplest answer is, when you see the word “grace”, replace it with the words “unconditional love for us”. For this is what grace is - God’s unconditional love for us that is bestowed on us through the seven Sacraments of the church and the various sacramentals in our lives. (Sacramentals are reminders of God’s presence: holy water, a rosary, religious jewelry, bibles, prayer books, anything associated with faith, blessed or not). As a priest, celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation is humbling. It’s humbling in the sense that we “sit in the place of Christ.” When people enter the confessional they often say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned.” They are not talking to me, but they are speaking to our Heavenly Father. After they confess their sins and there is a conversation, the priest uses the words, “through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace. You are absolved of all your sins in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” It is not the words of the priest, but the words of God that set you free. I hear a lot of reasons why people choose not to go to reconciliation. I probably used one or two of them when I was young as well. But now being on this side of the sacrament, I can give you even more reasons why people choose to use the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Some examples: They verbalize their sins for the first time (they hear their voice say them) Rather than think and fester over the same thing, they are set free Rather than just praying for forgiveness, you actually hear the words, “You are forgiven of your sins, go forth and sin no more!” It is about trust, belief, faith, understanding, hope, resurrection. Due to the coronavirus and directives from the archdiocese of Dubuque, our communal reconciliation services for Lent have been cancelled. If you would like to schedule an individual reconciliation, please contact Fr. Ken. If it has been a while, do not fear. Simply tell the priest it has been a while and the priest will help you out. Afraid of what to say? The words are not important; your desire to be forgiven and your desire to be set free is the gift. What about the penance? Often this is easy, when compared to the guilt, fear and anxiety we carry with us. As Jesus often says, “Has no one condemned you? Neither do I. Go forth and sin no more! Peace, Fr. Kenneth J. Glaser P.S.: Some of you may know that I was planning to take my sister and her family to Rome, Italy, to visit my nephew in the seminary. Due to the Coronavirus, this trip was postponed at this time. I still hope to make the trip in the future. Let us pray for all who are afflicted, not only by this virus, but also for those suffering with the flu. May they experience God’s healing presence. I still hope to take a few days off this week for some rest and relaxation. Evenings and weekends by appointment 4 | Welcome to St. Ludmila Church Message from Archbishop Jackels regarding the Coronavirus After consultation and considerable prayer, it has been decided – out of an abundance of caution and with devotion to the common good – to take steps aimed at slowing down the spread of the coronavirus, to flatten the curve, as they say, so as not to overburden the healthcare system. Therefore, beginning on 19 March 2020 and until further notice, the following provisions have been taken: All public celebrations of Holy Mass are canceled. All Catholics in the Archdiocese of Dubuque are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. The Chrism Mass will be celebrated, but with only the liturgical ministers present. The oils will be blessed, bottled, and distributed in some way to the parishes. During this time, the Archbishop will live stream a celebration of Holy Mass each Sunday, as well as the Chrism Mass (and the Triduum, if the situation has not changed by then), and will lead the Rosary each week on Thursday.
