NEW MENU ITEMS - Fresh out of VIOLET OON'S KITCHEN

We've been having an exciting time creating and testing new menu items at VIOLET OON'S KITCHEN - and we're all ready to add them on to our menu...... expanding it by 12 new dishes.

Being a Nyonya and with fellow Nyonya Su-Lyn and Baba Yiming, we're always excited when we think of the smoky flavour and creamy texture of the prized Buah Keluak Nut. From the classical dish of Buah Keluak Ayam, we first spread our culinary wings with Buah Keluak Tepanade, one very popular item on our menu as one half of the 2-Dip board served with fresh house made Pita Bread.

Where else can we bring this delicious nut which forms the very heart of the Peranakan culinary heritage - we hit upon the idea one night - BUAH KELUAK PASTA where the prawn and infused buah keluak nut is tossed with spaghetti to form a delicious, creamy texture and taste. To add to that ambroisiac buah keluak experience - we've crowned the pasta with creamy fragrant buah keluak quenelle - truly our jewel in our crown!

We wanted to add more of the traditional Nyonya dishes to our menu and we've experimented with them as weekly specials. Two of the most popular and asked about are our DRY and KUEH . Now diners do not have to wait for the weekly specials to taste these all time favourites.

SPICY WINGED BEAN SALAD or Kacang Botol has also proven very popular - this comprises raw slices of winged bean tossed in a sambal belacan sauce made by adding lime juice, dried prawns and sugar to the sambal. Julienne of raw shallots and dry fried grated coconut called kerisik complete this dish, which has found resonance with diners who want a taste of the old and true.

Creamy spicy CHICKEN LEMAK adds to the main course experience and SAMBAL EGGPLANT or Sambal Terong, which is fried chunks of eggplants in a spicy, hot, sweet and sour sambal sauce, gives you more vegetable choices.

Also adding to the veggie dining experience is our old school , where the sauce is made in the real traditional style - raw garlic and chillies are ground with gula melaka and tamarind juice to form a delicious lip smacking sauce and this is given yet more body by the addition of ground roasted peanuts. To the fried bean curd is added julienne of cucumber and lightly blanched bean sprouts.

To something old, we always add something new to give that special spike to the taste experience. CRISPY CHICKEN TENDERS WITH 2 DIP , house breaded and flavoured, is served with two sauces - Truffle Mayo and a House Chilli Sauce with its hint of BBQ overlaid by chilli padi and Limau Kesturi juice. And we've added that perennial favourite- HAMBURGER AND FRIES - made with tender juicy Angus beef and topped with Violet's own Sweet Onion Relish, Gruyere cheese, arugula and mushrooms. Our yummy local CHILLI CRAB PIZZA has proven a popular weekly special so we're adding it to be menu too.

Sweet endings are very special in a meal at Violet Oon's Kitchen. Our deliciously delicate KUEH BENGKAH (made by baking grated tapioca, coconut milk, eggs, sugar and butter) is now part of our regular menu and a new item is the Spanish inspired LECHE FLAN, which is a super rich version of cream caramel.
