Event Details
The overall flood situation in Bangladesh deteriorated during the past 24 hours till Thursday morning in greater Rangpur and adjoining areas in the Brahmaputra basin as the major rivers were flowing above their danger marks at several points. The situation sharply deteriorated following continuous rise in the water levels of the major rivers due to huge onrush of hilly waters from the upper catchments and rainfalls in the upstream during the period.
Lalmonirhat District:
Both the Teesta and Dharla rivers crossed the danger mark on Thursday, July 22, 2010. For that, Low- lying areas of 50 more villages in 14 unions under five upazilas in Lalmonirhat district have been flooded due to continuous downpour and sudden onrush of water from upstream. At least 50,000 people were marooned in Teesta and Dharla shoals and low-lying areas in Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari, Patgram and Sadar upazilas of the district. The flood-hit unions are Dahagram, Sree Rampur of Patgram upazila, Goddimari, Sindurna, Paruliya, Dawabari of Hatibandha upazila, Votmari, Kakina of Kaliganj upazila, Mohishkhocha, Durgapur of Aditmari upazila and Khuniya Gachh, Rajpur, Kulaghat and Mogholhat unions of Sadar upazila. Flood affected people are yet to get any help from the government or even from any NGO. Meanwhile, the flood-affected people have been facing crisis of food and pure drinking water. A large number of affected people have taken shelter on the embankment of Teesta and Dharla rivers and nearby highlands.
Rangpur District
Sudden flood due to the Teesta river protection embankment collapse at Gongachara upazila in Rangpur district inundated more than 100 families. The Teesta river protection embankment collapsed on Thursday, July 22, 2010.
Panchagor District
On Tuesday, July 20, 2010, the Kortowa river protection embankment breached due to torrential rain and hiil water from upstream rendering more than thousands of people water logged. The flash flood forcing the affected people to take shelter in nearby relatives houses, schools and highlands. The badly flood affected areas are Ramerdanga, Tulardanga, Nimnagar, Pourkhalpara, Notun Bosti Khalpara and so on.
