JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS AT THE LAUNCH OF THE BOOK THE PROFESSOR: THE LIFE STORY OF AZUMAH NELSON ALISA HOTEL ACCRA, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29, 2014 Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen: It is my pleasure to join Professor Azumah Nelson in launching The Professor, a book about his extraordinary life – a life perhaps unparalleled in Ghana’s rich history. Athletics, football and boxing were sporting disciplines that put Ghana on the world map during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, as Ghana participated in various tournaments from the All Africa Games to the Commonwealth through to the Olympics. While we can describe the performances of our sportsmen as commendable, it was the genius of Azumah that sent some across the globe to check the position of Ghana on the world map. Azumah put Ghana on the map long before football did through the Starlets 91 group that proudly annexed the World Under-17 Cup. The story of Azumah is truly one of a man who was never intimidated by the challenges of his humble beginnings. He saw every challenge as a reason to create an opportunity. Author Ashley Morrison does an excellent literary job of piecing together the Azumah story, the Azumah way – full of innocence, candour and emotion. The book not only showcases Azumah’s lineage and ancestry but also Ghana’s rich cultural history. It leaves nothing out in capturing the socio- political situation that persisted especially during the world title days. It was quite instructive when Azumah’s childhood friend Obi Oblitey offered a vivid description of the beauty of the blue seawater that used to be the Korle Lagoon – full of fish that swam in peaceful abandon surrounded by coconut trees that bordered the river bank.

    Hugh Vondracek JCIR: Vol. 7, No. 1 (2019) China’s Stadium Diplomacy and its Determinants: A Typological Investigation of Soft Power Hugh Vondracek* Abstract Since 1958, China has constructed over 140 sports facilities around the world. Previous research into stadium diplomacy lacks definitional clarity, has not systematically investigated the phenomenon, and crucially, has failed to explain why China employs stadium diplomacy where it does. This article defines the phenomenon and locates all known cases without temporal or geographic restrictions. We create a classification system and typology, permitting a comparison of theoretically-like types to develop and test a multi-determinant theory. We find empirical evidence that China employs stadium diplomacy to secure natural resources and to secure diplomatic recognition in line with the One-China policy. These findings have important implications for scholarship into the use of soft power within interstate rivalry, and the methodology demonstrates that a clear typology of soft power which is mutually exclusive and logically exhaustive can be created and is informative. Just the latest example of China’s stadium diplomacy, a soft-power push dating back to 1958, reaching from Antigua, to Vanuatu, to Dar es Salaam.

    GAMES HISTORY INTRODUCTION In past centuries, the British Empire’s power and influence stretched all over the world. It started at the time of Elizabeth 1 when Sir Francis Drake and other explorers started to challenge the Portuguese and Spanish domination of the world. The modern Commonwealth was formed in 1949, with ‘British’ dropped from the name and with Logo of the Commonwealth many countries becoming independent, but Games Federation choosing to remain part of the group of nations called the Commonwealth. The first recorded Games between British Empire athletes were part of the celebrations for the Coronation of His Majesty King George V in 1911. The Games were called the 'Festival of Empire' and included Athletics, Boxing, Wrestling and Swimming events. At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the friendliness between the Empire athletes revived the idea of the Festival of Empire. Canadian, Bobby Robinson, called a meeting of British Empire sports representatives, who agreed to his proposal to hold the first Games in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. From 1930 to 1950 the Games were called the British Empire Games, and until 1962 were called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. From 1966 to 1974 they became the British Commonwealth Games and from 1978 onwards they have been known as the Commonwealth Games. I spent the last three summers learning traditional dance- drumming in Ghana, West Africa. I focus primarily on two schools that I have significant recent experience with: the Dagbe Arts Centre in Kopeyia and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie. While at Dagbe, I studied the music and dance of the Anlo-Ewe ethnic group, a people who live primarily in the Volta region of South-eastern Ghana, but who also inhabit neighboring countries as far as Togo and Benin. I took classes and lessons with the staff as well as with the director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, a teacher and performer of Ewe dance-drumming. His father, Godwin Agbeli, founded the Dagbe Arts Centre in order to teach others, including foreigners, the musical styles, dances, and diverse artistic cultures of the Ewe people. The Dagara Music and Arts Center was founded by Bernard Woma, a master drummer and gyil (xylophone) player. The DMC or Dagara Music Center is situated in the town of Medie just outside of Accra. Mr. Woma hosts primarily international students at his compound, focusing on various musical styles, including his own culture, the Dagara, in addition music and dance of the Dagbamba, Ewe, and Ga ethnic groups.

Olympic gold medallists Allan Wells and Eric Liddell were the inaugural inductees to the scottishathletics Hall of Fame. Wells, the 1980 Olympic 100 metres gold medallist, was there in person to accept the award, as was Patricia Russell, the daughter of Liddell, whose triumph in the 400 metres at the 1924 Olympic Games was an inspiration behind the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire. The legendary duo were nominated by a specially-appointed panel consisting of Andy Vince, Joan Watt and Bill Walker of scottishathletics, Mark Hollinshead, Managing Director of Sunday Mail and an on-line poll conducted via the scottishathletics website. The on-line poll resulted in the following votes: 31% voting for Allan Wells, 24% for Eric Liddell and 19% for Liz McColgan. Liz was inducted into the Hall of Fame the following year, along with the Olympic gold medallist Wyndham Halswelle.

Cheney is a skillful boxer, but it‟s like watching a comedian tell old jokes. The crowd can’t wait for him to finish. “Put him away Spike,” yells one hairy gap toothed individual. “Send him back home to Argentina in a box,” yells another tattooed behemoth. A boxing crowd is not a good place to find the new age sensitive male. “Send, that bloody Argentinean, back to the Falklands” gets a few laughs from the politically incorrect crowd. But “Spike him Cheney,” gets a mass groan for the budding Grouch Marx guzzling his beer two rows back. Not all boxing spectators have violent dispositions and racist tendencies. Boxings primeval brutality and flamboyant showmanship, also attracts the rich and famous. Media magnate Kerry Packer and actor Paul Hogan are here today, along with many authentic examples James of the Aussie Male yobbo. Amongst this yobbo fraternity it is interesting to see how body building has taken the place of tattoos as the symbol of Aussie male machismo. Tatoos haven‟t disappeared. There are still plenty of snakes on arms, spider web elbows and HATE inscribed knuckles.

This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo­ graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

    August 12, 1991 Ghana Government Denies Existence of Political Prisoners Minister Says Detainees "Safer" in Custody Introduction Ghana's ruling Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), chaired by Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings, has claimed -- for the third time in as many years -- that Ghana has no political prisoners. In a radio interview on May 31, Secretary for Foreign Affairs Obed Asamoah, argued that some detainees -- whom he characterized as "subversives" -- are being kept in custody for their own good. He added that if they were brought to trial, they would be convicted and executed. The first claim is deliberately misleading. Africa Watch knows of the existence of a number of detainees incarcerated in Ghana, though it is difficult to estimate the exact number in the light of government denials. One group -- of ten detainees -- was moved to different prisons on the same day -- January 14, 1991. One member of this group is known to have been held without charge or trial since November 1982. Their detentions have never been officially explained. The minister's argument that detainees are better protected in custody amounts to a manifest presumption of guilt, and makes it unlikely that any detainee in Ghana can now receive a fair trial. The government's denial is also contradicted by the publication on May 30 of a list of 76 "political prisoners and other detainees" by the opposition Movement for Freedom and Justice (MFJ). According to the MFJ's information at the time, none of the 76 had been charged or tried. The PNDC Secretary for the Interior, Nana Akuoku Sarpong, has characterized the list as a mixture of "lies and half truths," calculated to discredit the government.
