Beeston just failed to secure their first win at Wimbledon since 2014, Chris Proctor earning a point with four minutes to play in a 3-3 draw.

Wimbledon have been members of the Premier Division since 2013-14, replacing Brooklands who had been automacally relegated in 2012-13. Wimbledon have only ever lost once in the Premier Division at Brooklands, 3-2 in February 2019. Otherwise, apart from a 2-2 draw in 2015, Wimbledon have always gone back to South West London with all three points.

Brooklands will need to regroup aer last weekend’s 8-1 thrashing by defending champions, Surbiton at a venue (Sugden Road), Brooklands have not done well at in recent seasons. Wimbledon ensured that Beeston will have to wait for at least another season for their first win at Wimbledon since 2014, with a hard fought 3-3 draw.

Opening day form would suggest that Wimbledon will be claiming the three points yet again, but Brooklands will want to show that their match at Surbiton was a blip. ------Premier Division Sequences Beeston’s last no-score draw was at home to Brooklands Manchester University on 12 March 2017 (57 games) This is also Brooklands Manchester University’s last no-score draw. Surbiton last failed to score in the Premier Division at East Grinstead on 5 October 2014 in the Premier Division (105 games) [5 seasons x 18 from 2015-16 to 2019-20=90 +1 game in 2020-21 + 14 games in 2014-15]

N.B. Surbiton failed to score in the EHL Championships semi-final on 11 April 2015 in a 2-0 defeat to Wimbledon and the 105 game record refers to regular season Premier Division games only

~ 12 ~ MATCHDAY NOTES Old Georgians v University of Durham

First Naonal League Meeng

The University of Durham have had to wait an extra week to make their first ever appearance in the Premier Division aer being allocated the first week of the season.

Durham have a bapsm of fire as they start at Old Georgians, who also made their first ever Premier Division appearance last season, but having recruited well, finished fourth at the end of the regular season and were set to face Surbiton in the Championship semi-finals.

Durham came up at the third aempt, having won the Conference North on two occasions but subsequently failing to finish in the top two of the Promoon Tournament. Aer winning the North League in 2007-08, Durham took part in the Conference North and had their first chance of promoon in 2010-11 when they won the Conference three points ahead of Sheffield Hallam.

They came so close, finishing third in a three way e with the University of Exeter and Southgate, missing out with a zero goal difference compared with Southgate’s +2 and Exeter’s +4 aer all three teams had won two of their three games.

Durham then had to wait unl 2016-17 for another chance aer winning all eighteen games to finish a massive sixteen points ahead of runners-up, Bowdon. But unfortunately they met their match in the Promoon Tournament, finishing fourth with a single point garnered in a 3-3 draw with Team Bath Buccaneers who also failed to go up.

But come 2020 and came the breakthrough as with one round of matches to play, Durham were declared champions of the newly formed Division One North, two points ahead of runners-up, Bowdon aer Bowdon’s appeal was rejected.

Old Georgians themselves have had an interesng history in the naonal league and came close to being relegated to the South League a season before they won promoon to the Premier Division.

Only founded in 1995, Old Georgians achieved their target of reaching the naonal league in 2003-04, when they won Division 2, pipping current Premier Division rivals, East Grinstead on goal difference. They played in the one season Premier 2 in 2004-05 before being relegated from the reconstuted Division One in 2005-06.

With league restructuring becoming a common occurrence, Old Georgians played in and won the Naonal South Division ahead of current Premier Division teams, Oxted and the University of Exeter in 2006-07. They spent one season back in Division One before yet another restructure saw the introducon of the Conferences as the second er. Aer a first successful season in the Conference West in 2008-09, things went wrong the following season when they finished ninth and were relegated back to the South League at the expense of Indian Gymkhana via the relegaon playoffs.

Old Georgians had to wait unl 2015-16 to finally win their place back in the naonal league and again had a successful season in the Conference West, but a switch to the Conference East in 2016-17 nearly proved disastrous as they only managed to avoid relegaon by winning the relegaon playoffs.

A year later, Old Georgians swept to the Conference East tle, won all three Promoon Tournament matches and aer one season in the Premier in 2019-20 and having bolstered their squad, are now preparing to make another challenge for the tle.

~ 15 ~ MATCHDAY NOTES Oxted v Holcombe

Last Meeng at Oxted School (Conference East – 5 October 2014) Oxted 0 Holcombe 6 (Gareth Andrew (2), Nick Catlin, , Harry Trusler, James Stedman

Holcombe are Oxted’s first visitors in the Premier Division and renew an acquaintance from when both teams were in the Conference East when it formed the second er of English Hockey.

Holcombe romped to victory at Oxted School, on their way to finishing a massive twenty points ahead of runners-up. Bromley & Beckenham and 25 points ahead of fourth placed Oxted.

However, Holcombe won 17 and drew one game in the 2014-15 season and that draw came in the return fixture with Oxted in a pulsang 5-5 draw in November 2014, Trusler and Andrew scored twice with Adam Jordan also on target for Holcombe in a game which saw Holcombe lead 4-0 aer 37 minutes. Incredibly Oxted fought back to lead 5-4, Christopher Coleman’s brace and goals from Robbert Schenk, Jonathan Janucey and Chris Porter pung Holcombe’s unbeaten record in jeopardy with eleven minutes le. Andrew popped up with the equaliser in the penulmate minute.

The teams first met in the naonal league in 2007-08 in Naonal Division South following Holcombe’s relegaon from Division One in a 2-2 draw at Holcombe in November 2007. The following February, Johannes Kloess scored all four goals as Oxted beat Holcombe at Oxted School. In 2008-09, both teams transferred to the Conference East where Oxted drew 2-2 at home and won 2-0 at Holcombe on the way to finishing first but missing out on a place in the Premier Division.

In 2009-10, Holcombe thrashed Oxted 6-0, thanks to a David Mathews hat-trick and for the third me drew 2-2 in the return at Oxted School. A season later, Oxted faded, as Holcombe completed a league double with a 3-0 win at Oxted School and a 4-1 victory at Holcombe.

2011-12 saw Oxted’s fortunes revive with a 5-2 win at Holcombe, Lorne Barnard and Dafydd Charles both scoring twice, only for Holcombe to gain revenge in the return with a 4-2 victory.

In 2012-13, Wimbledon pipped Holcombe to the Conference East tle and Holcombe began their campaign with a 4-2 home win and connued with a 3-0 win at Oxted.

2013-14 saw Southgate frustrate Holcombe with a championship win by a narrow one point margin. Holcombe showed no mercy, thrashing Oxted 9-2 in Kent, and then winning 6-2 a day later in a rearranged fixture, scheduled to be a home fixture for Oxted but held at Holcombe.

The following season, Holcombe finally escaped the Conference East and have been in the Premier Division ever since, and now joined by Oxted, ever-present members of the Conference East when it had second er status and last season champions of Division One South.

~ 18 ~ MATCHDAY NOTES University of Exeter v East Grinstead Last Season: (1 December 2019) University of Exeter 2 (Duncan Sco (2)) East Grinstead 2 (Wesley Jackson, Chris Griffiths)

All Premier Division meengs at Exeter (University of Exeter first): (2019-20) 2-2; (2018-19) 1-4; (2011-12) 0-2; (2009-10) 1-2

23 Sep 2018 – University of Exeter 1 (James Ferguson) East Grinstead 4 (Chris Griffiths (2), , David Condon)

19 Nov 2011 – University of Exeter 0 East Grinstead 2 (Rick Gay (2))

28 Feb 2010 – University of Exeter 1 (Ed Kelleher) East Grinstead 2 (Ben Payne, Rick Gay)

East Grinstead make the trip to Devon this weekend hoping to build on last week’s opening 2-1 home win over newly promoted Oxted. The University of Exeter lost 5-3 at home to Hampstead & Westminster last weekend, but can take heart from a beer second half performance aer Hampstead led 5-1 at the interval.

Last season’s meeng with the West Sussex club saw Exeter salvage their first point in four top flight meengs on home turf. Although Exeter were only able to stay for one season in their first two appearances in the Premier Division, they were compeve, only going down 2-1 and 2-0.

Having to wait for seven seasons before they had a third aempt, Exeter have managed to preserve their status, albeit that they couldn’t take part in any playoffs last season as the season was curtailed prematurely, and now they are hoping to keep their heads above water in an eleven team division in which two teams will be automacally relegated with the ninth placed team taking part in playoffs, aer the league is split into two aer everybody faces each other once.

Exeter’s meengs with its University rivals are likely to be key in whether they manage a fourth successive season in the Premier. Last season, their only home win came at the expense of relegated Reading, with Exeter able to secure a rare league double with a win in Berkshire. Exeter also won at Brooklands Manchester University but lost at home to their northern rivals, a result which consigned them to ninth place and normally force them to bale for survival. If they had managed a second league double, it would have been Brooklands finishing in ninth.

But COVID-19 ensured that the playoffs didn’t happen, so this season, Exeter will also want to get the beer of the University of Durham and Oxted to try and secure a much valued eighth place.

East Grinstead have a new management team with Tim Deakin and Dave Becke geng off to a winning start. But they will be realisc enough to know that history doesn’t mean anything and it’s the performance on the day which counts. And Exeter can be a tough place to go to, regardless of what results might suggest, especially considering last season’s draw.

The West Sussex club finished just three points ahead of Exeter in last season’s final standings, not what a club with such history, tradion and European experience a would expect and the hope will be that East Grinstead can secure another three points as they try and rebuild for the future.

~ 25 ~ National League Ins and Outs In Out Premier Division: Reading relegated to Division One South University of Durham promoted from Division One North Oxted promoted from Division One South

Premier Division increased from 10 to 11 teams for 2020-21

Division One North University of Durham promoted to Premier Division Cambridge City promoted from Conference East Deeside Ramblers promoted from Conference North Leeds relegated to Conference North

Division One South Reading relegated from Premier Division Oxted promoted to Premier Division Old Cranleighans promoted from Conference West Fareham relegated to Conference West

Conference East Cambridge City promoted to Division One North London Wayfarers promoted from South League Richmond switched from Conference West West Herts promoted from East League Bedford relegated to East League Chichester switched to Conference West

Conference North Deeside Ramblers promoted to Division One North Leeds relegated from Division One North University of Birmingham 2 promoted from Midlands League Alderley Edge relegated to North League University of Durham 2 promoted from North League Wakefield relegated to North League

Conference West Old Cranleighans promoted to Division One South Fareham relegated from Division One South Richmond switched to Conference East Chichester switched from Conference East University of Exeter 2 relegated to West League Plymouth Marjon promoted from West League

N.B. To ensure that the Conferences all had ten teams following the expansion of the Premier Division to eleven teams, only one of the three ninth placed teams (Wakefield) was relegated instead of the normal two. Therefore Cheltenham kept their place in the Conference West, when they would normally have been relegated to the West League. Bromley & Beckenham would have stayed up in the Conference East as the highest ranked ninth placed team.
