20200927 MHL Media Guide MEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE MATCHDAY MEDIA GUIDE 26/27 SEPTEMBER 2020 ~ 1 ~ Surbiton Start Their Title Defence In Style Defending champions Surbiton romped to a big opening day win for the second successive season, bea9ng Brooklands Manchester University 8-1 at Sugden Road, thanks to a five star performance from penalty corner specialist, Luke Taylor. In 2019-20, Reading were put to the sword, 10-1. Once again it was Ben Boon who opened Surbiton’s account, this 9me aMer just 30 seconds. Brooklands trailed 3-0 aMer eight minutes, Arjan Drayton Chana doubling Surbiton’s lead in the sixth minute, before Luke Taylor scored his first goal. Taylor struck again in the 17th minute before Peter Flanagan converted a 20th minute penalty corner to make the half 9me score 4-1. Taylor ran riot with goals in the 39th, 48th and 67th minutes before Rob Farrington completed the scoring in the 69th minute. Holcombe’s Nick Bandurak scored a hat-trick, including a last minute winner as Old Georgians went down 3-2 at Holcombe Park. Holcombe led 2-0, Bandurak scoring from open play in the fiMh minute and a 16th minute penalty corner but Old Georgians fought back to level at 2-2, thanks to Ashley Jackson’s 44th minute penalty stroke and Sam Ward’s penalty corner nine minutes later. Bandurak won the game with a penalty corner to avenge Holcombe’s 5-4 defeat in last season’s fixture. Hampstead & Westminster maintained their record of wins over the University of Exeter with a 5-3 win in Devon. Hampstead led 5-1 at the interval, Sam French opening the scoring in the fiMh minute before Charlie Taylor levelled in the ninth minute. Hywel Jones restored Hampstead’s lead in the 21st minute, all three goals coming from open play. Ma` Guise-Brown’s penalty corner brace in the 25th and 32nd minutes and James Oates’ open play goal in the 29th minute put the visitors in command. Exeter ba`led back and won the second half 2-0, Duncan Sco` scoring from the penalty spot in the 50th minute and Max Sydenham reducing the deficit to 5-3 from open play in the 56th minute. Newly promoted Oxted went down narrowly in their local derby at East Grinstead, Luke Emme`’s fourth minute open play goal and Louis Gi`ens’ 45th minute penalty corner enough to secure the points at Saint Hill in spite of Timothy Guise Brown scoring Oxted’s first ever top flight goal from a 63rd minute penalty corner. Wimbledon and Beeston fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Raynes Park High School. Beeston last won at Wimbledon in 2014 and over the last five seasons the result has alternated between a home win and a score draw. The pa`ern con9nued this season following Wimbledon’s 2-0 win in the last campaign. Rory Pa`erson’s 14th minute open play goal was cancelled out by Beeston’s Adam Dixon with a 19th minute penalty corner. Sam Apoola gave Beeston the lead in the 41st minute from open play but Wimbledon fought back to lead 3-2 thanks to Ian Sloan’s 52nd minute penalty corner and Pa`erson’s second goal of the game from open play with six minutes remaining, Chris Proctor stole a point with a 66th minute penalty corner. Tarsem Chagger The NPUA tweeted on 21 September “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Tarsem Chagger. Tarsem umpired at various levels for many years, before more recently enjoying a successful career as a match official. In addi9on, Beeston beat Surbiton 2-1 in the Championships semi-finals in 2011 and 3-2 aMer Beeston lost to Reading in Round 1, but the format allowed them to host Surbiton in Round 2 aMer Surbiton beat Cannock. Therefore, Surbiton lost ten straight na9onal league matches at Beeston.

In the ladies match visitors Wimbledon made a great start to the season at home against Swansea before losing on the road to ‘seasoned opposition’ in the form of Clifton Robinson. Holcombe started with a loss to Loughborough Students who confirmed their early season promise with a draw against Surbiton last weekend. Holcombe responded last weekend with a good win again Swansea. Two very strong squads coming up against each other today. In the men’s match, Wimbledon continue to recruit high quality players year on year rd to add to an already impressive squad that saw them finish 3 last year – losing Ed Horler was a big blow but they will fancy their chances to be in the mix come the end of the season.

    Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter January 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the eighteenth in our series of Newsletters. It marks a new scheme of trying to provide more relevant news quicker by reporting during the mid-season break in the National League calendar. It may be briefer but will be followed by an end of season edition as customary, although that, too, may have less content, for hopefully obvious reasons. Executive Summary The Club is in good heart, with both first teams well placed in their Leagues, the Women seemingly able to avoid the post promotion effect and able to maintain their showing of last season as newcomers. The Men have seen the hard work of pre-season reap rewards. A new team has evolved in quick time and has enjoyed success not seen in recent seasons and are well-placed at just more than the half way stage. Up to 14 January 2017, in the London League the Men’s 2nd XI and 3rd XI are leaders in the Premier Division and Division 1, respectively. Zak Hond XI are in ninth spot in the same League Division 1. The 4th XI are in tenth position in London League Division 2. In Division 3, the 5th XI are league leaders, with nine wins and three losses, a point ahead of London Wayfarers. In Division 5, the Hammers XI are in fifth place. Division 6 has two H&W teams: the Spaniards XI are fourth and the Thirsts XI are fifth. The Vets sit top of Veterans Division One, with nine wins and three losses but the Supervets are struggling a little, being seventh of eight in Supevets Division 1, helped by a win on 7 January 2017 against Chelmsford.

There are a few other items of news that can usefully be added now. MEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE FINALS For probably the best summary of Saturday’s match, we are indebted to the Ham & High Hampstead & Westminster saw their hopes of glory at the Hockey League finals weekend ended by Premier Division champions Wimbledon after a slender loss at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre.     Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter May 2009 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is our third of the series of revamped Newsletters and marks the end of the 2008/9 playing season. There will be news of the pitch replacement at Paddington Rec and the linked issue of funding and of course the Club’s success on the playing field, culminating in the seventh spot in the Premier Division secured by the Men’s 1’s, where there was the increasingly traditional H&W fight back, when matters seemingly had reached a low ebb. The Women’s 1st XI finished strongly in the middle of the South League, the stepping stone to the National League. Administratively there has been much activity, culminating in the negotiations with Westminster City Council over the replacement pitch and the Club’s longer tenure at Paddington Recreation Ground. Dan Fox’s selection by England for games in Germany on 9 and 10 May will hopefully boost the Men’s 1’s: we offer Dan all the congratulation this deserves. In their Memory John Matthews-Lane We were saddened to learn of the death a few months ago now of John Matthews-Lane, who died peacefully at Airedale Hospital, aged 76. John had been living in Bingley and upon renewing contact with him in recent times, he became an enthusiastic correspondent and supporter. John was the 1st XI centre-forward when the club re-formed after the War and led the forwards until the mid-late 1950's. He featured in the photograph (included in the Club’s History of its first 75 years) of the team that played in the first post-War game against Teddington.

    Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter April 2011 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the seventh in our series of revamped Newsletters. This looks back on the 2010/11 season and on to the challenges of next autumn. We cover some initiatives on the Rules of the game taken up this spring in Holland at the European Hockey League championship in some detail too, lest some of them see their way to FIH acceptance. International News We are delighted to learn that Men‟s 1 captain, Dan Fox has been called up for the Great Britain squad for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. And even more that he played in the opening win, by 3-1, against Malaysia, coming off the bench. The tournament will be held from 5 May until 15 May in Ipoh, Perak, a two hour drive north of Kuala Lumpur at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium. For those eager to attend, apparently there is no fee at the gate! This year‟s participants are Malaysia, Korea, India, Australia, Pakistan. Great Britain and New Zealand. Great Britain‟s campaign gets underway against the hosts Malaysia at 13:05 BST on Thursday 5 May. In 2010, the final was washed out, so India and Korea were adjudged joint champions. Australia beat Malaysia 5-3 to come third, with Malaysia fourth, Pakistan fifth, China sixth and Egypt in seventh place. In large measure this looks forward to the 2011/12 season and all the aspirations a new season carries. There is some inevitable reportage and also a look back to previous starts of seasons when things were different, even if some of the same issues seem to recur. Memorial Match This season’s Memorial Match was held on Sunday 11 September 2011 at Paddington Recreation Ground as mentioned in the earlier circular. On a warm and sunny day, Cyril Flajsner collected the Harry Watson Memorial Trophy after a 3-1 win to the Legends. International News In the last edition we promised greater coverage of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, especially following Dan Fox’s participation for Great Britain, the Club’s first representative since the mid 1960’s and Jim Deegan. Great Britain got the campaign off to a winning start as goals from Surbiton’s James Tindall, Loughborough Students’ Richard Smith and Wimbledon’s Rob Moore helped them to a 3-1 victory over hosts Malaysia in Ipoh on the opening Thursday. Head Coach Jason Lee handed Iain Lewers his Great Britain debut in a starting XI that included Reading’s Euro Hockey League hero goalkeeper Nick Brothers and saw East Grinstead’s Glenn Kirkham wearing the captain’s armband. Dan Fox made his GB debut, coming on from the bench.
