Yet their lasting power— from “There She Is” to Toddlers & Tiaras to pageant waves—is undeniable. What accounts for the enduring power of beauty pageants? This course draws on interdisciplinary scholarship across the social sciences and humanities to examine how and why pageantry and American femininity have become linked in the public consciousness as they transformed from beauty contests to the largest source of scholarship money available to women in this country. Together we will examine how pageantry intersects with major institutions—namely the educational system, but also the political system and mass media. By the end of this course you will be able to use beauty pageants as a lens to carefully examine these institutions, along with gender, race, age, and appearance, and apply that critical thinking to other cultural phenomena. This is a writing designated course, with no prerequisites, for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Sneaky Fitch exuded a well-crafted postmodern arrangement of Western stereotypes inherited from- screen influences. The title character, Sneaky Fitch (Charlie Cockett) figured the paragon of the low-life drunk everyone hated in Gopher Gulch. Cockett's performance offered the greatest acting and an unabashed approach to his role, gluing together an often times timid act- ing display by others in the cast.

The combined Miss UT Martin/Miss Tennessee Soybean Festival Scholarship Pageant- has been rescheduled. Previously scheduled for Nov. 5, the pageant now will be held Nov. 13, according to a release from the University of Tennessee at Martin. The event will begin at 7 p.m in the Boling University Center's Duncan Ballroom. You can read more about the pageant at the UT Martin website. Pre-sale tickets will be available in the UT Martin Student Life Office on the second floor of the Boling University Center until the week of the show, according to the release. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door prior to the competition, but advance purchase is recommended. The admission charge is $15 for the general public and $10 for UT Martin students with their university lD.     Miss America Organization apologizes for press release after insulting past participants LAUREN CARROLL Staff Writer The Miss America Organization has apologized for a scholarship announcement issued Monday, which drew criticize from past pageant contestants and volunteers and continued the more than yearlong "bye-bye bikini" controversy. The new scholarship added to the Miss America 2020 Competition was overshadowed by a statement toward the end of the news release that detailed why the scholarship's benefactor wasn't allowed to compete in a local MAO pageant in the 1980s. "In reaching out to the Miss America Organization, the donor made clear the important reason for the generous gift. As a young woman who wanted to compete in a local Miss America competition in the 1980s, she was discouraged by her parents because they believed 'Miss America does not look like us, and an educated woman does not parade around in a swimsuit,'" the news release states. Tuesday evening, the MAO released a statement addressed to Miss America supporters. "Yesterday, MAO announced a new scholarship and included a quote from the donor’s parents that has offended members of the Miss America community. MAO did not put the quote in the context of the 1980s in which it was spoken and the erroneous stereotypes that were prevalent at that time," the statement said. The quote attributed to the woman's parents struck a chord with many former Miss Americas and state titleholders who competed during the so-called "1.0" era of the pageant.
