2020–21 ANNUAL REPORT UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM 2020–21 ANNUAL REPORT ON THE COVER: Supporters who attended virtual Museum events around the country in recent months encountered these words. In the midst of a pandemic and rising manifestations of antisemitism and hate, they reminded us of our timeless mission. We hope they inspire you and give you a sense of pride in the work you have made possible. Dear Friends, The Museum has always brought together people from all walks of life. The Hall of Witness buzzed with voices young and old, from all corners of the country and the globe. Yet, for most of the past year, the building was silent. But thankfully the conversations and education did not stop. Because, as we know, antisemitism and hate did not stop. And we can’t ever stop what the pandemic forced us to do: make each impactful moment within the Museum walls available outside of them—from teacher training, to leadership programs and scholarly exchange, and especially learning from survivors. After all, you rarely see a young person today without a smartphone, which makes it essential for us to reach them where they are. For those of us who grew up with encyclopedias and card catalogues, seeing history presented in a dynamic digital format is intriguing; for younger generations, it’s expected. The past year has not changed what we teach—the lessons of the Holocaust and the dangers of unchecked hate are more urgent than ever. But it did transform how we teach, how we conduct research, and how we gather. The immense challenges we faced made us stronger and more innovative. But we couldn’t have done it without you. Our goal is to ensure we are not leaving anyone behind: Teachers who never could have come to Washington are attending virtual training—do all teachers know about the opportunity? Our Facebook Live public programs are viewed about 375,000 times every month—what other topics and platforms can help us reach even more people? Even though the Museum has reopened and the Hall of Witness again buzzes with visitors, our expanded work will continue to grow and reach new audiences, as it must, especially in light of rising antisemitism and other forms of hatred. The Holocaust may have receded in time, but it has not receded in relevance—and never will. Thank you for trusting us to meet the challenges and opportunities each new year will bring. Howard M.
