Miller drew attention to the illegal removal of -teens from the Warburton gullies, and moved that the -Minister for Forests be written to, urging that more notices be posted in the gullies near the township prohibiting the practice. At the suggestion of Mr. H. McColl, a similar request for the inclusion of the Kinglakc district was in- cluded in- the motion, which was seconded by Mr. A; E. Hod da - and earned. * Mr. F. 0, A, Barnard moved that a letter of congratula- tion* be scut to Sir A. E. Kitson on his recent appointment sk President of. the Oeulogical Seelion of the British Association tor the Advancement of, Science. Mr. F. Pitcher seconded tfic. motion, which was carried. ,.." - - EXHIBITION OF AQUARIA- . ,A very good exhibition of aquaria, consisting of ,flsh 7 newts, pond snails and aquatic insects, was shown in .several large glass tanhs and other receptacles. Mr. C. Barrett, G.MlZ.S., introduced the subject, and said that the keeping. of aquaria was a very old hobby which, nmtil late years, in Australia, had not been moch in vogue. Recently there had. been a con- siderable, revival in other States, and it had now .come.-. to Melbourne. .-.:-.* Mr. F. M: R: Hupp, B.A r Grthids, as a class of flowering plants, may be described aa notoriously unconventional—a characteristic which 4t least in part explains their fascination. There are interesting t facts, most of which are as yet very imperfectly accounted for, in connexion with the forms and habits of *many Auft- tralian orchids, which seem to be worthy of careful investi- gation by observers who may have good opportunities of studying them- It occurs to methat it may be useful to call attention to, such of those as have come under my own notice Except in one or Lwo iustanecs, T Have not. been able to reach any satisfactory explanation of them : but a statement of the phenomena which they present way scrtfc to stimulate in- terest. Elongation of the flowering stem after fertilization. 3. .Anomalies of habitat. 4* Anomalies of the flowering season. 5. Habits in connexion with basal leaves of terrestrials.. : 1, Giants' and Dwakps. The individuals of any species, of course., vary considerably in dimensions according to influences easily understood. Such variation, however, docs riot seem to account for the consis- tent occurrence in certain species of giant forms, differing -Bo notably from the type in appearance, that were it not for the identity of structural detail, specific separation would he in- evitable, The giant and the dwarf type appear to grow under precisely similar conditions, -often in the same locality. Con- sistently diminutive forms also occur, but more rarely. Calndenia camea., the commonest species of the genus, in the eastern States, includes both a giant and a dwarf. Travel- ling northward, the former probably begins on the Newcastle side of the Hawkesbury River, extending thence right up into the tropics, "and -apparently to Java. Dr. R. S. Rogers has named this form var. giganiBa. I have measured flowery from the Myall Lakes' district, over two inches from- tip, to tip of the segments. It is pale pink ov whitish, and almost scentless. Both giant and dwarf have the - tjharactoristic barred Jabftllum and cohunn of the species. Dr. Rogers records the dwarf from South Australia, Victoria, and Flinders Island: • I have found it in New.South * -- .- - Wales and' southern Tasmania. * V la Victoria there occurs a giant form of Plerastylii acwni- mht.     Action S tatement Flora and F auna Guarantee Act 1988 No. 21 7 Genoa River Correa Correa lawrenciana var. genoensis This Action Statement is based on a draft Recovery Plan prepared for this species by DSE under contract to the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. Description Genoa River Correa (Correa lawrenciana var. genoensis ) is an erect to spreading shrub which grows to 2 m in height (Walsh & Entwisle 1999). It has ovate leaves to 7 x 4 cm. The upper leaf surface is dark green, glossy and hairless; the lower surface is pale grey-green and densely covered with stellate hairs (Walsh & Entwisle 1999). The leaf margins are smooth. The flowers tend to be solitary, are drooping, yellow-green and tubular, with four curved, triangular lobes at the end of tube. They are hairy outside, and grow to 25 mm long (Walsh & Entwisle 1999; DNRE 2001). The calyx is hemispherical, more or less hairless, up to 5 mm long, and has four conspicuous teeth. The Genoa River Correa stamens protrude from the flower. Flowering (Photo:DSE/McCann ) largely occurs in spring (Walsh & Entwisle 1999). Genoa River Correa differs from the type variety in its prominently gland-dotted calyx with long acuminate lobes (Wilson 1961). The key to Mountain Correa ( Correa lawrenciana ) varieties in Walsh & Entwisle (1999) further distinguishes the Genoa Correa ( C. lawrenciana var. genoensis ) as having a green and glabrescent calyx. Distribution Genoa River Correa is restricted to a few very small populations in far-east Victoria fringing the Genoa River, and one population in south-eastern New South Wales, fringing Redstone Creek.

  • The Quest for Natural Biogeographic Regions
    Chapter 3 Carving up Australasia: the quest for natural biogeographic regions Most systematists will squirm at inferences derived from a non-monophyletic or artificial taxon. The importance of monophyly is critical to understanding the natural world and drawing inferences about past processes and events. Since the early 19th century, plant and animal geographers have also been concerned about correctly identifying natural areas. Plant geographer and taxonomist Augustin de Candolle tried to propose natural laws when proposing natural areas and failed. Humboldt abandoned natural classification and assigned vegetable forms, thereby creating a useful classification, which was unfortunately artificial. For early 19th century Australasian biogeographers, the concept of cladistic biogeography and area monophyly was decades away, while the importance of finding natural areas was immediate. Natural areas allowed the biogeographer to make inferences about the biotic evolution of a region such as Australia or New Zealand. Discovering the relationships between natural areas would allow for better inferences about dispersal pathways and evolutionary connections between continental floras and faunas, rather than proposing ephemeral land-bridges or sunken continents. Still, after 150 years of searching, biogeographers puzzle over the natural regions of Australasia. Why natural regions? As in biological systematics, artificial taxa represent a pastiche of distantly related taxa (think of the term ‘insectivores’, which would include all insect eating animals, such as funnel-web spiders, bee-eaters and echidnas). Artificial taxa are more closely related to other taxa than they are to themselves. The same is true for biogeography – artificial areas, such as ‘Australia’, are composites that are more closely related to other areas than they are to themselves.

    Having held the position in an acting capacity, Etheridge experienced no dif­ ficulty in assuming the full-time position of curator on 1 January 1895. He had, of course, to relinquish his half-time post in the Geological Survey but, as consulting palaeontologist to the Survey, he retained a foot in each camp and continued to publish under the aegis of both institutions. His scientific staff consisted of six men. Whitelegge was still active in his researches on marine invertebrates and was engaged in testing the efficiency of formalin as a preservative. North continued his studies on birds, but somewhat less actively since, to free Brazier for work on his long-delayed catalogue, he had been made responsible also for the ethnological, numismatic and historical collections. Conchology was now in the hands of Charles Hedley, first appointed in 1891 on a temporary basis to handle the routine matters of this department and to leave Brazier more time for his catalogue. Born in England, Hedley came to Australia at the age of twenty to seek relief from asthma and after a short period working on an oyster lease on Stradbroke Island, turned to fruit growing at Boyne Island. When a badly fractured left arm rendered him unfit for heavy work, he moved to Brisbane where, in 1889, he obtained a position on the staff of the Queensland Museum and developed an interest in shells. Finding that the collections and library of that insti­ tution were inadequate for his needs, he moved to Sydney and, within a few months, was recruited to the Museum at the age of thirty.

Parnell Excerpt More information 1 Geomorphology and the Great Barrier Reef 1.1 Introduction The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the largest coral reef system in the world. It extends from 248 300 S in the south to 98 300 S in the north, a distance of about 2300 km along the north-east shelf of Australia (Fig. 1.1). Accurate estimates of dimensions and other geographical data are available only for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (345 500 km2) or the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (348 000 km2) which also includes islands excluded from the Park. Within this area are 2900 reefs occupying over 20 000 km2 or 9% of the 224 000 km2 shelf area (Hopley et al., 1989). However, this administrative area does not include the contiguous shelf of Torres Strait, data for which are more scant. The Strait is 150 km wide and east of the line of high islands, which link Australia to Papua New Guinea, the shelf has a width of over 200 km. Estimated total shelf area here is about 37 000 km2 and, relying on comparative data from the adjacent Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (which ends at 108 420 S) there may be a further 750 reefs and shoals with a total area of about 6000 km2. The GBR is also one of the best studied in the world. Although first described during James Cook’s voyage of exploration in 1770, because of science’s preoccupation with atolls, it did not become a major focus until after the establishment of the Great Barrier Reef Committee in 1922 and the ground-breaking year-long Royal Society Expedition to Low Isles near Cairns in 1928–29 (see below and Bowen and Bowen, 2002).

Social insects dispose of dead individuals in various fashions to prevent further contact between corpses and living members in a colony. Focusing on three groups of eusocial insects (bees, ants, and termites) in two phylogenetically distant orders (Hymenoptera and Isoptera), we review mechanisms of death recognition, convergent and divergent behavioral re- sponses toward dead individuals, and undertaking task allocation from the perspective of division of labor. Distinctly different solutions (e.g., corpse removal, burial and cannibalism) have evolved, independently, in the holometabolous hymenopterans and hemimetabolous isopterans toward the same problem of corpse management. In addition, issues which can lead to a better understanding of the roles that undertaking behavior has played in the evolution of eusociality are discussed.
