his year marks the 20th anniversary of the successful Tculmination of Operation Vijay wherein brave soldiers of the Indian Army overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, hostile terrain, weather and a determined enemy occupying dominating heights, to win the Kargil war. On this momentous occasion, the Indian Army is celebrating this victory in memory of its brave martyrs with events covering a myriad spectrum. One of the major events planned during the celebrations is the relay of a Victory Flame from National War Memorial (NWM) in New Delhi to Kargil War Memorial at Dras. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh handed over the Flame to ace Army shooter Subedar Jitu Rai who represented India as the first torch bearer, at the NWM on July 14, 2019. Before that Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat ignited the ‘mashaal’ from the eternal flame of the NWM. Victory Flame symbolises the coalescence of the souls of the Kargil War martyrs. The Victory Flame will be carried by Indian Army’s outstanding sportsmen and war heroes. It will pass through nine major towns/cities of North India and finally culminate at the Karambhoomi of the martyrs at the Kargil War Memorial located at Dras on July 26, 2019, where it will be received by the COAS. The Kargil War is known for the determination, bravery, courage and daring mettle of the Indian Army troops who took to task the enemy intruders occupying strategic heights in Indian Territory. As a part of celebrating 20 years of Kargil Victory commemorative treks were organized by 13 JAK RIF (Bravest of the Brave) and 18 GRENADIERS to Batra Top and TIGER HILL on July 7, 2019. Many battles define the Kargil War and one such battle which stands out is the battle of Pt 4875. July 16-31, 2019 Sainik Samachar 9 20 Years of Kargil War Commemorative Trek to Khalubar

he year 2019 witnesses the 20th Tanniversary of the Kargil War and this important milestone was celebrated in a grand manner by the Indian Army with a view to rekindle the pride and valour of all the gallant soldiers who took part in OP VIJAY. One of the severest battles fought during the Kargil War was the Battle of Khalubar in the Batalik Sector. Despite the harsh terrain, the valiant soldiers of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles were successful in forcing the enemy to evict from his positions thus contributing a victory which will be remembered till times to come. The battalion was awarded the Battle Honour “Batalik” and Theatre Honour “Kargil” and gallantry awards to include one Param Vir Chakra and three Vir Chakras. To commemorate this victory as part of the 20th anniversary of OP VIJAY, a trekking expedition to Khalubar was undertaken by the 1st Bn of the 11 Gorkha Rifles. The objective of the trek was to celebrate the triumph of the Battalion as also to pay homage to the brave ‘Kirantis’. After inducting into Leh, the team completed its mandatory acclimatization and necessary preparations by July 5, 2019. A strength of two Junior Commissioned Officers and eight Other Ranks participated in this trek which was flagged off on July 8, 2019. The team covered a distance of about 10 kms before summiting Khalubar.
