    Vegetation On Fraser Island Imagine towering pines, rainforest trees with three metre girths, rare and ancient giant ferns, eucalypt forests with their characteristic pendulous leaves, lemon-scented swamp vegetation and dwarfed heathland shrubs covered in a profusion of flowers. Now imagine them all growing on an island of sand. Two of Fraser Island’s unique features are its diversity of vegetation and its ability to sustain this vegetation in sand, a soil that is notoriously low in nutrients essential to plant growth. Plants growing on the dunes can obtain their nutrients (other than nitrogen) from only two sources - rain and sand. Sand is coated with mineral compounds such as iron and aluminium oxides. Near the shore the air contains nutrients from sea spray which are deposited on the sand. In a symbiotic relationship, fungi in the sand make these nutrients available to the plants. These in turn supply various organic compounds to the fungi which, having no chlorophyll cannot synthesise for themselves. Colonising plants, such as spinifex, grow in this nutrient poor soil and play an integral role in the development of nutrients in the sand. Once these early colonisers have added much needed nutrients to the soil, successive plant communities that are also adapted to low nutrient conditions, can establish themselves. She-oaks ( Allocasuarina and Casuarina spp.) can be found on the sand dunes of the eastern beach facing the wind and salt spray. These hardy trees are a familiar sight throughout the island with their thin, drooping branchlets and hard, woody cones. She-oaks are known as nitrogen fixers and add precious nutrients to the soil.

ANNUAL REPORT This is my second year of co-ordinating the Study Group and I admit to a certain amount of satisfaction at our achievements in that time. Membership has increased from 79 to 124. Contact during the year was through 4 Newsletters, various correspondence, and by meeting very many members. Three meetings were held at Sydney venues and a NSW campout. An active Brisbane branch that has recently been established, ably organised by Ran Twaddle, held 2 meetings in pleasant aurrowdings. Seed exchange is increasing and the first tentative steps in organlsing a cuttings exchange have been taken. Esther Taylor of Ipswich has accepted the position of Plant Registrar. We are setting up a library of donated material. A Flews- letter exchange with kindred groups has been initiated. We again have a bank balance. I would particularly wish to thank those many members for their various contributions - news and views for the Newsletter, material for the library, seed for offering to others, plants for fund raising, cash donations, the hospitality of people providing meeting places, the welcome given to Ber1.l and me by those . members we were able to contact on our travels in gaining knowledge on Rainforest generally and in seek- ing items and ideas for Newsletters. Relict species and lineages are the elements of this World Heritage value. Attribute of OUV (a) The Age of the Pteridophytes Significance One of the most significant evolutionary events on this planet was the adaptation in the Palaeozoic Era of plants to life on the land. The earliest known (plant) forms were from the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. These were spore-producing plants which reached their greatest development 100 million years later during the Carboniferous Period. This stage of the earth’s evolutionary history, involving the proliferation of club mosses (lycopods) and ferns is commonly described as the Age of the Pteridophytes. The range of primitive relict genera representative of the major and most ancient evolutionary groups of pteridophytes occurring in the Wet Tropics is equalled only in the more extensive New Guinea rainforests that were once continuous with those of the listed area.
