NIT participants: Maryland, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph’s. Potential oppo- nent: Arizona State. College Basketball Invitational participants: George Mason (twice), Rich- mond. Potential opponent: College of Charleston. CollegeInsider.com Tournament participant: Boston University. u Along with half of its Atlantic 10 games set for national television on NBCSN or CBSSN thanks to the league’s new multimedia rights agreement, as well as the 2013 Wooden Legacy on the ESPN Networks, GW men’s basketball now has a record 22 broadcasts slated for the 2013-14 campaign.

Eight games are set to air on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic (CSN), with ad- ditional games carried on MASN, NESN, Fox Sports Midwest, CSS, CSN Phila- delphia and SNY. << GW Men’s Basketball Enjoys ‘A Good Year’ in 2012-13 The 2012-13 campaign - the 99th season in program history - was a good one for George Washington men’s basketball, including a summer trip to Italy, a memorable Colonials Invasion at its former home at Fort Myer, and a near upset of 6th-seeded UMass in front of 700 alumni at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. While a 13-17 record won’t qualify as great, there’s plenty of good that can be extracted from the 3.5-game improve- ment from 2011-12:

u Four of the Colonials’ top five scorers were in their first season with the program, including three in their first season of collegiate basketball.

u GW faced 15 teams (a total of 17 times) that would reach postseason play, including playing within a possession of three NCAA Tournament teams (Kansas State, Temple, Butler).

u The Colonials played 16 contests decided by single-digits last season, going 6-10 with close wins against postseason participants James Madi- son and Massachusetts and narrow losses to the likes of Kansas State, Rutgers, Temple, La Salle, Butler, Saint Louis and the Minutemen.

u GW started four freshmen for more than half the season and was one of only two teams in the nation, along with Army, to start at least four rookies. GW Hoops to Honor Wizard of Westwood in Wooden Legacy GW men’s basketball will participate in the all-new Wooden Legacy during the 2013 holiday in Orange County, California. GW will be one of eight teams to take part in the newly-named event that combines the former John R. Wooden Classic and the Anaheim Classic - the eight-team, three-day, 12-game bracketed event that has been staged the past six years in Anaheim. u “The partnership with Coach Wooden and the Wooden family just adds to our excitement to compete in this event with such a competitive field,” said Head Coach Mike Lonergan. “The photos of when I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet Coach Wooden in 1997 still hang in my office today. He truly cared about his players reaching their potential as players and people, which made him a great coach, but more than that, a great human being. We’re proud to be able to honor him in the Wooden Legacy.” u With approximately 5,000 combined alumni in Los Angeles and Orange County, 2,000 in nearby San Diego and another 4,000 up the coast in the Bay Area, Orange County will be covered in Buff and Blue as the Colonials com- pete against arguably one of the toughest multi-team event fields in college basketball next season. u Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, College of Charleston, Creighton, Mar- quette, Miami (Fla.) and San Diego State will comprise the new Wooden Leg- acy. Six of those teams reached the postseason and won at least 22 games in 2012-13, with Creighton, Marquette, Miami and San Diego State all advancing to the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. u The event’s first two rounds will be held at Fullerton’s on Thurs- day, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29, while the final round will be held at Anaheim’s on Sunday, Dec. 1. All of the event’s 12 contests will be tele- vised on the ESPN networks. He finished the season among the Atlantic 10 leaders in scoring (26th), rebounding (2nd), percentage (50.6%, 14th), blocked shots (2nd), offensive rebounds (2.5, 9th) and defensive rebounds (6.2, 2nd). u Armwood, who enters his final season of eligibility in 2013-14, had one of the best individual seasons for a GW player since Yinka Dare in the mid-1990’s, recording the highest blocks (68) and rebounds (263) totals since Dare’s career from 1992-94, while adding a team-high 11.9 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting.

Garino Garners Preseason Atlantic 10 Honor >> u Patricio Garino joined teammate Isaiah Armwood in earning Preseason At- lantic 10 All-Defensive Team accolades from the league’s head coaches and select media. u Garino led the team and ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 (second in A-10 only games at 2.4 spg) with a GW freshman record 68 steals (2.3 spg) in 2012-13. His 68 thefts bested the previous rookie mark set by Carl Elliott in 2003-04. u The 6-foot-6 combo guard-forward did a little bit of everything for the Colonials as a freshman - he was GW’s third-leading scorer at 8.8 points per game, and was second on the team in assists (62) and three-pointers (16), fourth in blocks (13) and fifth in rebounding (101). u Larsen finished 12th in the A-10 in field goal percentage and 15th in offen- sive rebounds (2.2) in 2012-13.

Coach Lonergan Seeks More From McDonald & Mo in Backcourt >> u GW will look to get more offensive production from sophomore point guard Joe McDonald - the Colonials went 6-0 when he scored 11-or-more points last season. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 7.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists as a rookie in 2012-13.

Over his first two recruiting classes at GW, Coach Lonergan and his staff have attracted six players from Metro D.C. programs, including four Washington Post All-Met selections, and five players with experience in international competition. u Indiana graduate and transfer Maurice Creek, who is in his final season of eligibility, was among the highest scoring freshmen in the country dur- ing his debut season at IU in 2009-10, averaging 16.4 points through 12 games, including 31 against No. 4 Kentucky in December 2009, before being limited to 42 games over the next three seasons due to injury.

u A 6-foot-2 shooting guard, Nick Griffin led Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Rockville, Md., to a 24-3 overall record and a third straight Maryland 4A state final four appearance as a senior in 2013. He averaged a team-best 17.8 points and made 85 three pointers, the fifth-highest total in the Metro D.C. area, to earn Third Team All-Met honors from . u Griffin, who signed an NLI with GW in November 2012, was also an honor- able mention All-Met selection as a junior at Magruder in 2012. He averaged 17 points and made 91 triples to help the Colonels to a 26-1 mark and a Mary- land 4A state championship.

u Miguel Cartagena, a 6-foot-1 guard from Aibonito, Puerto Rico, joined Griffin in signing an NLI after two seasons at Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla., the same scholastic program that produced rising GW sophomore guard Patricio Garino. He helped the Eagles to a combined 48-6 record the past two seasons and appearances in the championship game of both the 2012 and 2013 ESPN National High School Invitational (NHSI). As a senior this past season, Cartagena helped Montverde win the prestigious NHSI, City of Palms Classic and Montverde Academy Invi- tational Tournament (MAIT) titles and achieve a No. 1 final national rank- ing in all three major polls (ESPN, USA Today, Prep Nation) with a 25-2 record. Cartagena represented Puerto Rico in the 2011 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship, where he led the event in scoring at 22.4 points over five games.

u Skyler White, a 6-foot-8 forward from Clyde Hill, Wash., will come to GW after two seasons at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon, Mass., a prep program that had more than two dozen players competing in NCAA Division I in 2012-13. u Nemanja Mikic, who hails from Novi Sad, Serbia and enters his final season of eligibility with 149 three-pointers in 92 career games at GW, completed his undergraduate studies in just three years and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance from GW in May 2013. He was named to the CoSIDA/ Capital One Academic All-District 2 First Team in January, and became the third GW men’s basketball player to earn multiple Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team honors with his repeat selection this past March. He has been named to the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in five of his six semesters at GW, as well as all six semesters on the GW Athletics Academic Dean’s List with a 3.0+ GPA.

u In July, Mikic was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, which recognizes collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics, for the second con- secutive year. Mikic was among more than 700 recipients of the 2012-13 award across all three divi- sions of the NCAA, as well as the NAIA. He was one of 175 Division I student-athletes on the Honors Court, including one of five from the Atlantic 10 Conference.

u When not serving as a team captain on the GW men’s basketball team, or earning the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for being in the top two percent of GPA in his pre-med/chemistry curricu- lum, Kopriva serves as a campus and community leader at the George Washington University.

u Kopriva’s list of community service efforts include Team Logistics Coordinator managing other student volunteers for the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) hosted at GW in 2012; the university’s Freshman Day of Service and MLK Day of Service; volunteering at the St. Mary’s Court Elderly Home near the GW campus; and basketball clinics for USA Basketball’s Hoops for Troops, and U.S. military installations NSA Naples and Camp Darby as part of GW Basketball’s Summer 2012 tour of Italy.

u His most notable service initiative came in spring 2013 with Lemonade Day DC, an experiential learn- ing program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business - a lemonade stand. John spearheaded more than 30 GW student-athletes’ participation with Lemonade Day - first by coor- dinating multiple visits to Northwest D.C.’s Paul Charter School to teach sixth- and seventh-graders a 14-step entrepreneurial business plan. On Lemonade Day DC on April 14, those middle school students mentored by John and other student-athletes put the skills learned over a month of instruction into action by launching their own businesses at lemonade stands on the GW campus and throughout the district.

<< Mike Brey ‘82, Kwame Evans ‘96 Part of GW HOF Class of 2014 u ‘82, a former student-athlete who competed in men’s bas- ketball, will be inducted for the success he achieved beyond GW. One of the most successful college basketball coaches in the country over the past two decades, Brey finished his collegiate playing career as a Colo- nial in 1982. He led GW with 116 assists in 24 games en route to team MVP honors during the 1981-82 campaign before earning his bachelor’s degree in physical education. His coaching career over three decades included time spent under Hall of Fame mentors like and Mike Krzyzewski before he became a decorated head coach himself. The Big East Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2011, a year in which he led Notre Dame to 27 victories and was chosen National Coach of the Year by the AP, Sports Illustrated and CBSSports.com, Brey has 13 20- win seasons to his credit and 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Brey will be honored in a special ceremony on January 14 at the Charles E. Smith Center when GW men’s basketball hosts VCU.

u Kwame Evans ‘96 is one of the best players in GW men’s basketball history. Evans helped the Colonials to 78 victories and four trips to the postseason during his career, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 1993, 1994 and 1996. During the magical run to the 1993 NCAA Tour- nament Sweet 16, Evans tallied team highs of 19 points in the NCAA first round victory over New Mexico and 13 points against Michigan in the Sweet 16. As a sophomore in 1993-94, Evans was the team’s third- leading scorer at 13.2 points per game as GW made the NCAA Tourna- ment once again. He then led the team and the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19.4 points per game in 1994-95, and again paced the Colonials at 18.7 points per game en route to the NCAA Tournament in 1995-96, earning First Team All-Conference accolades each season.
