Liverpool Parish Church Our Lady & St Nicholas LIVERPOOL PARISH CHURCH OUR LADY & ST NICHOLAS “The Passion of Christ, stained glass panel in the font by artist Katharine Bayes, 2019.” LENT PROGRAMME 2019 A WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR OF LIVERPOOL This year’s Lent Programme for the City contains many of the elements of our ministry: worship, thought leadership, music, art, and social action. We are delighted to welcome the Archbishop of York to Liverpool Parish Church at the start of Lent at the beginning of his three day mission to the Diocese of Liverpool: at the end of the service on Ash Wednesday he will go out into the City, and we are following his lead and taking two more events in our Programme ‘off site’ and into the City. For 800 years the Church has been opening its doors to the City: they are open for you this Lent. Wednesday 6th March | 12.15pm Celebrant: The Archbishop of York assisted by the Bishop of Liverpool and Leaders of other Churches in the Region Lent in the City of Liverpool always begins with our lunchtime service. This year we are joined by the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, along with the Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, and the Bishops of Liverpool and Warrington. After the service they will head into the retail district to meet the people of the City. Friday 8th March | 8.00am Business Breakfast with the Archbishop of York (invitation only) The Archbishop will speak to an invited audience of business leaders from the City on the subject of leadership in the contemporary world. Saturday 9th March | 7.00pm St John Passion, by J.S. Bach Liverpool Bach Collective Liverpool Bach Collective was formed five years ago, and it aims to perform a cantata by J.S. Bach in the region every month as part of an act of worship. For the second time the Collective will perform the St John Passion with an ensemble of twelve players and a chorus of sixteen singers including the international tenor Nicholas Mulroy as the Evangelist. Tickets are free, but please book via www.eventbrite.com Wednesday 27th March | 7.00pm Bishop in the Bar The Rt Revd Beverley Mason, the Bishop of Warrington, will join us for a drink and conversation as she tells us about her Christian discipleship. We shall meet in the basement room of Ma Boyle’s, next to the Church. The bar will be open… Thursday 4th April | 10.00am Homelessness and Rough Sleeping - Who Cares? (a half day conference) In association with the Community Foundation Merseyside and chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson, this conference is based around the themes of Understanding – Engagement – Action. With high profile speakers and panel, the aim is to engage the private sector and all those provoked by the issue of homelessness with the opportunities we have to end it. At 12.30pm a sculpture of the Homeless Jesus by Timothy Schmalz will be unveiled in the Church Gardens. Friday 5th April | 6.30pm St John Passion, by A. Scarlatti Early Music as Education A generation before Bach, Scarlatti’s Passio Secundum Ioannem was written in Naples in 1685 where he was ‘maestro di cappella’ in the royal chapel. This is the first performance of a new critical edition of the manuscript by academics Dr Alberto Sanna and Sophie Mahar. The performance will be from our EMAE Orchestra in Residence www.emae.co.uk For details of Holy Week and Easter Services, please see the church website Advance Notice The veteran activist Peter Tatchell will speak at St Nick’s at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16 October. You can find us on Chapel Street, just opposite the Liver Building. There has been worship on the site since the 13th century, and our ministry has evolved over the years as the shape of Liverpool has changed. Today you are just as likely to find tourists in the church as city workers or local residents. We value our civic and maritime connections, and continue to have a place at the heart of the life of Liverpool. PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. • Holy Trinity (Transform) Bishops Statement
A statement from our Bishops Priest in Charge Holy Trinity, St Helens Bishops’ Statement on the appointment of a new Priest in Charge to Parr Mount Holy Trinity (St Helens) Dear Applicant, We warmly welcome your interest in this post and commend our Diocese and the parish of Holy Trinity to your prayerful consideration and discernment. Thank you for taking the time to think through whether it might be right under God for you to minister with us. Holy Trinity is a valued member of the Diocesan family. The spirit of the church is evangelical/charismatic. As bishops we expect its distinctive witness to continue, flourish and develop under the guidance of its new leader. If you come to this Diocese, we and our Diocesan colleagues commit ourselves to support, sustain and resource you in your ministry. The most important gift you can bring to your people is your best self, flourishing in your ministry and in your personal life. Nourishing your best self under God is a matter for you, supported by us all. We expect, and would hold you accountable for, a high level of personal responsibility from you in the conduct of your ministry within the direction to which we are committed together. With this in mind we want to be as clear as we can about our commitment and our expectations from the start. Vision and purpose For many years we have been working to achieve growth in discipleship, in transformative strength and in numbers across our Diocese. We have expressed this purpose in different ways over the years, but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the purposes of the Church of England as a whole.

  • A Year of Christian Worship at St Aidan's 2017-2018 Monday 4Th
A Year Of Christian Worship At St Aidan’s 2017-2018 Monday 4th September The school year began, as always, with Eucharist which was attended by 90 school staff and was led by our local parish priest and St Aidan’s governor, Rev Matthew Evans. Friday 29th September to Sunday 1st October On 29th September, we took 32 pupils from Years 8-11 to Marrick Priory for our annual Chapel Away Weekend. Pupils took part in a range of activities including outdoor pursuits, led by Centre staff and spiritual reflection and worship led by the team from St Aidan’s. The theme for the weekend was “Connecting” and pupils took part in games, discussion and Bible study tasks to think about how they might better connect with their friends, their families and with God. It was a pleasure to see the increasing confidence and enthusiasm of all the students as they engaged with such diverse tasks, renewing and often forging friendships across year groups over the course of the weekend. We maintained our usual pattern of praying together each morning and evening and ended our weekend with a short act of worship in the Priory chapel. Wednesday 11th October We were delighted to welcome pupils and their families to the first school-wide worship event of the year – our Harvest Festival. The service was as well attended as ever and saw contributions from a Year 7 drama group, Year 8 dancers, Chamber Choir and Junior Choir. Our speaker for the evening was the vicar of St Peter’s, Rev Alan Garrow, whose message focused on the Lord’s Prayer and being thankful for our “daily bread”.

Prayer Diary October 2020 Foreword from Bishop Martin What a strange year this has been! As 2020 began no one could have predicted that the Covid-19 Coronavirus would sweep across our world with such devastating effect. At Do not worry about anything, a local, national and international level all but in everything by prayer and our lives have been affected. We may have supplication with thanksgiving let been very ill ourselves, or lost loved ones your requests be made known to or neighbours. As a diocese we are facing God. And the peace of God, which unprecedented financial challenges, as surpasses all understanding, will are so many businesses large and small. guard your hearts and your minds Everyone, in different ways is facing new in Christ Jesus. levels of uncertainty and insecurity with people in our poorer areas Philippians 4.6-7 and amongst our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities often the worst hit of all. At times like this we need to pray. Jesus said, ‘How blessed are those who know their need of God, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.’ In praying for others and for ourselves we bring our emptiness to God for him to fill with his love and promise. We bring our despair to God for him to fill with his boundless stores of hope. We bring our grief to God that all may know the peace that comes from God alone. In lockdown I needed a routine of daily prayer at home to bring me through, and millions of people in England began to connect with God through private or family prayer and through worship online or by phone in their homes.
