LIVERPOOL PARISH CHURCH OUR LADY & ST NICHOLAS “The Passion of Christ, stained glass panel in the font by artist Katharine Bayes, 2019.” LENT PROGRAMME 2019 A WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR OF LIVERPOOL This year’s Lent Programme for the City contains many of the elements of our ministry: worship, thought leadership, music, art, and social action. We are delighted to welcome the Archbishop of York to Liverpool Parish Church at the start of Lent at the beginning of his three day mission to the Diocese of Liverpool: at the end of the service on Ash Wednesday he will go out into the City, and we are following his lead and taking two more events in our Programme ‘off site’ and into the City. For 800 years the Church has been opening its doors to the City: they are open for you this Lent. Wednesday 6th March | 12.15pm Celebrant: The Archbishop of York assisted by the Bishop of Liverpool and Leaders of other Churches in the Region Lent in the City of Liverpool always begins with our lunchtime service. This year we are joined by the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, along with the Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, and the Bishops of Liverpool and Warrington. After the service they will head into the retail district to meet the people of the City. Friday 8th March | 8.00am Business Breakfast with the Archbishop of York (invitation only) The Archbishop will speak to an invited audience of business leaders from the City on the subject of leadership in the contemporary world. Saturday 9th March | 7.00pm St John Passion, by J.S. Bach Liverpool Bach Collective Liverpool Bach Collective was formed five years ago, and it aims to perform a cantata by J.S. Bach in the region every month as part of an act of worship. For the second time the Collective will perform the St John Passion with an ensemble of twelve players and a chorus of sixteen singers including the international tenor Nicholas Mulroy as the Evangelist. Tickets are free, but please book via www.eventbrite.com Wednesday 27th March | 7.00pm Bishop in the Bar The Rt Revd Beverley Mason, the Bishop of Warrington, will join us for a drink and conversation as she tells us about her Christian discipleship. We shall meet in the basement room of Ma Boyle’s, next to the Church. The bar will be open… Thursday 4th April | 10.00am Homelessness and Rough Sleeping - Who Cares? (a half day conference) In association with the Community Foundation Merseyside and chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson, this conference is based around the themes of Understanding – Engagement – Action. With high profile speakers and panel, the aim is to engage the private sector and all those provoked by the issue of homelessness with the opportunities we have to end it. At 12.30pm a sculpture of the Homeless Jesus by Timothy Schmalz will be unveiled in the Church Gardens. Friday 5th April | 6.30pm St John Passion, by A. Scarlatti Early Music as Education A generation before Bach, Scarlatti’s Passio Secundum Ioannem was written in Naples in 1685 where he was ‘maestro di cappella’ in the royal chapel. This is the first performance of a new critical edition of the manuscript by academics Dr Alberto Sanna and Sophie Mahar. The performance will be from our EMAE Orchestra in Residence www.emae.co.uk For details of Holy Week and Easter Services, please see the church website Advance Notice The veteran activist Peter Tatchell will speak at St Nick’s at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16 October. You can find us on Chapel Street, just opposite the Liver Building. There has been worship on the site since the 13th century, and our ministry has evolved over the years as the shape of Liverpool has changed. Today you are just as likely to find tourists in the church as city workers or local residents. We value our civic and maritime connections, and continue to have a place at the heart of the life of Liverpool.
