THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Wisdom’s Missionary: Alfred the Great and the Pursuit of Wisdom in Anglo-Saxon Spirituality A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of the Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy By James Andrew Estes Washington, DC 2016 Wisdom’s Missionary: Alfred the Great and the Pursuit of Wisdom in Anglo-Saxon Spirituality James Andrew Estes, PhD Director: Joshua Benson, PhD Co-Director: Lilla Kopár, PhD Abstract Alfred, King of Wessex (r. 871-899), is commonly studied as a military, political, and educational leader and reformer in Anglo-Saxon England, but not as a religious leader, and his cultural reform program’s translation of Latin works into Old English receives little attention in scholarship on Christian spirituality or medieval English vernacular theology. Such inattention is a symptom of the larger problem that Anglo-Saxon Christianity, particularly with regard to its vernacular literature, is often overlooked in the study of medieval Christian spirituality. This dissertation repositions Alfred as an Anglo-Saxon spiritual authority dedicated to teaching and learning for the purpose of Christian spiritual formation. It interprets two texts from Alfred’s reign: the Vita Ælfredi by Asser, and Alfred’s Old English translation of Gregory the Great’s Cura pastoralis. These works are treated as primary theological sources for examining Alfred’s role as a wisdom seeker and spiritual authority. The Vita Ælfredi intentionally depicts Alfred as a kingly wisdom figure with a lifelong devotion to the study of religious literature. -

Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992. Never before was there a single measure involving so vast financial interests as the legislation involving the proposed union, or "merging," of the New York, Xew Haven & Hartford Railroad Company with that of the Boston & Maine; and certainly no legislative hearing ever before had before it within the same hour two railroad presidents of so great influ- ence as President Mellen of the former and President Tuttle of the lat- ter, both of whom were before the committee on railroads on the same afternoon. This session was marked also by the passage of the "anti- bucket-shop" legislation, and of acts to enable savings hanks to furnish life msurance at cost, and to compel one day's rest in seven as well as to perfect the eight-hour law in accordance with the wishes of organized labor. -

Football Guide 2018YOUR GUIDE TO THE AFL SEASON AT THE MCG STAY INFORMED W www.mcc.org.au twitter.com/MCC_Members facebook.com/melbournecricketclub Ticketing VISITOR TICKETS MCC visitor tickets went on sale on Wednesday February 28 (for rounds 1-22) and will go on sale on Wednesday August 8 at 9.00am for Round 23 matches. For Full and Restricted members there is a limit of four visitor tickets per member for all matches except Anzac Day, when the maximum is two. See facing page for Provisional member entitlements. Members are strongly encouraged to purchase their visitor ticket requirements in advance. Children aged 6-14 are admitted free to all Sunday matches, as well as the Round 15 Carlton v Port Adelaide match and all Round 23 matches. However, members will still be required to either obtain a nil-value, barcoded ticket for each child through Ticketek (normal transaction fees still apply) from our membership services staff in advance or on the day of the match. These tickets will still form part of a member’s allowed visitor ticket LEGEND allocation. For all other matches children aged 6-14 will require a visitor ticket purchased at the relevant price to enter the Reserve. Children under the age of six are admitted free of charge, and do not require a ticket. RE-SELLING OF VISITOR TICKETS The remaining unshaded areas are available for members and visitors on a walk-up basis.
