Academic staff and researchers are reminded to update their Research Engine profile by March 18th. The research centre review process is coming up.

9. Library [V. SMYTH]

V Smyth noted the change of name from DCU Libraries to DCU Library.

“Special collections” section of the Library is now available on the Glasnevin campus, Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 1pm or 2pm to 4pm. Requests can also be made to access outside of these times. This collection is separated from main catalogue, some of which is now borrowable. Chair noted the new policy to remove dust jacket and as the faculty operate a scheme to fund academic colleagues in relation to same it was requested that dust jackets remain. ACTION: V. Smyth

The Chair reported on student disquiet regarding the noise levels at the Starbucks counter in the St Patrick’s Library. The students have arranged a meeting with library management and have agreed to report back to the Chair.

R. Sasamoto enquired if the Library has a policy on general fiction purchases. V. Smyth will investigate and advise at the next meeting. ACTION: V. Smyth

Back issues of journals was discussed. St. Patrick’s campus Library present journals for up to 10 years on shelf. If colleagues need more years available a case can be made to the Library. While nothing is disposed the preference now is for digital access.

It was confirmed the Library book budgets will be allocated per school as was the case last year.

SECTION D: OTHER ISSUES

10. Any Other Business 10.1 GDPR Martin Ward, Deputy Chief Operations Officer, will provide sessions in early April on Data Protection and Regulations for PhD supervisors. The committee requested a clear definition of what counts as personal data, what if any are the exemptions applied to researchers and clarity on supervisor access to research students’ data. Chair advised that students should contact the Research Convenor if they had any concerns and the convenor could liaise with Noel Prior to seek guidance. It was also noted the GDPR champions in each school are not currently available on the DCU website.

10.2 Digital Repository Ireland (DRI) T. Lokot provided an overview of a recent presentation from DRI regarding its services to store data, deposit data sets and archive data. There are two membership models (i) University membership costs €5k per year but this is not suitable for PIs and (ii) affiliate membership costs €500 per year which has limited functionality and not suitable for the life of research projects. DRI want to form a partnership with DCU and might be a good fit for RIS or the Library.
