Dewhurst S. cont. Like the 2006 champion, J “TDN Rising Star” J New Approach came into the Dewhurst S. unbeaten, most recently taking the G1 National S. at The Curragh. Jim Bolger and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s imposing chestnut had probably done enough in that Sept. 16 contest to ensure prime posi- tion in the rankings, but the promise of this stellar line- up drew him across the Irish Sea. While the opposition seemed certain to ensure more industry from New Approach, there was the distinct feeling after the race that it was the colt=s lack of fizz that had made life difficult. AHe ran very lazy today, but he=d been working a bit that way at home,@ jockey Kevin Manning said. After missing the kick and turning in a lacklustre first half-mile, New Approach was shoved up to challenge the smooth-traveling Raven=s Pass before the quarter pole, but it was not until the final 200 yards that he mastered that rival. He was then threatened out wide by Fast Company and was able to pull out an extra surge to hold that rival at bay. AThis fellow is very tal- ented and tough and hardy,@ Bolger commented. AWe overdid the settling on him today and it nearly cost us the race, but I have had Derbies in mind when training him over the past couple of weeks, and all his work has just been lobbing and loitering. I knew yesterday when he lobbed up the gallop here that he might just be a little bit tardy, but we=ll be able to solve that problem and rev him up for the 2000 Guineas.@ Remarking on the run of Fast Company, trainer Brian Meehan said, AMaybe a little lack of experience told going into the Saturday, Newmarket, Britain dip.
