As the longtime man- Eager of Eminem, Rosenberg has been a substantial player in the unfolding of the ‘‘ modern era and the dominance of hip-hop in the last two decades. His work in that capacity naturally positioned him to seize the reins at the major label that brought rap to the mainstream. Before he began managing the best- selling rapper of all time, Rosenberg was an attorney, hustling in Detroit and New York but always intimately connected with the Detroit rap scene. Later on, he was a boutique-label owner, film producer and, finally, major-label boss. The success he’s had thus far required savvy and finesse, no question. But it’s been Rosenberg’s fearlessness and commitment to breaking barriers that have secured him this high perch. Zboray, Department of Communication ii Copyright © by Carleton S. Gholz 2011 iii “WHERE THE MIX IS PERFECT”: VOICES FROM THE POST-MOTOWN SOUNDSCAPE Carleton S. Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.

DeepLyricist: Automatic Generation of Rap Lyrics using Sequence-to-Sequence Learning Nils Hulzebosch Student ID: 10749411 A thesis presented for the degree of Bachelor Artificial Intelligence 18 ECTS Faculty of Science University of Amsterdam Netherlands July 2, 2017 M.Sc. Mostafa Dehghani Dr. Sander van Splunter University of Amsterdam University of Amsterdam [email protected] [email protected] First supervisor Second supervisor Abstract This thesis demonstrates the use of sequence-to-sequence learning for the automatic generation of novel English rap lyrics, with the goal of generating lyrics with similar qualities to those of humans in terms of rhyme, idiom, structure, and novelty. The sequence-to-sequence model tries to learn the best parameters for generating target sequences given source sequences, and is trained on over 1.6 million source-target pairs, containing lyrics from 348 different rap artists. The automatic evaluations of each of the four characteristics show that idiom and structure have the best performance, whereas rhyme and novelty should be improved to be in a similar range of human lyrics. Future research could focus on using hierarchical models to improve the learning and generation of rhyme, structure, and possibly novelty, and implementing a sampled probability to increase the uniqueness of generated lyrics. 1 Contents Acknowledgements 4 1 Introduction 5 2 Related work 6 3 Characteristics of rap lyrics 7 3.1 Rhyme . .7 3.2 Rhyme schemes . .9 3.3 Song structure . 10 3.4 Idiom . 11 3.5 Novelty . 12 4 Evaluation Methodology 12 4.1 Rhyme . 12 4.1.1 Modified rhyme density . 13 4.1.2 End rhyme score .

8 Reasons Eminem's Popularity is a Disaster for Women By Jackson Katz, Ph.D. "I loved (8 Mile)…probably one of the best movies I've seen in years. And I'm a farm boy from Upstate New York with a weakness for James Taylor…Was Eminem whitewashed, made to be more likable than his reputation as a homophobe, misogynist, an all-around unlikable performer who spews his offensive lyrics across the airwaves? Probably. (emphasis added) But it's a movie of hope…" -- Craig Wilson, USA Today "Put Anthrax on a Tampax and slap you till you can't stand." -- Eminem, "Superman" Love him or loathe him, Eminem is unquestionably an impressive cultural player. He is a multitalented artist: a wildly inventive rap lyricist, a charismatic performer, and now an effective actor (essentially playing a heroicized version of himself). What is in question is the nature of Eminem's art and image, and its significance. One thing is certain: he has been embraced by the cultural mainstream in a way that is unprecedented for a rapper. Obviously this has much (everything?) to do with his whiteness, and critiques of Eminem have typically centered on the racial politics of his initial rise to notoriety and now to the heights of pop cultural fame. But there are other analyses that have only begun to dim the luster of this 21st century legend-in-the- making. For example, one disturbing way to understand Eminem's popularity is that he has achieved success not in spite of his virulent misogyny and homophobic utterances – as many critics allege -- but in part because of them.
