2003 Baseball Media Guide-A 4 MOM On November 15, 2002, a dear member of the LMU Family was taken from us all. A woman who loved God, her family and Lion Baseball left this world after bringing so much joy to others with her warmth, generosity and the way she NarcisaNarcisa AlvarezAlvarez CruzCruz constantly reached others; making them feel a part of the LMU Family. Her bond AugustAugust 23,23, 19261926 -- with the players, staff and many of the parents was the heart and soul of this NovemberNovember 15,15, 20022002 phenomenon. At every game in Page Stadium, this special woman would take her seat just to the right of home plate and cheer on her son’s beloved team. Many would come to games looking forward to seeing her as she was the first to encourage and certainly the first to defend her Lions, win or lose. Mom Cruz, now seated next to our Father, you will be most terribly missed and never ever forgotten. Our hearts and memories will eternally be filled with our love for you. Head Coach Frank Shellenbach’s 1930 team, one of the first to represent the institution, captured 14 games in an original 20- game schedule. Opponents that season included a number of various organized club teams and local junior colleges. LMU defeated USC that season — the USC Dental School to be precise. Exciting players, numerous wins, and yes, even some tough losses, have characterized the competitive Lions’ Baseball program throughout the years. ON TOP OF THE WORLD The 1986 Loyola Marymount University baseball team had the best season in program history. It was also one of the best overall seasons in the history of athletics at LMU. Following a 1985 season in which the Lions did not have a winning record at 27-28, the program performed one of the best turn-arounds ever.
