All-America Coaching Staff Boasts Experience at Both the Collegiate and Pro Levels

ith Chris Mahony and Chris Woodruff at the helm of the Tennessee men’s tennis program, the Volunteers have the rare honor Wof boasting a coaching staff composed of two former Division I-A collegiate All-America performers. As collegians, Tennessee’s talented tandem of acting head coach Mahony and assistant coach Woodruff racked up a combined total of 171 singles wins. The two former Vol greats have proven that they know what it takes to achieve greatness on the collegiate hard courts. But they didn’t stop there. Mahony fought his way to 90 wins — good for 10th-place on Tennessee’s all-time career singles wins list. Amazingly, in only two seasons, Woodruff tallied 81 victories on Rocky Top, including a momentous win over Wade McGuire in 1993 that earned him the title of NCAA singles champion. Both men went on to compete — and win — on the international pro tour. Together they have more than a decade of pro competition experience. Mahony collected a number of wins on tour on his way to earning a top-325 world ranking. Woodruff’s ATP exploits are also well documented. The Knoxville native won singles titles at the 1997 Montreal Super 9 and the 1999 Miller Lite Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. He reached the quarterfinals of the and also upset at the 1996 . Experience and dedication translates into expertise, and Tennessee’s current assemblage of champions-turned-mentors continues to add to the lore and Tennessee men’s tennis coaches Chris Woodruff (left) and tradition that is Volunteers tennis. Chris Mahony (MAH-nee) know what it takes to acheive greatness on the tennis courts.
