He holds a BA which addresses the critical challenges of our Honours with specialisation in History, as well as a time, such as poverty and inequality, climate Master’s degree in Heritage Studies from the change, conflict, decolonisation, migration and University of Zimbabwe. He completed his PhD in social justice. Prof. Mataga joined the university in African Studies with specialisation in Heritage and May 2015. He also holds a certificate in the Scientific Principles of Conservation from ICCROM, Italy. Prof. Mataga has extensive experience in research and training in heritage management on the African continent with substantial experience in museum curation, intangible heritage, cultural diversity and implementation of UNESCO conventions. He worked for the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe and taught in the Archaeology Unit of the University of Zimbabwe and at the National University of Lesotho. His current research, situated in an emerging research focus on critical and decolonial heritage, explores the role and place of communities in heritage management. His work aims to support Photo: Supplied ADMINISTRATOR SUKAYNA OBARAY Ms Sukayna Obaray joined Sol Plaatje University in August 2016 as the faculty administrator for the School of Humanities. She has a varied background in the travel and customer service industries and extensive experience as an administrator within the higher education sector. Ms Obaray quite recently discovered her passion for teaching and is currently completing her Bachelor of Education degree with specialisation in Foundation Phase Teaching through the University of South Africa. She is a die-hard lover of biltong, sushi and travelling adventures and will most likely be the friendly voice that welcomes you when you call the School of Humanities. Early contacts <1> We cannot talk about African Studies in the Czech Republic without first mentioning the preceding tradition of mutual Czech-African relations. The Czech Republic has quite a unique position among other countries of Central or Eastern Europe for its long tradition of travelling to the African interior. Among the first Czech travellers in Africa we have to stress the name of Václav Remedius Prutký, a missionary who visited Ethiopia between 1751-1753 and not only described his travels but also compiled a vocabulary of the Amharic language in his so- far unpublished Vocabularium linguae Gallicae, Arabicae et Abyssiniacae. His travels (Itinerarium, 2005) in Ethiopia and India were translated from Latin and published in English by J.H. Arrowsmith-Brown (1991) under the title Prutky’s Travels in Ethiopia and Other Countries. His contribution to understanding and describing the history and culture of Ethiopia is unquestionable, but the importance of his work was outshined by the Scottish traveller James Bruce’s five-volume work Travels to discover the source of the Nile (1790) that enjoys worldwide renown. Václav Remedius Prutký was a Franciscan missionary, who travelled to Ethiopia from Cairo, but he was not the only one, other Czech missionaries in Ethiopia were Jakub Římař (1682-1755) and Martin Lang. <2> In the 19th century there was a much more important Czech traveller, Dr Emil Holub, whose works are also available in English.

Following extensive consultation with stakeholders in these two provinces, the task teams submitted their reports to the Minister in September 2011, and subsequently to the Council on Higher Education (CHE) for their advice. The Minister of Higher Education decided to proceed with both universities in the conviction that universities are essentially national institutions and that a university in the Northern Cape would attract students from across the country and not only from the school system in the Northern Cape (NUPMT, 2018) In 2007, stimulated by government infrastructure funding, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) embarked upon its first major capital expansion programme in over 20 years. Initially a traditional master-servant approach was pursued, which led to significant cost overruns, the full extent of which was only known months after completion. The client team decided to explore an alternative approach to delivering infrastructure based on long-term, collaborative relationships and early contractor involvement, underpinned by the NEC3 family of contracts. This approach produced a consistently reliable time and cost outcome over the R1,5b infrastructure programme (Laryea and Watermeyer, 2014).

    Past and Present Aspects of Czech Phytogeography and Climatology MILOS SEBOR A. INTRODUCTORY Phytogeography and climatology, two branches of physical geography, are related to every field of nature study, be it botany, pedology, geo- morphology, hydrography, or conservation of resources. The concept of the biotic triangle - an association of weather elements, soils, and vegetation - is a well-established platform for regional-physical inquiries. By the addition of topography we create a general framework for any geographic approach. Plant geography and climatology may be regarded, then, as fields which represent a greater part of nature study. This is true despite the specialization noticeable today in all divisions of human knowledge. Accepting the formula pars pro toto, a glance at plant geopraphy and climatology should suffice to cast some light, not only on the two selected disciplines, but on the whole body of natural sciences of a nation.1 The second objective of the present article is specific.     HERITAGE, FORGOTTEN ANC celebrates history while Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s Brandfort home still languishes in obscurity By Rebecca Davis• 13 January 2020 The newly refurbished house of late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in Brandfort, Free State during a visit on Sunday 12 January. The refurbishment of the house, which is meant to be turned into a heritage site, began in 2005 — 15 years later it remains unfinished. (Photo: Ayanda Mthethwa) For the past 15 years, the ANC government has been promising that the house to which Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was banished in the Free State will become a heritage site. In December 2019, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthetwa announced that the museum was complete — but in reality, it is nowhere near opening its doors to visitors. The ANC’s 108th birthday celebrations have been a time for the party to commemorate its history and the freedom fighters it claims as its own. One of the week-long series of events saw President Cyril Ramaphosa lay a wreath at the Kimberley gravesite of the ANC’s first secretary- general, Sol Plaatje. But just 90 minutes’ drive away, the site which the Department of Arts and Culture has hailed as one of South Africa’s “prized national assets” received no such acknowledgement. This is 902 Mothupi Street in Majwamasweu Township, Brandfort: the address to which Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was banished by the apartheid government for almost a decade in 1977. The structure of the clinic that was bombed by apartheid police will also form part of the heritage site.
