The University of Texas at Austin, 2004 Supervisor: Katherine Arens This dissertation tests Benedict Anderson’s thesis about the coherence of imagined communities by tracing how Galicia, as the heart of a Polish culture in the nineteenth century that would never be an independent nation state, emerged as an historical, cultural touchstone with present day significance for the people of Europe. After the three Partitions and Poland’s complete disappearance from political maps of Europe, substitute images of Poland were sought that could replace its lost kingdom with alternate forms of national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. Not the hereditary dynasty, not Prussia or Russia, but Galicia emerged as the imagined and representative center of a Polish culture without a state. This dissertation juxtaposes political realities with canonical literary texts that provide images of a cultural community among ethnic Germans and Poles sharing the border of Europe. -

US-China Foreign Language, January 2016, Vol. 14, No. 1, 57-71 doi:10.17265/1539-8080/2016.01.009 D DAVID PUBLISHING Fear and Love in film The Loop by Wojciech Jerzy Has∗ Iwona Grodź Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland The topic of the paper is The Loop (Pętla, 1956), the first feature film by Wojciech Jerzy Has, a well-known director from the so-called “Polish film school”. The film is based on a story by Marek Hłasko, the author of an internationally known collection of stories A Pretty Girl and a novel Owl, the Baker’s Daughter. The Loop is a story of Kuba, an alcoholic who is making his last attempt to get over his addiction. The viewers see one day of his life. In Has’s adaptation the main protagonist is not simply a drunk, he is someone who cannot come to terms with the new reality—in the world of appearances, falsehood, during the so-called “small stabilisation”. Thoroughly analysed will be Kuba’s romantic relations with two women: a former love and his present fiancée who is trying to liberate him not only from the world, but primarily from himself. Love and fear are the two feelings that characterise the emotional state of the film’s main protagonist. Important will also be the perception of The Loop’s protagonist as everyman, i.e., someone who could be everybody and nobody at the same time; someone who wishes to finally break up with the past, but is too tightly attached to it. His relations with a group of former friends, his relationship with the city prevent him from escaping. -

The aim of the study was to compare largely unpublished 19th century sources with more contemporary data on the use of wild food plants. Methods: The information on 19th century uses is based on twelve, mainly unpublished, responses to Józef Rostafiński’s questionnaire from 1883, and the newly discovered materials of the ethnographer Michał Federowski, who structured his data according to Rostafiński’s questionnaire and documented it with voucher specimens. Rostafiński’s questionnaire was concerned mainly with Polish territories, but for historical reasons this also encompassed a large part of Belarus, and we analyzed only the twelve responses (out of the few hundred Rostafiński obtained), which concerned the present Belarus. These data were compared with a few 20th century ethnographic sources, and our own 40 interviews and questionnaires from Belarus. Results and discussion: 58 taxa of wild food plants used in the 19th century were identified. Some of them are still used in modern Belarus, others are probably completely forgotten. -

XI, 230 pp. n Slavic studies abroad, research on Belarusian literature is rare, and a monograph Ian event. This slender book evolved from Simon Lewis’s doctoral dissertation, sub- mitted at Cambridge University in 2014. It is a thorough study on the negotiations of nation and memory, with cosmopolitanism as a key word for the ‘alternative visions’ of the Belarus(ian) past, in which the author is interested most. The book concentrates on the second half of the 20th century and the post-Soviet period. As the first chapter offers an overview from ca. 1800, it doubles as an excellent introduction into modern Belarusian literature in general. The book must be praised particularly in this respect for its brevity and conciseness that completely differs from the multi-volume cumulati- ve histories of BelarusianUMCS literature published in Miensk, and from Arnold McMillin’s encyclopaedic publications over the last decades. The six chapters, as well as the end- notes that follow each of them, prove the author’s broad and thorough knowledge not only of the Belarusian classics, but also of Russian and Polish literature. -

Paulina Kwiatkowska Panoptikum 2020, 23:63-76 https://doi.org/10.26881/pan.2020.23.05 Paulina Kwiatkowska University of Warsaw Zofia Dwornik: Becoming a Female Film Editor In this article I intend to recall and shortly present the figure of Zofia Dwornik, one of the most appreciated and nowadays rather forgotten female film editors of post-war communist Poland. Born in 1922 and deceased in 2002, Dwornik cooperated, for the twenty-five years of her creative activity, in the production of more than thirty films with the most prominent directors of the Polish cinema in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. She co-created, among others, films of Jerzy Kawalerowicz (Pod gwiazdą frygijską [Under the Phrygian Star], 1954 – her independent debut as a film editor), Andrzej Munk (Pasażerka [The Passenger], 1963 – she joined the film crew after director’s death), Krzysztof Zanussi (Struk- tura kryształu [The Structure of Crystals], 1969), Grzegorz Królikiewicz (Na wylot [Through and Through], 1972), Andrzej Wajda (Ziemia obiecana [The Promised Land], 1974 – together with Halina Prugar), Witold Leszczyński (Rekolekcje [The Retreat], 1977) and Tomasz Zygadło (Rebus [The Rebus], 1977 – her last film). The longest, however, was her cooperation with Wojciech Jerzy Has, with whom she finished Film Education Course in Cracow already in 1946. Abstract The actualization of the epoch and personality of the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania Stefan Batory took place in modern Belarus on the wave of growing scientific and public interest in the political history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth, neglected in Soviet times. The historical memory of him is most firmly established in theUMCS Grodno region and has a 100-year tradition. The article substantiates the reason for this phenomenon – first of all, the city of Grodno owes its worthy status of being a royal city as well as its high historical image to Batory. The ‘places of memory’ left by Batory in Grodno and their European significance are shown: the Old Castle is the only remaining royal castle in Belarus (except the New Castle), in the 1930s it was supposed to be transformed into the ‘Wawel over the Neman’, an analogue of Krakow Wawel; ‘Batoryevka’, known in the history of European medicine (the resting site of the body of Batory); the Vytautas Fara, the most famous Belarusian church destroyed by the communist authorities, which became a symbol of Grodno. -
Fischer's Plants in Folk Beliefs and Customs: a Previously Unknown

Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2017) 13:20 DOI 10.1186/s13002-017-0149-8 RESEARCH Open Access Fischer’s Plants in folk beliefs and customs:a previously unknown contribution to the ethnobotany of the Polish-Lithuanian- Belarusian borderland Monika Kujawska1*, Piotr Klepacki2 and Łukasz Łuczaj3 Abstract Background: Historical ethnobotanical studies are useful starting points for further diachronic analysis. The aim of this contribution is to present archival data from the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian borderland, which were collected by Adam Fischer, a Polish ethnographer from Lviv, in the 1930s. These data were originally gathered for publication in the first part of the Lexicon of Slavic beliefs and customs, dedicated to plant uses in traditional Slavonic culture. It was intended to be a joint international enterprise, but was never actually fulfilled. Methods: In this article we used information from historical Lithuania (the Great Duchy of Lithuania), nowadays a border region between Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. We applied cultural importance indices such as Use Value, Relative Importance value and Sørensen similarity coefficient, in order to compare our data with a western Ukraine data set from the same research framework. Results: In total, 153 plant taxa were registered as used in peasant culture in the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian borderland in the 1930s. The species which achieved the highest Use Values were: Calendula officinalis, Cyanus segetum, Helichrysum arenarium, Betula sp., Prunella vulgaris, and Nuphar lutea or Lilium sp. The most salient use categories were medicinal, followed by food and home garden plants. The overall similarity to plants recorded in western Ukraine within the same project of Fischer’s is quite low (46%), which may be explained by the partly different flora found in the regions, and a cultural discontinuity, revealed by the difference in species with the highest UV. -
A Note on Eliza Orzeszkowa
A Note on Eliza Orzeszkowa Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841–1910) is one of the most prolific and esteemed Polish prose writers of the nineteenth century. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 together with Leo Tolstoy and Henryk Sienkiewicz, who became the recipient of the prestigious award. Orzeszkowa began her writing career with her short story “Obrazek z lat głodnych” (A picture from the hungry years), published by the literary magazine Tygod- nik ilustrowany (The illustrated weekly) in 1866. She wrote novels, short stories, and a series of articles and commentaries on education, class dis- crimination, anti-Semitism, and women’s emancipation, all within the frame of Polish literary Positivism. Orzeszkowa achieved widespread fame at home and abroad with her famous roman-fleuve Nad Niemnem (On the banks of the Niemen, 1888), which dealt with traditional values of the Polish gentry, issues centering around marriage between members of different classes, and the effects of the January Uprising in Russian-occupied Poland. Throughout her lifetime Orzeszkowa fought for her personal independence by working as a writer; as a teacher at her house in Grodno, which she made available for girls who wanted to pursue their studies under her guidance; and as manager of her own bookstore, which was transformed into a publishing house in Wilno. Her novel Marta (1873) presents a widowed heroine facing a grim battle to earn a living in a time when employment opportunities for women were severely restricted; the book is representative of Orzeszkowa’s depiction of women and her skill at creating moving and powerful scenes in her fiction. -

Honorary Members Since its founding in 1898, the Polish Women’s Alliance of America has opened its doors and its heart to many people from all walks of life. Some of them were celebrated and many of them were women - writers, poets, artists, scientists, educators, social workers, members of religious orders, business leaders, journalists, and politicians. Relationships with Polish women who were activists and patriots, dedicated to changing the world and helping the disadvantaged, were especially meaningful. Their work brought them in contact with members of the PWA who were inspired to offer help and solidarity. To honor special bonds of friendship and a commitment to shared causes, the PWA National Board has, since 1903, extended Honorary Membership to nine internationally renowned women: • Maria Konopnicka, poet and author • Eliza Orzeszkowa, author • Helena Modrzejewska, actress • Helena Paderewska, humanitarian • Marie Sklodowska Curie, scientist • Maria Rodziewiczowna, author • Helena Sikorska, social activist • Barbara Mikulski, U.S. Senator • Irena Sendler, social worker These nine women were honored for their courage, integrity, and achievement. Their lives narrate the story of the empowerment of Polish women in the 20th century—from a writer who had only the power of her pen to act against the tyranny of an occupier to a U.S. Senator elected to the highest level of democratic government; from an internationally acclaimed scientist who was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize to a young social worker secretly saving the lives of children in the dark alleys of the Warsaw Ghetto. The lives of the Honorary Members exemplify the motto of the PWA, “The ideals of a woman are the strength of a nation.” Maria Konopnicka (1842–1910) Maria Konopnicka was a poet, novelist, translator, and essayist.
