  • Origins of the Cambridge Blue
    ORIGINS OF THE CAMBRIDGE BLUE Improved communications in the early years of the 19th century made possible sporting competitions between such as Oxford and Cambridge, which led in turn to the adoption of different colours, if only to allow the umpire to recognise them. The first sporting competition between the universities was on June 4th 1827 in a cricket match at Lord’s. Both teams wore white with no distinguishing colour. The second competition was the first Boat Race at Henley-on-Thames on 10th June 1829 when Oxford wore dark blue and white striped shirts. The colour was in honour of Christ Church, Head of the River at the time, who provided no fewer than five members of the crew. It is well documented that this race is the origin of the Oxford dark blue. Cambridge wore white shirts with hunting pink ties or sashes in honour of Snow, the Captain of Cambridge and of the Lady Margaret (St John’s College) Boat Club. For the second race in 1836, according to contemporary accounts (e.g. Bell’s Life), Cambridge wore white with no adornment. In 1837 and 1838 there were no intervarsity boat races but Cambridge raced against Leander Club and in both races they wore light blue and white striped shirts. For the third Boat Race in 1839 they adopted light blue, thereby establishing the accepted CUBC colour, and serially the Cambridge colour as each new sport has entered the intervarsity competitive programme. The story behind the adoption of light blue did not appear in print until 1881, almost half a century after the event.

    PETREAN NEWS AUTUMN 2007 By Ann Munro, Development Officer Welcome to the Autumn 2007 edition of Petrean News. Another Summer is almost over – courtesy of our ‘great’ British weather, one I’m sure we’ll remember for a long time. I think we were destined for poor weather when this year’s Peterhouse Society Gathering took place in a constant drizzle, although this certainly didn’t appear to dampen your spirits, and once again the Gathering was well-attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Pictured below, sheltering from the rain, are Mr Roger Cohen (matric. 1970), pictured with his wife Lauren Cohen-Harvey and daughter Jessica. The Cohen-Harveys have been to almost every Gathering, since 2001. More on the Gathering follows later. Ann Munro Sadly, Alison Holroyd left the Development Office this Summer to take up a post at Homerton College, but we are pleased to welcome Angela Reeves, formerly of King’s College, who started with us in mid-July. Angela has very quickly taken to her new role, and she is already beginning to prove a real asset to the Office. So far this year we have been very lucky with the weather and are enjoying a wonderful Spring, which makes life in Peterhouse even more enjoyable than usual, as the picture below of students relaxing in the Deer Park on a Sunday afternoon shows. Ed Barker (matric. 2013) On another very positive note, we are delighted to announce that, thanks to the generosity of many Petreans we were successful in purchasing for the College, an important collection of papers associated with Frank Whittle. Frank Whittle was working on the jet engine while at Peterhouse and the College is overjoyed to have this collection of papers to add to the College’s growing modern archive. We will be holding a small exhibition of the papers in the Ward Library at this year’s annual Gathering on 28 June and again at the Garden Party on 21 September. For coaches, learning from experience is vital in a role that is a complex, dynamic and multifaceted process of balancing fun and winning where one cannot be sure if results will go according to plan. At the Olympic level, due to commercialization more money is being spent than ever before on developing more professional and effective training systems to maximize athletic performances. Medals won determine how a coach is evaluated and with more nations competition at a higher level, success is becoming even more competitive. More qualified and adaptable coaches are required to cope with the demands of international competition. The literature has been extensively examined based on the research question: to what extent is coaching success predicted by a coaches’ ability to self-reflect on past experiences? The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that if coaches who are highly self- reflective and have successful athletic and coaching experiences would be more likely to have future coaching success than those who either were not self-reflective or had less success in the past.

    PETREAN NEWS SPRING 2012 By Ann Munro, Development Officer Welcome to a ‘soggy’ Spring 2012 edition of Petrean News. We apologise to members who have patiently been waiting for the new register to come on-line, and we hope that this won’t be too much longer. If there is someone that you are trying to contact, please get in touch, we will be happy to contact them on your behalf. On a positive note, the ‘Family Garden Party’ is now fully booked. We are delighted that this has proved popular and very much look forward to welcoming you and your family to this event. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good weather! On a further positive note, and as you are probably already aware, the go-ahead for the new building in Gisborne Court has now been given. The building will named The Whittle Building. Pipe work as part of the diversion of the heating and hot water supplies to the old parts of the College, and the diversion of cold water mains, fire hydrant and power supplies to K and L staircases have already taken place and major work will begin in earnest in August. The wall will be taken down to allow access into the site and this will be followed by the dismantling of the Birdwood Building. We are hoping to have a webcam installed which will keep you informed every step of the way. The picture below shows the rear of Gisborne Court, taken from the Doubletree Hilton Hotel.
