The Near-Death Experience: an Ancient Truth, a Modern Mystery
Guest Editorial The Near-Death Experience: An Ancient Truth, A Modern Mystery Elizabeth W. Fenske, Ph.D. International Association for Near-Death Studies ABSTRACT: The near-death experience (NDE), as an experience of whole ness, an adventure in consciousness, and a metaphoric encounter with light, links theoretical physics with the occult, the Primordial Tradition, and various religious belief systems. Light as image, vehicle, and first cause ties the NDE to mystical experience. Where science sees mystery, religion sees metaphoric truth; the NDE as spiritual quest and physical encounter beckons to both disciplines for explanation. In any keynote address, one is caught between the desire to be all things to all people -truly to set the stage for all that follows- and the desire to raise issues that can be explored at greater depth not only while we are here together, but also in the future. If I have chosen either of these directions, it is probably the latter, because I believe the near-death experience (NDE) is part of a larger picture, one that is of enormous importance to each of us. We come from many walks of life, with differing interests and needs; yet, all of us are concerned with the subject of the near-death experi Dr. Fenske is President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and is engaged in the private practice of psychotherapy and the integration of psychology and religion. This paper is a revised version of her keynote lecture presented at the Interna tional Association for Near-Death Studies First Annual Conference, Rosemont, PA, June 1989. -

The International Dark-Sky Association has recently estimated that the energy expended on light scatter alone is responsible for no less than twelve million tons of carbon dioxide and costs municipal governments at least $1 billion annually (“Economic Issues” 2). -

Stellar Luminosity Functions of Rich Star Clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud
A&A 369, 74–86 (2001) Astronomy DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20010004 & c ESO 2001 Astrophysics Stellar luminosity functions of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud B. Santiago1, S. We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10 000 stars. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also obtain luminosity functions, Φ(MV ), down to MV ' 6(M/M ∼> 0.9), and investigate their dependence with distance from the cluster centre well beyond their half-light radius. In all clusters we find a systematic increase in the luminosity functions slope, ∆logΦ(MV )/∆(MV ), with radial distance from the centre. Among the clusters displaying significant mass seg- regation are the 2 youngest in the sample: NGC 1805, NGC 1818. For these two clusters we obtain present day mass functions. The NGC 1818 mass function is in excellent agreement with that derived by other authors, also using HST data. The young cluster mass function slopes differ, that of NGC 1805 being systematically steeper than NGC 1818. Since these are very young stellar systems (τ ∼< 40 Myrs), these variations may reflect the initial conditions rather than evolution due to internal dynamics. -

Since the late 1980s, Korean pop music has aspired to be a more advanced industry and establish an international presence, based on the economic leap and democratization as a springboard. Contemporary K-pop, originating from the underground dance scene in the 1980s, succeeded in transforming Korean pop music into a modern and youth-oriented genre with a new style dubbed "rap/dance music." The rise of dance music changed the landscape of Korean popular music and became the cornerstone of the K-pop idol music. In the era of globalization, K-pop’s unique aesthetics and strategy, later termed “Cultural Technology,” achieved substantial returns in the international market. Throughout this evolution, Korean Americans were vital players who brought K-pop closer to its mission of modern and international pop music. In the age of globalization, K-pop's modernity and identity are evolving in a new way. -

MIND and MAN by MARTHA WILCOX
MIND AND MAN by MARTHA WILCOX "Though Empires Fall, the Lord shall reign forever." The Kingdom of Heaven a Present Reality When Mary Baker Eddy revealed Mind as God, therefore one, she revealed that the act of creating is an act or function of Mind. Since Mind is the Mind of all men, creation as thought is the individual experience of each one, and the act of creating as the function of Mind is the individual experience of each one. The mind of Mind's manifestation, man, would necessarily have to be Mind. A true thinker is one who thinks from this standpoint of the one Mind. This correct thinking naturally brings about the disappearance of the belief that mind is human or mortal. Such thinkers do not think the truth about creation, but they think the Truth itself, and this is creation or revelation -- Mind's self-revealingness. This is the creation which is ever appearing fresh, new, original. Human sense, which is ignorant of God, misinterprets the substance and tangibility of this revelation which is creation, and calls it matter. This ignorance of God is entirely supposition; and so any change which seems to take place in our world is simply in the appearance of things, since there could be no change in the reality; and what appears as change is a thinning of the mist of ignorance and a clearer vision of Truth -- error disappearing and Truth, to that extent, appearing. It is the province of the Christian Scientist to decide what the activity is which apparently confronts him. -
