The Lost Princess of Oz By L. Frank Baum THE LOST PRINCESS CHAPTER 1 A TERRIBLE LOSS There could be no doubt of the fact: Princess Ozma, the lovely girl ruler of the Fairyland of Oz, was lost. She had completely disappeared. Not one of her subjects—not even her closest friends—knew what had become of her. It was Dorothy who first discovered it. Dorothy was a little Kansas girl who had come to the Land of Oz to live and had been given a delightful suite of rooms in Ozma's royal palace just because Ozma loved Dorothy and wanted her to live as near her as possible so the two girls might be much together. Dorothy was not the only girl from the outside world who had been welcomed to Oz and lived in the royal palace. There was another named Betsy Bobbin, whose adventures had led her to seek refuge with Ozma, and still another named Trot, who had been invited, together with her faithful companion Cap'n Bill, to make her home in this wonderful fairyland. The three girls all had rooms in the palace and were great chums; but Dorothy was the dearest friend of their gracious Ruler and only she at any hour dared to seek Ozma in her royal apartments. For Dorothy had lived in Oz much longer than the other girls and had been made a Princess of the realm. Betsy was a year older than Dorothy and Trot was a year younger, yet the three were near enough of an age to become great playmates and to have nice times together. -

Whoah! TIP (V.O.) Taming the Sawhorse now it was alive was proving ... tricky. When Jack came to life, he was full of questions and kinda stupid, but he was fairly calm, all things considered. The Sawhorse was frightened. And a little bit insane. JACK PUMPKINHEAD Calm down horsey! TIP Whoah, horse. Easy there boy -- look out Jack, it's coming through! JACK PUMPKINHEAD Whoooah! He leaps out of the way as the horse bounds past him. TIP Come on, there's nothing to be scared of. JACK PUMPKINHEAD I'm scared! TIP Nothing for the Sawhorse to be scared of. (to Sawhorse) We're your friends we're not going to hurt -- ahhh! He jumps aside as it rushes through. 45. JACK PUMPKINHEAD At least it's knocking you over as well as me, Dad. TIP I don't understand, why won't it listen to us? JACK PUMPKINHEAD Maybe it can't listen to us? TIP Oh? Oh, of course, that's it! Jack, find me some leaves or something. (he starts rummaging in the undergrowth) Big ones, about the size of my hand. We need two. JACK PUMPKINHEAD Why? TIP (finding leaves) Here we are, perfect. Ears, Jack! The Sawhorse doesn't have ears! JACK PUMPKINHEAD That's why he isn't listening! TIP We just need to fasten these on to his head and sprinkle a little more powder on. -

THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ by L. FRANK BAUM Affectionately Dedicated to my young friend Sumner Hamilton Britton of Chicago Prologue Through the kindness of Dorothy Gale of Kansas, afterward Princess Dorothy of Oz, an humble writer in the United States of America was once appointed Royal Historian of Oz, with the privilege of writing the chronicle of that wonderful fairyland. But after making six books about the adventures of those interesting but queer people who live in the Land of Oz, the Historian learned with sorrow that by an edict of the Supreme Ruler, Ozma of Oz, her country would thereafter be rendered invisible to all who lived outside its borders and that all communication with Oz would, in the future, be cut off. The children who had learned to look for the books about Oz and who loved the stories about the gay and happy people inhabiting that favored country, were as sorry as their Historian that there would be no more books of Oz stories. They wrote many letters asking if the Historian did not know of some adventures to write about that had happened before the Land of Oz was shut out from all the rest of the world. But he did not know of any. Finally one of the children inquired why we couldn’t hear from Princess Dorothy by wireless telegraph, which would enable her to communicate to the Historian whatever happened in the far-off Land of Oz without his seeing her, or even knowing just where Oz is. That seemed a good idea; so the Historian rigged up a high tower in his back yard, and took lessons in wireless telegraphy until he understood it, and then began to call “Princess Dorothy of Oz” by sending messages into the air. -

Chapter Seven Polychrome's Pitiful Plight The Rain King got too much water in his basin and spilled some over the brim. That made it rain in a certain part of the country--a real hard shower, for a time--and sent the Rainbow scampering to the place to show the gorgeous colors of his glorious bow as soon as the mist of rain had passed and the sky was clear. The coming of the Rainbow is always a joyous event to earth folk, yet few have ever seen it close by. Usually the Rainbow is so far distant that you can observe its splendid hues but dimly, and that is why we seldom catch sight of the dancing Daughters of the Rainbow. In the barren country where the rain had just fallen there appeared to be no human beings at all; but the Rainbow appeared, just the same, and dancing gayly upon its arch were the Rainbow's Daughters, led by the fairylike Polychrome, who is so dainty and beautiful that no girl has ever quite equalled her in loveliness. Polychrome was in a merry mood and danced down the arch of the bow to the ground, daring her sisters to follow her. Laughing and gleeful, they also touched the ground with their twinkling feet; but all the Daughters of the Rainbow knew that this was a dangerous pastime, so 53 they quickly climbed upon their bow again. All but Polychrome. Though the sweetest and merriest of them all, she was likewise the most reckless. Moreover, it was an unusual sensation to pat the cold, damp earth with her rosy toes. -

Ozma begs her old friend Dorothy to take the mechanical man Tik Tok and rescue the Wizard. But the journey will be long and perilous, and Ruggedo.s powers are very strong. Nevertheless, Dorothy will do anything to save her old friend. Along the way, Dorothy and Tik Tok meet Queen Ann.s bungling army, the tail end of a rainbow who.s lost her sisters, a delicate Princess Rose, and a prospector from Colorado who.s looking for his brother. They all decide to find the Wizard, who might be able to solve each of their problems. -

Frank Baum L. Frank statues. Ojo is joined by the patchwork girl Scraps, Dorothy, Dr. Pipt's Glass Cat, the Woozy, the Shaggy Man, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. They eventually visit the Emerald City to ask for help from the Wizard of Oz. "THE PATCHWORK GIRL OF OZ" - CAST LIST PATCHES- Patchwork doll come to life, made from a crazy quilt of fabric. Good physical comedienne. Brutally honest, brave and funny. Any age, 10+. OJO the Unlucky- Actress age 11 to a young looking 20ish female. The Sorceress's hard working Munchkin servant and orphan. Not totally sure of herself yet. But fiercely loyal and determined. Patches' best friend and main focus of the story. MOMBI- Wicked Witch of the North. Glinda's enemy. Devious, sly, dazzling. She has raised Ojo from a baby, and made her into her hardworking serving girl. Practicing forbidden magical arts against Glinda's dictates. LOTTIE LOOKSEE - Mombi's cook who's been like a mother to Ojo Jolly, fun, maternal. (Can double as chorus member). DOROTHY SCARECROW TINMAN GLINDA COWARDLY LION THE NOME KING - The Metal Monarch of the Underworld. Egotistical, funny, throws temper tantrums if he doesn't get his way. Easily bored and amused by tossing stones at people or throwing trespassers down mine shafts. KALIKO - King's long suffering Nome captain. Spends most of his days dodging rocks and staying clear of mine shafts. H.M. WOOGLEBUG - A large bug who fancies himself educated since he lives in a classroom. H.M. stands for Highly Magnified. He was magnified in a microscope and stayed that way. Dresses like an English professor and uses big words. Wears glasses and often has a spare pair perched on his head. POLYCHROME or POLY - The Rainbow's daughter. Appears as a rainbow colored twinkly light half of the time. -

Please send reports of such problems to [email protected]. NEVER having read the Oz books as a child, I recently picked them up and began the 14-book journey through L. Frank Baum's queer country wondering what all the fuss was about. Because there is, of course, a fuss. An enormous, frenzied fuss that has existed since the first Oz book appeared 85 years ago. Pinch-lipped librarians patrolling their domains in a mysterious national campaign against scarecrows and tin men; novelists and distinguished academics combing the Oz texts for echoes of Hawthorne and Stephen Crane; 26 more sequels by six writers; collectors auctioning off scraps of Ozabilia; an International Wizard of Oz Club with thousands of members; a new movie, ''Return to Oz,'' and most important, I suppose, all these people, adult people, sitting around daydreaming of the times they sat around daydreaming, as children, looking up from yellowed pages describing the wonderful Land of Oz. I suspect I would have hated the Oz books as a child, having preferred heroic collies. And it is probably an indication of my lingering antifantasy prejudice that my favorite passages in all the Oz books are the very first: ''Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. -
