Prakash Purb Guru Granth Sahib Ji (1st September 2019) 2 Punjab Advance August 2016 Editorial "Surprised on the exclusion of Punjab from the list of states to be visited by the Inter-Min - isterial Central Team to assess losses in flood-affected areas in different States. Request HM @AmitShah ji to direct the Central Team to visit Punjab to assess the huge losses," This tweet by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh sent the officials of the Union Min - istry concerned into a huddle. Yes, the state that had been feeding the nation for the last 70 years, had been surprisingly, but conveniently, ignored while preparing a list of flood- hit states entitled to special Central assistance. The Centre was quick to amend the order, saying the Centre will be sending a team to Punjab to assess the damage due to the recent floods in several parts of the state. The amended announcement came barely a couple of hours after Capt Amarinder Singh’s tweet, protestinig against the state being left out from the list of states identified for on- the-spot assessment of the flood situation by an inter-ministerial central team (IMCT). As per the original order the IMCT had been mandated to visit the flood affected states of Meghalya, Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala, for making final recommendations to the central government for allocation of special assistance. The Central team ignoring Punjab was all the more surprising, as the state Chief Minister had already written to the Prime Minister seeking a special flood relief package of Rs 1,000 crore to deal with the losses resulting from the floods. It is estimated, that the state has suffered losses worth Rs 2000 crore due to the floods. Flooding in the Sutlej due to the discharge of water from Bhakra dam, the heaviest since 1988, had caused extensive damage to the standing crops and inundated residential areas in the villages. The state health department is providing healthcare and treatment serv - ices through toll free number 104 in the flood affected areas of the state. The civil sur - geons have been instructed to take immediate action to control any epidemic that may spread in the wake of the floods. Pakistan added to the woes of the state by polluting the Sutlej with waters from the tanneries. With the IMCT team assessing the damage, the state is bearing the expenses to provide relief to the flood-hit. The special relief ball is now in the Centre’s court.
