Spatial Modeling of Archaeological Landscapes with Uav and Digital Photogrammetry
Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Space Research and Technology Institute. Aerospace Research in Bulgaria. 32, 2020, Sofia DOI: https://doi.org/10.3897/arb.v32.e04 SPATIAL MODELING OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL LANDSCAPES WITH UAV AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY Jordan Tzvetkov Space Research and Technology Institute – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences e-mail: [email protected] Key worlds: Archaeology, Landscape, UAV, Modeling, Digital Photogrammetry Abstract The aim of this article is to present the results of spatial (2D and 3D) modeling of selected archaeological landscapes (Kaliakra, Chirakman, Provadia-Solnitsata, Debelt-Deultum, Halka Bunar) which was part of the project “Archaeological map of Bulgaria” during 2017 – 2018. To create these spatial models we used aerial (UAV) photography and digital photogrammetry. The main goal of this research was to prove the potential of UAV deployment of creating low-cost spatial models for archaeological tasks. Introduction Since archaeological excavation is a destructive process it’s crucial scientific task to accurately document the entire process. One of the most important techniques for documenting is photographing the archaeological sites [1]. But along with ground photography aerial perspective is also very valuable so aerial photography and aerial reconnaissance started to be part of documenting the archaeological landscapes. This lead to develop new scientific branches like aerial archaeology and to distinguish new landscape features (crop marks, soil marks, shadow marks etc.) used to find new archaeological sites [2]. Modern technological development enriches this field with new methods for archaeological research like: satellite images; unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also known as unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) or just drones; airborne laser scanning (LiDAR); digital photogrammetry; geographical information systems (GIS) [3–7]. -

Regional Disparities in Bulgaria Today: Economic, Social, and Demographic Challenges
REGIONAL DISPARITIES IN BULGARIA TODAY: ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGES Sylvia S. Zarkova, PhD Student1 D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics – Svishtov, Department of Finance and Credit Abstract: To accelerate Bulgaria's economic development taking into account the specific characteristics of their regions is a serious challenge for the local governments in the country. The ongoing political and economic changes require a reassessment of the country's economic development. The aim of this study was to analyse the disparities among Bulgaria’s regions (de- fined in accordance with the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS)) by assessing the degree of economic, social and demographic chal- lenges they face and performing a multivariate comparative analysis with sets of statistically significant indicators. The analysis clearly outlines the bounda- ries of the regional disparities and the need to improve the country’s regional and cohesion policies. Key words: regional policy, differences, NUTS, taxonomic develop- ment measure. (Embiidina, Dermaptera, Isoptera) from the Balkans
Opusc. Zool. Budapest, 2013, 44 (suppl. 1): 167–186 Data to three insect orders (Embiidina, Dermaptera, Isoptera) from the Balkans D. MURÁNYI Dr. Dávid Murányi, Department of Zoology, Hungarian Natural History Museum, H-1088 Budapest, Baross u. 13, Hungary. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The Embiidina, Dermaptera and Isoptera material, collected in the Balkans by the soil zoological expeditions of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2002 and 2012, is enumerated and depicted on maps. New country records of six earwig species are reported: Chelidurella s.l. acanthopygia (Gené, 1832) from Montenegro, Anechura bipunctata (Fabricius, 1781) from Albania, Apterygida media (Hagenbach, 1822) from Montenegro and Macedonia, Guanchia obtusangula (Krauss, 1904) from Macedonia, Forficula aetolica Brunner, 1882 from Bulgaria and Forficula smyrnensis Serville, 1839 from Montenegro and Macedonia. Populations of Chelidurella Verhoeff, 1902 from Dalmatian Croatia and Montenegro probably belong to two undescribed taxa, but these are threated as C. s.l. acanthopygia herein and their morphological features are showed on figures. Due to its rarity in the Balkans, taxonomical features of the Macedonian Guanchia obtusangula specimen are also showed on figures. The webspinner Haploembia palaui Stefani, 1955 is reported from Crete for the first time, which represents the second occurrence in the Balkans. The order Isoptera is reported from Montenegro and the Aegean Isles for the first time, while Reticulitermes balkanensis Clément, 2001 is considered as a nomen nudum. Keywords. Earwings, Embioptera, Embiodea, webspinners, termites, new records INTRODUCTION Being less striking in appearance, and of whole lifecycle hided beneath stones and logs, we espite their conspiciuous appearance, fre- have even fewer data on the not so frequent Bal- D quency, low species number and easy identi- kanic webspinners (Embiidina). -

DOI: 10.17234/RadoviZHP.51.1 Demographic and Ethno-Religious Change in 15th- and 16th-Century Ottoman Dobrudja (NE Balkans) and the Related Impact of Migrations This essay examines the main aspects of demographic and ethno-religious change in Ottoman Dobrudja (NE Balkans) from the Ottoman conquest in the late 14th century till the late 16th century. Paying due attention to Dobrudja’s pre-Ottoman historical legacy, and utilizing an array of narrative and administrative sources, the essay dis- cusses Dobrudja’s turbulent political history during the 15th century, which led to the continuation of negative demographic trends that had developed in the pre-Ottoman centuries, such as outward migrations and demographic losses due to armed conflicts. The political stabilization of Dobrudja in the late 15th century led to a marked change in demographic trends, whereby from the late 15th and throughout the 16th century, Dobrudja became the venue of inward migrations of Turcomans from Anatolia and Thrace and of Christians from other parts of the Balkans. The demographic growth and stabilization of Dobrudja in the 16th century is the subject of the second half of the essay, based on Ottoman tax registers and the attendant law-codes. Introduction This essay takes up the task to discuss the demographic and ethno-religious development of the Balkan Peninsula’s extreme northeast—the predominantly steppe land region of Dobrudja—during the first two centuries of Ottoman rule (i.e.
