  • “The Smartest Man in Football” Explains the Game
[FALL 2014] “THE SMARTEST MAN IN FOOTBALL” EXPLAINS THE GAME The Game Plan The Art of Building a Winning Football Team BILL POLIAN WITH VIC CARUCCI FOREWORD BY PEYTON MANNING As one of the most successful general managers and team presidents in NFL history, few people understand how to create a winning football team like Bill Polian, and in The Game Plan he shares that blueprint with readers. After building the Buffalo Bills team that went to four consecutive Super Bowls and taking the expansion Carolina Panthers to the NFC Championship Game just two years after the team’s creation, he was responsible for the Indianapolis Colts drafting Peyton Manning with the first overall pick in 1998, and oversaw the team’s victory in Super Bowl XLI. Now, Polian shares the lessons he’s learned in his almost 40 years in professional football. In The Game Plan, Polian details both the decisions a team needs to make in the regular season and the off-season to bring teams to the postseason, as well as the NFL’s ultimate test of a well-built team: the Super Bowl. Bill Polian and Vic Carucci take readers inside the front offices of the NFL with in-depth explorations of what a GM looks for in a coach, how teams address the draft and free agency, as well as the way philosophy, teaching, and perseverance come together to form a championship game plan. • Features in publications such as ESPN SPORTS/FOOTBALL the Magazine 6 5 9 • 256 pages • $25.95 (CAN $28.95) • cloth • Radio interviews on nationally Archival photos throughout syndicated ESPN Radio Network programs as well as NFL market ESPN ISBN: 978-1-60078-981-6 • epub: 978-1-62368-895-0 Radio affiliates kindle: 978-1-62368-896-7 • PDF: 978-1-62368-897-4 • Excerpt and features on ESPN.com Available October 2014 2 [FALL 2014] THE MEMOIR OF AMERICA’S GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER Made in America CHRIS CHELIOS WITH KEVIN ALLEN Regarded by most as the greatest American hockey player of all time, few men have ever been as beloved by fans as Chris Chelios.

  • The Poisoning of an Icon: a Public Relations Challenge for Rival Universities
Volume 1 2012 www.csscjournal.org ISSN 2167-1974 The Poisoning of an Icon: A Public Relations Challenge for Rival Universities Susan E. Waters Auburn University Abstract On February 16, 2011, Auburn University learned that fatal amounts of a controlled herbicide had been applied to two iconic oak trees on Toomer’s Corner, and the act had been one of malicious intent by a fan of its rival school, the University of Alabama. Both universities had critical public relations challenges in front of them. Auburn wanted to keep the public informed about the trees’ progress while encouraging students, fans, and alumni not to retaliate, and Alabama wanted to distance itself from the incident, asserting that the perpetrator was in no way affiliated with the university and to show its support for Auburn University. Both universities were largely successful at each of their respective goals. Keywords: case study; higher education; agenda setting; image restoration theory; social media; football rivalry Overview On February 16, 2011, Auburn University learned that fatal amounts of a controlled herbicide had been applied to two iconic oak trees located at a traditional campus gathering place. That place is known as Toomer’s Corner, and it has been the epicenter for celebrations by Auburn fans, alumni, and students for decades. These oak trees, more than 130 years old, are not just any two trees; of all the trees on campus, these two oak trees incarnate the heart and soul of Auburn (“Auburn University Traditions,” 2011). Auburn University learned that the act had been one of malicious intent by a fan of its rival school, the University of Alabama.

REPORTER January 24, 2017 PAUL FINEBAUM ESPN Radio Host, College Game-Day Co-Anchor Fellow Rotarian, Travis Vance, introduced our speaker Paul Finebaum. To many in Charlotte Rotary, Paul is a familiar voice that has been heard throughout the Southeast for years. Beginning with his early career in the 1980s in Birmingham on WAPI-FM (I-95) and quickly becoming the highest rated sport-talk show in Birmingham. He later had his own radio network launch in 2004 with The Paul Finebaum Radio Network syndicated throughout the southeast affiliates and becoming one of the top sports radio shows in the United States. Paul is a familiar face that has also made numerous contributions and has hosted and co-hosted individual shows ranging from ABC to ESPN. In 2014 he signed with ESPN and agreed to appear on its new SEC Network becoming a regular ranging from SportsCenter, College Football Live, Olbermann and a weekly role on College GameDay along with the other contributors and awarded a Sports Emmy. He’s even appeared on Morning Joe, the popular political show for MSNBC. Today, he produces a radio show out of the network’s regional base in our very own Charlotte, North Carolina! Paul took us on a career journey at Charlotte Rotary on January 24th and shared many, many stories of his interactions and amusing listener and guest reactions over the years. He also shared his opinions on all things college football. Regardless of his many accomplishments ranging from his news/reporting to television and radio career, as well as his many publications, Richard Deitsch said it best: “If you asked me who are the two greatest interviewers on radio and television, I would say Paul Finebaum and Howard Stern.” Thank you, Paul Finebaum, for the many laughs and for not holding back.
