Good afternoon everyone today is another big occassion at the B.E.P Stadium as we host Erith and Belvedere from the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division. I know from my limited experience of that area it's a tough league to play in so we are expecting one of the biggest challenges we have had this season so far.

The story of our season so far has been big games coming thick and fast and credit to the players who have been focused and determined in every one.

Our league campaign has started really well and our exploits in the F A Cup, Vase and other Cups mean we have needed to utilise everyone in the squad. Rotating players at this level is tricky to manage but such is the spirit and mentality with this group the level of performance has remained very high no matter who has played.

Last year we got to this round in the Vase against Clacton and fell short, this year brings another opportunity to go further and we are determined to take it.

Like everyone I am also hoping that somehow despite the continuing increase in infection rate of Covid 19 Non League Football will continue as its so important to all of us and the wider communities our clubs serve.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy the game

The club was established in 1922 as part of a restructure of Belvedere & District, which had been formed in 1918. Belvedere & District had joined Division Two West of the Kent League in 1919, but left the league at the end of the 1920–21 season. The new club joined the Kent League for the 1922–23 season and were placed in Division One. In 1923–24 they reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 3–0 to Clapton at The Den. However, the season also saw them win the Kent Amateur Cup.

After finishing third in 1928–29, Erith & Belvedere joined the Premier Division of the London League, the club's reserves having played in Division One of the league since 1923. However, both teams left the league at the end of the 1929–30 season, with the first team returning to Division One of the Kent League. In 1937–38 they reached the FA Amateur Cup final again, losing 1–0 to Bromley at the Den. During World War II they played in the South-East Combination, winning the league and League Cup double and the Kent Senior Cup in 1941–42.

After the war Erith & Belvedere won the Senior Cup in 1945 and were founder members of the Corinthian League for the 1945–46 season. They won the league's Memorial Shield three times in row between 1947–48 and 1949–50 and were league runners-up in 1962–63 but the league disbanded at the end of the season and together with most other teams in the league, they became members of the new Division One of the Athenian League. They were Division One runners-up in 1970–71, missing out on the title on goal average, and were promoted to the Prem- ier Division. They went on to win the League Cup in 1973–74. After finishing second- from-bottom of the (now single division) Athenian League in 1977–78, the club re- turned to the Kent League.

Erith & Belvedere were Division One champions in 1981–82, earning promotion to the Southern Division of the Southern League. They remained in the division until being moved to the Eastern Division in 1999. After several seasons of struggling, the club dropped back into the Kent League in 2005. In 2012-13 they were league cham- pions; going into the final match they needed to win and better VCD Athletc's result by a margin of five goals. A 7–1 win v Greenwich Borough secured the title and pro- motion to Division One North of the . However, the following sea- son saw them finish bottom of the division, resulting in relegation back to the Kent League, now renamed the Southern Counties East League. In 2016-17 they finished bottom of the league's Premier Division and were relegated to Division One. THE HISTORY OF ERITH & BELVEDERE F.C ...cont

2017-18 saw the club come runners-up in the London FA Senior Cup and end in 4th place in a League Table which saw the top three promoted. 2018/19 was an excellent Campaign for the Deres. Not only were they Double Cup winners but a second placed League finish was enough to clinch promotion earning a place in the Premier Division for 2019/20.

Unfortunately that season was cut short due to the Coronovirus Pandemic so it ended being more eventful off the pitch rather than on it.

Now with a new Board, new Chairman and new Manager the Deres excitedly look forward to the 2020/21 campaign.

Good afternoon all and welcome to today’s FA Vase game against our visitors from Kent, Erith & Belvedere. Once again the club make history, as this is the furthest we have ever been in this competition. Let’s hope we can go even further, although I expect our visi- tors will have something to say about that! Since our last home game when we beat Thame Rangers five nil, we have continued to do what our manager likes to do best, win football matches. On the road we have won in the Vase at Raunds Town, then beaten Holyport in the League Cup, Abingdon Town in the League last Saturday and Westfield Reserves in the Floodlit Cup Tuesday. It’s fair to say that that those travelling supporters have been entertained with lots of goals on the road. Incidentally, Saturday’s league win at Abingdon Town means that if you count our last three league games in the Spartan South Midlands League, we have gone a remarka- ble 31 league fixtures without defeat. Now that’s a record to be proud of. Today’s opponents play in the Southern Counties East. Erith & Belvedere is down in the South East London part of Kent very close to the River Thames. They play at Step 5, so one above us, which means that the lads will have to be at their absolute best if we are to progress. When I saw the draw it bought back memories for me from when I was at Brackley Town and we played them in the Southern League (South). This was some 25 years ago I think. They played at Park View in Erith, or was it Belvedere? Confusingly, they now play at Park View Road, home of Welling United. Anyway, I digress. The old Park View was a dilapidated ground that had seen better days. My lasting memory is the dreadful dressing rooms. They were quite literally falling apart with rain coming through the roof and bare wires hanging down. The benches were in varying states of disrepair and the room was still full of litter from the previous game with everything covered in mud. It was filthy! But the worst was to come; I entered the away team toilet for my pre-match ablutions, passing the yellow stained urinal half hanging off the wall, picking my way through whatever life forms were evolving on the floor and entered the cubicle. There, to my horror, was the biggest example of human waste I had ever wit- nessed (and I’m a plumber by trade), piled almost to the rim. It wasn’t fresh, of that I’m sure. Flies crawled across it, getting their fill, as I almost retched. I then did the most stupid of things. I knew I shouldn’t but something made me. Even as I flushed the chain my head was saying ‘don’t do it you moron’. The next thing I was backing out quicker than a Jofra Archer delivery, followed by a tide of brown oily sludge. Having just es- caped with my life, I managed to find a club official to tell him the toilet was blocked re- ally badly, and do you know what he said? He said ‘Yes guvnor, I knows it is. The team Gaffer don’t like to make visiting teams too comfy, so he says not to unblock it.’ He said this without a hint of apology. He then added ‘probably one of ‘is’ before chuckling. I realised then that we were going to lose and as I retreated to our now stinking dressing room he shouted after me ‘whatever you do mate, don’t flush it!’ So that’s it. We have to beat Erith & Belvedere. I want my revenge! Some of what you have just read may have been jazzed up a little; poetic licence I believe they call it Anyway, that’s enough from me. Enjoy the game and see you in the bar after. RR Uhlsport HELLENIC LEAGUE

A JOURNALIST is only as good as their contacts book, as they say – so we at The Non-League Paper reckon we’re onto a pretty good thing. Printing a weekly paper throughout lockdown, without a ball being kicked, wasn’t easy. In fact, it was only made possible by the ‘fraternity’ – the chairmen and women, managers, players and supporters of football clubs across the land. We’re pretty lucky at The NLP. We have a loyal following and an enviable understanding with the peo- ple we represent. Yes, of course, we realise that having a relationship with the Press is in their interests but it goes be- yond that. A great number of players and managers can be counted as friends and we are very proud of that. A conversation I had with a Step 3 manager the other day reminded me of a very special relationship I struck up with a manager as a young reporter, working on my local paper in Aldershot. George Borg arrived at the Recreation Ground with a high profile and ano-nonsense nature. If he wanted, he could have spat out a young whippersnapper like me. Instead, we became very close and, although he doesn’t know it, it was he who lit the flame for my love affair with the Non-League game. On one occasion, I remember my back page lead story falling through, leaving me high and dry an hour before deadline. In desperation, I gave George a call and explained my dilemma, asking him if he could confirm any transfer speculation to help fill the void. What he gave me was a stronger exclusive than I had originally which became a popular talking point on the terraces. As in most walks of life, a working relationship requires an ‘I’ll-scratch-your-back-if-you-scratch-mine’ thesis. George was a big advocate of this. I remember waiting outside the dressing room door for the Shots boss among a posse of TV crews and national journalists following a FA Cup tie with Brighton & Hove Albion in November 2000. Accepting I would probably only get a fraction of his time, I did contemplate easing his burden by slip- ping off and calling him later. Just as I did though one of the players came to the door and asked specifically for myself and my coun- terpart from the Farnham Herald to come through and speak to George in the managers’ room at the back. The face of the national guys was a picture as the two of us hustled our way through the crowd but when we got to the manager’s changing area, there he was sat on the bench with only a small hand towel to protect his modesty! It was probably the strangest interview I had ever carried out! To this day, I always keep an eye out on how George’s Braintree Town side fare come 5pm on a Satur- day. It’s a relationship which taught me so much and one I will always treasure. Jon Crouch CLUB Todays Mascot MERCHANDISE Zachary Young aged 6

It’s been a weird few weeks for me. At the start of October I welcomed a gorgeous baby girl in to my life and all the related awake time, poo and everything else you need to learn quickly - but don’t worry this isn’t a new parenting column in your programme notes!

What it’s meant is that I haven’t been to a game in over 30 days - which is probably the longest period of time ’I ve spent away from the game since I was a teenager (pre-season doesn’t count because as any volunteer knows, non-league football never ever stops).

And Football in never stops either. We’ve been a bit slower this month but I wanted to take these notes just to thank everyone who’s picked up the slack for me while I’ve not been about.

Rob Davies, Abi Ticehurst, Steve Gabb, Tony Hardy, Alicia Povey and Neil Maskell have made some brilliant contributions over the month, writing, audio and visually and our amazing photographers have been supplying great images, from Neil Gra- ham, Richard Claypole, Hannah Cooper, Richard Milam and Andrew Batt amongst many others have gone football crazy and I’m ever so grateful to all of them. The site has grown beyond my wildest dreams and is now read by 24,000 people a month accessing our news, reports, podcasts and more on the great non-league game in Berkshire - which I think you’ll agree is ridiculous!

So while this isn’t a typical weekly set of programme notes, as I prepare to hopeful- ly (Covid, tears (and tier’s) permitting) get back out to a game at the weekend, I wanted to just offer my thanks to all our readers and contributors, I know Duds would be proud!

Lastly, we are always looking for new contributors to the site, if you have any ideas or would just like to get involved, drop me an email to [email protected]
