Defining Man As Animal Religiosum in English Religious Writing C. 1650–C
Accepted for publication in Church History for publication in September 2019. Title: Defining Man as Animal Religiosum in English Religious Writing c. 1650–c. 1700 Abstract: This article surveys the emergence and usage of the redefinition of man not as animal rationale (a rational animal) but as animal religiosum (a religious animal) by numerous English theologians between 1650 and 1700. Across the continuum of English protestant thought human nature was being re-described as unique due to its religious, not primarily its rational, capabilities. The article charts this appearance as a contribution to debates over man’s relationship with God; then its subsequent incorporation into the subsequent debate over the theological consequences of arguments in favor of animal rationality, as well as its uses in anti-atheist apologetics; and then the sudden disappearance of the definition of man as animal religiosum at the beginning of the eighteenth century. In doing so, the article hopes to make a useful contribution to our understanding of changing early modern understandings of human nature by reasserting the significance of theological debates within the context of seventeenth-century debate about the relationship between humans and beasts and by offering a more wide-ranging account of man as animal religiosum than the current focus on ‘Cambridge Platonism’ and ‘Latitudinarianism’ allows. A sliding system located between the structure and the support allows differential motion between them. The aim of this paper is the presentation of the method to calculate the res- ponse of the structure when the structure is represented by its elgenmodes, and the sliding phenomenon by the Coulomb friction model. Finally, an application to a simple structure shows the influence on the response of the main parameters (friction coefficient, stiffness,...). 2. COULOMB FRICTION HODEL Let us consider a stiff mass, layed on an horizontal support and submitted to an external force Fe (parallel to the support). When Fg is smaller than a limit force ? p there is no differential motion between the support and the mass and the friction force balances the external force. The limit force is written: Fj1 = \x Fn where \i is the friction coefficient and Fn the modulus of the normal force applied by the mass to the support (in this case, Fn is equal to the weight of the mass). -

Leftheris Institute of Applied Mechanics, Department of Engineering Greece Abstract The basic concepts and assumptions used in the response spectrum analysis method is reviewed in this paper with respect to its application in historical buildings. More specifically, the methodology of modeling and the applica- tion of the response spectrum analysis is described and discussed through our work with the Lighthouse at the Venetian Harbor of Chania. 1 Introduction The main cause of damage in building structures during an earthquake is usually their response to ground induced motions. In order to evaluate the behaviour of the structure for this type of loading condition, the princip- les of structural dynamics must be applied to determine the stresses and deflections generated in the structure. The dynamic characteristics of the building is established by its natu- ral frequencies, modes and damping: the analysis is based on linear-elastic behaviour of materials and the ground input motion is a smoothed de- sign spectrum in order to calculate the maximum values of the structural response. In this work we describe the application of response spectrum analysis to the Lighthouse at the Venetian Harbour of Chania. We use the example, however, to discuss the requirements of response spectrum analy- sis for historical buildings in general. The Lighthouse is a masonry structure built by the Egyptians in 1838. Richard Simon Critical History of the Text of the New Testament New Testament Tools, Studies and Documents New Testament Tools, Studies, and Documents (NTTSD) combines two series, New Testament Tools and Studies (NTTS) and Studies and Documents (SD). The former was founded by Bruce M. Metzger in 1965 and edited by him until 1993, when Bart D. Ehrman joined him as co-editor. The latter series was founded by Kirsopp and Silva Lake in 1935, edited by them until the death of Kirsopp Lake in 1946, then briey by Silva Lake and Carsten Høeg (1955), followed by Jacob Geerlings (until 1969), by Irving Alan Sparks (until 1993), and nally by Eldon Jay Epp (until 2007). The new series will promote the publication of primary sources, reference tools, and critical studies that advance the understanding of the New Testament and other early Christian writings and writers into the fourth century. Emphases of the two predecessor series will be retained, including the textual history and transmission of the New Testament and related literature, relevant manuscripts in various languages, methodologies for research in early Christianity. Preface, Poets and philosophers, writers and thinkers, those who have weighed the problem of human destiny, whatever may have been their educational bias, or religious proclivities, have often risen to a more or less distinct conception of the thought that evil is transient and good eternal, and that the Author of man will ultimately perfect his chief work. The deliverance of the whole human family from sin and sorrow, its final holiness and happiness, has been the thought of multitudes, even when the prevailing doctrines around them were wholly hostile; and, in and out of Christendom, the great thought has scarcely ever been without witnesses among men. It was dis- tinctly revealed by Jesus, in his Gospel, and forms the burthen of prophet and apostle, bard and seer, from Genesis to Revelation, and it has also brightened the pages of literature in every age of the world, since man possessed a literature. Twenty-five years ago the compiler of this volume published a little work entitled "Witnesses to the Truth, containing Passages from Distinguished Authors, developing the great Truth of Uni- versal Salvation." The subsequent quarter- century has added im- mensely to the testimony that men of genius have given in attesta- tion to the sublimest fact in human history that has ever come to human knowledge, and the further reading of the compiler has en- abled him to adduce authors whose words were then unknown to him, some of whom are among the best who have ever written. -

Introduction The most direct description of an earthquake motion in time domain is provided by accelerograms that are recorded by instruments called Strong Motion Accelerographs. The accelerograph records three orthogonal components of ground acceleration at a certain location. The peak ground acceleration, duration, and frequency content of earthquake can be obtained from an accelerograms. An accelerogram can be integrated to obtain the time variations of the ground velocity and ground displacement. Structures subject to earthquake It is similar to a vehicle moving on the ground. In both cases there is relative movement between the vibrating system (structures or machines) and the ground. ug(t) is the ground motion, while u(t) is the motion of the mass relative to ground. If the ground acceleration from an earthquake is known, the response of the structure can be computed via using the Newmark’s method. BY STEPHEN EMMEL The present investigation seeks to clarify statements in the secondary Coptological literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries con- cerning the existence of a “Codex St.-Louis,”1 that is to say, a Coptic manuscript supposedly brought to Paris by Louis IX at the end of the Sixth Crusade in 1254.2 The Objects of Investigation (1) Bibliothèque Nationale de France (FR-BN), manuscript Copte 13. A beautifully illustrated Tetraevangelium (the four Gospels) in Bohairic Coptic, copied and illuminated between 1178 and 1180 by Michael, 1 So called by René-Georges Coquin in correspondence between us in the early 1990s. 2 Most of the basic research for this investigation was done a little over a decade ago, and I now take the occasion of the Eighth International Congress of Coptic Studies (Paris, June/July 2004, with an accompanying exhibition titled “Pages d’une autre Égypte: les manuscrits des Coptes” planned by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France to include the manuscript in question, Copte 13) to report it. In this week’s Weekend Reader, we will consider one key critique of his thought: The ability to live with messiness. The Bible is a complicated work, and learning to live in humility with its complications can elevate all that study it. We will look at a case study in messiness — the topic of Biblical reformulations — in the hope of better understanding the Bible’s complexity. Learning to Live with the Messiness In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, economists were in a state of disarray. Much like the state of pollsters after the 2016 election, economists were stunned by their failure to anticipate such a major event occurring. New York Times and economist Paul Krugman suggested in his 2009 piece “How Did Economists Get It So Wrong?” that economists have been mislead by the “desire for an all-encompassing, intellectually elegant approach that also gave economists a chance to show off their mathematical prowess.” Seeking the grand narrative of economics has led economists to mistake truth for beauty, and redemption of economics can come only by learning to accept the less beautiful parts of economic realities, and “learn[ing] to live with the messiness.” Rabbi Dr. -
