I Had Dreaded He Was Mad”: Reading the Intersections of Mental Illness and Masculinity in Jane Eyre By Avalon Warner-Gonzales Honors Thesis Department of English and Comparative Literature University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 2017 Advised by Dr. Kimberly Stern Warner-Gonzales 1 Introduction: Discourses of Madness and Mental Illness Madness has long been an object of fascination in the cultural imagination, constituting the focal point of many works of literature, television, and film. One of the most famous examples of this trend is Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, the 1848 novel that gave us the infamous “madwoman in the attic,” Bertha Mason. As we see exemplified in Brontë’s representation of Bertha, the majority of works representing madness portray it in a negative light. “Madness” as an ideological framework is more overtly couched in cultural assumptions and deep-seated prejudices as compared to our current ideological framework in place of “mental illness,” which relies more on a neutral and clinical stance thanks to advances in neuroscience and psychology in the past century. The shift toward this ostensibly neutral and objective modern psychology has its roots in the nineteenth century, which acted as a transition into the period of advancements that took place in the twentieth century.1 Thus, as a mid-nineteenth century novel, Jane Eyre straddles these two ages, and arguably displays examples of both madness and mental illness. The most obvious example is Bertha Mason, whose character is entirely based on the conventions and discourses of “madness” from the preceding century. -

In this paper, two characters, namely Medea in Euripides’ Medea and Bertha Mason in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre , are chosen to explore the female images in love and revenge stories. Seen from the perspective of feminism, their images are undeniably special and even subversive in comparison with common female characters. A prominent revelation of it lies in their independence from their male spouses named Jason and Rochester respectively. With the superiority in power, Medea and Mason are able to extricate themselves largely from the reliance of their husbands, thus gaining the courage to pursue their happiness in love as well as the determination to defend their dignity by taking revenge. However, limitations do exist due to the male dominance in the patriarchal society. -

One hundred years after its appearance on the scientific scene, autism finds its place more and more often in the spotlight not only in clinical and therapeutical psychology – in addition to medicine, psychology and neurosci- ence, today schools and health services also deal with it widely. However, autism as a concept remains controversial as well as a phenomenon not yet well understood. Psychoanalysis can help to understand how the concept arose within psychology and how it has changed up to contemporary times. In most cases – the famous ones as well as ordinary ones – the autistic child who finds himself at school seems uneducable and avoids close contact. What kind of special educational needs can we find with autism? This paper is based on Freudian discoveries in order to offer a direction that gives an answer to enlighten the subjective desire to be human among humans even in the case of autism. Focusing on literary, scientific, and journalistic examples, I used the AntConc system to collect a quantitative sample of every word listed the texts used for the analysis. The texts analyzed through the system are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Physiology and Psychology of the Mind by Henry Maudsley, The Construction and Government of Lunatic Asylums and Hospitals for the Insane by John Connolly, and the collection of newspaper articles on Mary Lawson from the Hull Advertiser and Exchange Gazette. iv Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr.
