The these outlandish things are so wonderfully illustrated by Chang doesn't hurtBy IssiyoDisagree with the other reviewer.I'm usually not a fan of things with the "kitchen sink" mentality, but here I feel it works well. The these outlandish things are so wonderfully illustrated by Chang doesn't hurt. Overall an engaging story, a chaotic (interesting chaotic, not off putting chaotic) world, and a likable protagonist help put this on some people's "to read" list.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy MarcHumour is fun ans refreshing . Easy to follow . Nice drawing . would read more of it.good size too0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. i enjoyed it, I t didn't hurt that I live ...By David GuthI've been out of science fiction, and away from comics for too long to be an educated critic. i enjoyed it, I t didn't hurt that I live in LA, so the scenery made it easy to relate to the story From critically acclaimed comic book writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (The Bunker, Echoes, and I, Vampire) and superstar artists Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo (Green Lantern Corps, Batman Beyond) comes a postapocalyptic action/adventure comedy.King just wants what anybody wants: not to get fired, eaten, or forced to mate with a cheetah lady. For Earthrsquo;s sole human survivor after the apocalypse, life among Los Angelesrsquo;s strange new populace ainrsquo;t easy. Working for the LA Department of Reclamation, King gets a lot of crappy jobs going on quests and searching for artifacts from the ldquo;old world, rdquo; which can range from the mythical (Excalibur!) to the absurd (an iPod shufflemdash;which, letrsquo;s be honest, was a terrible, terrible invention). The commute can be a real pain in the asphalt, too; the 405 freeway is filled with mutants, monsters, mayhem, and tentacled Elder Gods. And thatrsquo;s all before you hit the horrors of the San Fernando Valley. As the worldrsquo;s freakish inhabitants battle for supremacy, King searches for the ldquo;seed of life, rdquo; which may give Earth the second chance it probably doesnrsquo;t even deserve. This book was initially released in episodes as a Kindle Serial. All episodes are now available for immediate download as a complete book. ldquo;King #1 is undoubtedly fun, filled to the brim with wild set pieces and anthropomorphic action.rdquo; mdash;IGN ldquo; With a lot of L.A.-specific jokes about navigating the 405 and the San Fernando valley, King reads like a post-apocalyptic version of that Saturday Night Live skit lsquo; The Californians.rsquo;rdquo; mdash;Mental Floss ldquo;Fialkov is an excellent writer who is able to capture and convey tone and personality through his character with certain immediacy. Within pages, readers can fully understand the approach Fialkov is taking with this book and it is impressive just how efficiently he can reach such a point...A large piece of the book, including the tone set and the enjoyment of the issue, is the art by Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo. lsquo;Vibrantrsquo; is the best way to describe the artwork on display in King. The book feels like it is actually glowing a bit as Maiolorsquo;s colors shine and pop. For a world in shambles following a devastating apocalypse and the fall of mankind, Chang and Maiolo have come to a very different conclusion about just how that place should look than most would.rdquo; mdash;All- Comic.com ldquo; While horror writer Joshua Hale Fialkov pens the story, the horror elements are cast aside. There are elements of grit and vulgarity, but it is not in levels where those attracted to the grotesque would feel more at home. Fialkov instead melds comedic timing with an adventurous protagonist to give King a heroic bad-boy persona...The artistic team of Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo work wonderful together, blending their artistic styles to create a vibrant twist on post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. The decision to give King a shield made out of a City of Los Angeles sign was a stroke of brilliance and adds to the lighter feeling this comic gives out...King #1 is a great work for Jet City Comics to deliver and they tapped the right talent to flesh out this strange new world.rdquo; mdash;Geek Chic EliteAbout the AuthorJoshua Hale Fialkov is a creator of graphic novels, including Elkrsquo;s Run, The Bunker, The Life After, Punks, Tumor, and Echoes. He also served as a writer on the Emmy Awardndash;nominated animated film Afro Samurai: Resurrection. He has written comics for companies including Marvel, DC, Legendary, WildStorm, IDW, Dark Horse, Image, Tor Books, Seven Seas Entertainment, Del Rey, Random House, Dabel Brothers Productions, and St. Martinrsquo;s Press. He also wrote a Syfy Channel movie starring Isabella Rossellini and Judd Nelson. Unfortunately, at no point in the film does Judd Nelson punch the sky and freeze-frame.Joshua grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; went to college in Boston, where he got a BFA in writing and directing; and then worked in the New England film industry until finally deciding to move to Los Angeles to do it properly. He lives with his wife, author Christina Rice; their daughter; their dogs, Cole and Olaf (Twelve Monkeys and Frozen, respectively); and a very unimpressed cat.Bernard Chang (born 1972 in Montreal, Canada) is an Asian American artist/designer best known for his work in the comic book industry and in entertainment design. Chang started drawing comics professionally in 1992 while attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, on a full scholarship for architecture. Within his first year, he was voted onto the Wizard magazine Top Ten Artists list for his work on The Second Life of Dr. Mirage for Valiant Comics, and he was nominated for the Russ Manning Award for Best Newcomer. After four years at Valiant, Bernard went on to illustrate books for Marvel Comics and DC Comics, including X-Men, New Mutants, Cable, Deadpool, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman. His recent credits include Green Lantern Corps and Batman Beyond.Marcelo Maiolo is a Brazilian comic book colorist whose credits include X-Men, Green Arrow, Constantine, Superman, Batman Beyond, Green Lantern Corps, Teen Titans, Demon Knights, Pacific Rim, and I, Vampire. • Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry
Igor Juricevic, ‘Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry: THE COMICS GRID David Bowie’s Contribution to Comic Book Visual Language’ Journal of comics scholarship (2017) 7(1): 4 The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship, DOI: https://doi.org/10.16995/cg.94 RESEARCH Aladdin Sane and Close-Up Eye Asymmetry: David Bowie’s Contribution to Comic Book Visual Language Igor Juricevic Department of Psychology, Indiana University South Bend, South Bend, US [email protected] In April 1973 David Bowie released Aladdin Sane. The cover of Aladdin Sane features an iconic image of David Bowie, a close-up shot of the artist with brightly colored orange hair and asymmetrical lightning bolt make-up on the right side of his face. This article argues that the cover image for Aladdin Sane uses the Close-Up Eye Asymmetry (CUE-A) pictorial device (i.e., close-up view of David Bowie, asymmetrical make-up around his eye) and that CUE-A was adopted into Comic Book Visual Language by first providing evidence that CUE-A is used in comic book art. A link is then established between comic book art and music album art by showing that: (1) David Bowie was familiar with Comic Book Visual Language and could make a contribution to the language, and (2) comic book artists are influenced by music album art. I then make a case that the adoption of CUE-A into Comic Book Visual Language was specifically due to the cover image for Aladdin Sane by analyzing: (1) the use of CUE-A by influential artists in the 1990s and (2) the different rates of adoption of CUE-A for the depiction of established versus newer comic book characters.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE Fight Like a Girl: A Qualitative Content Analysis of How Superheroines are Portrayed in Comic Books A graduate project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Sociology By Kimberly Romero December 2020 Copyright by Kimberly Romero 2020 ii The graduate project of Kimberly Romero is approved: _________________________________________ ______________ Dr. Michael Carter Date _________________________________________ ______________ Dr. Stacy Missari Date _________________________________________ ______________ Dr. Moshoula Capous-Desyllas, Chair Date California State University, Northridge iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to start off by acknowledging my parents for braving through a civil war, poverty, pain, political criticisms, racial stereotypes, and the constant bouts of uncertainty that immigrating to the United States, seeking asylum from the dangers plaguing their home country of El Salvador, has presented them with throughout the years. If it were not for your sacrifices, we would not have the lives and opportunities we have now. Having your constant love and support means the world to me. You are both my North Stars for everything I do. I would also like to acknowledge my sister for convincing Mom and Dad to let you name me after two of your greatest childhood role models, superheroines, and cultural icons. The Pink Power Ranger and The Queen of Tejano music are both pretty huge namesakes to live up to. I hope I do their legacies justice and that I am making you proud. I know I do not say this to you often but know that, through all our ups and downs, you were my hero growing up.

I said this in the volume one review, but it's crazy how distinctive Hickman's voice is that when Humphries takes over you grow sadder as a doom laden book of apocalypse becomes-- not at all a bad book-- but another action packed adventure. The Ultimates 2 Cover art to The Ultimates 2 1. So what happens? He lives with his wife, Christina, daughter, Gable, and their cats, Smokey and the Bandit. This character really works both ways because of his immense genius. Rider Haggard Books. Books by Jonathan Hickman. The specifics of the battle are quite immaterial as far as the review goes but overall this volume is a big let-down. Hulk 5 Ultimate Wolverine vs. Other editions. Overall, an enormous miss. This book was pretty much the second part of the story begun in the first volume Ultimate Comics: Ultimates by Jonathan Hickman, Vol. Friend Reviews. The way that the Hulk is used for the rest of the story is rather frivolous and ridiculous.
