Area Budget 2012/13 – Applications for funding

Purpose of Report: To make recommendations on applications for funding from the Garscadden/Scotstounhill Area Budget 2012/13.

Recommendations: The committee is asked to approve the recommendations on applications for funding, as detailed in Appendix 1.

1.1 The committee is asked to consider applications for funding from the Area Budget 2012/13 from organisations serving the Garscadden /Scotstounhill ward.

1.2 The recommendations have been made following detailed assessments of each proposal and any special conditions that should be applied to an award, in addition to the Council’s standard Conditions of Grant. These are detailed in the Appendix.

3.1 The committee is asked to approve the recommendations on current applications for funding, as detailed in Appendix 1.

1. Knightswood CA Wednesday Club, 201 Alderman Road, G13 3DD Funding is required towards coach hire for a trip to Stirling on 9th May 2012 for approximately 49 people. Club meets each Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm Brief description of proposal September to March. Activities include social events and guest speakers on a variety of topics appertaining to issues affecting older people. The application was received on 24 April 2012, prior to the event, it is therefore eligible for consideration. 2. Framework for Dialogue Steering Group, meets at a variety of venues across the north west sector (Garnethill Multi Cultural Centre, Knightswood Secondary School, Heart of Scotstoun, Kingsway Court Health and Wellbeing Centre and St Joseph’s Primary School).

The group is planning a trip for approximately 60 people (made up of local families) to North Berwick Brief description of proposal on 9th August 2012. Whilst meetings are held in numerous venues across three wards the majority of the membership who attend the meetings and participate in events reside within ward 13. Friends of Victoria Park, Victoria Park Drive South, 54 Park Drive South, G14 9QR To assist with Phase 1 of the refurbishment of the cast iron Jubilee Gates, a grade ‘B’ listed structure erected in July 1887 prior to the 125th Anniversary celebrations in September 2012. Phase 2 will incorporate the creation of a public realm space and a Heritage Learning Activity for which funding is being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A technical survey on the damage and degradation of the gates has been undertaken and Brief description of work has been completed to form the basis of a tender bid for the proposal restoration work which should begin in June 2012 to ensure completion before the anniversary events begin. Land and Environmental Services, whilst assisting the group to manage the project and submit funding applications to appropriate organisations, has agreed to provide funding of up to £20,000 dependent upon success of securing additional funding from other sources. LINKES, 200 Lincoln Avenue, Knightswood, Glasgow To assist with the costs of a six week summer programme for approximately 60 school age children and young people who reside within the multi storey flats in Lincoln Avenue, which are listed within the most deprived 5% of ’s population. Many of the children are in receipt of free meals and the long summer holiday places an extra burden on families, in terms of food and activities. The proposal will benefit the wider community by diverting potentially destructive energy of the young people into productive activity.

The proposed programme will operate each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the format will incorporate play sessions from 11am to 12noon, lunch provision 12noon to 1pm; and afternoon activities from 1pm to 3pm each Monday and Wednesday. On Friday of each week the group will participate in an organized trip by coach to places of interest i.e. Dean Castle Country Park, Brief description of a boat trip on Loch Lomond, a visit to museums. proposal The activities will encourage friendship, keep the children and young people active, provide a routine to keep momentum going for school, encourage discipline and enhance emotional and mental wellbeing. 3 volunteers daily will be utilised through XChange Scotland, an internationally recognized charity to allow participants to benefit from people of other cultures. Glasgow Life will provide an additional staff member each Friday to assist with the proposed trips and have allocated £500 to assist with the costs of two of the proposed trips. Children in Need funding cannot be used to meet the volunteer expenses or travel costs whilst on the trips. Area Budget funding is also ineligible for ongoing travel costs and criteria for bus hire is once per annum award of £250 maximum. Ongoing transport costs are food are ineligible within the Area Budget grant guidelines. Mearns After School Care MACS (Scotstoun Service) Scotstoun Primary School, 21 Duncan Avenue, G14 9HN To purchase equipment for the weekdays after school care (2.45pm to 6pm) and holiday care (07.45am – 6pm) service provided for local families within Scotstoun Primary School. 103 children are registered with the service and 60 attend on a daily basis.

An activity programme is to be created to support the children’s interests, hobbies and individual needs and will be delivered by qualified childcare staff. St Brendans Primary School, 170 Hawick Street, G13 4HG Funding is required to purchase an initial number of stimulating resources for the school’s nurture classroom which is attended by children experiencing a wide range of behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

The new resources will improve the quality of the current resources, provide a more welcoming and Brief description of proposal stimulating environment and will allow the teaching staff to create and develop and optimum environment in which the children will thrive and ultimately be given the best possible chance of achieving their full potential in primary school and beyond.

Yoker String Ensemble, St Brendans Primary School, 170 Hawick Street, G13 4HG Funding is requested to purchase musical equipment and assist with weekly travel costs for pupils attending the practice sessions held at St Brendan’s Primary School on Friday afternoons. Attendance is open to any primary pupil from local schools in ward 13 who receives instrumental lessons and approximately 30 children participate regularly.

The children form a large String Ensemble and benefit Brief description of proposal both musically and socially from the rehearsals. They also take part in competitions and concerts within the schools, nurseries and Old Folks Homes.

Playing a musical instrument is a life skill and it is important to encourage children to play within groups from an early age to encourage and develop their early playing thus ensuring they continue to develop this skill into secondary school and beyond.
