MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees Should Push to Land Yu Darvish MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees Should Push to Land Yu Darvish Author : The New York Yankees are in the market for a starting pitcher and may have Yu Darvish on their radar. This past week, the Yankees sent scouts to St. Petersburg to scout Darvish while he pitched against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Texas Rangers appear to be out of the race in the American League and the American League West and seemed prime to sell off this summer. Yu Darvish is one of the primary trade chips that Texas has and given the fact that the Yankees need pitching in order to make a playoff run, the two sides seem like they could match up for a potential trade. Given the fact that the Yankees haven't lunged themselves at what the Oakland A's want for Sonny Gray, they could find themselves in a prime position to make a deal. Now obviously, Yu Darvish simply won't be given away by the Rangers. But given the fact that Darvish will be a free agent at the end of the season, Brian Cashman isn't exactly going to sell the farm off either. So if the Yankees are serious for Darvish; which they should be since he could definitely help their rotation, what could the Yankees look to offer Texas? Domingo Acevedo has been heavily scouted and could be a potential asset the Rangers might look at. Reports have indicated that Oakland likes Acevedo and may want him and Jorge Mateo in a potential Sonny Gray deal. 1 / 2 If Texas doesn't ask for Mateo in trade talks and asks the Yankees for lower prospects; Tyler Wade, Kyle Holder, Zack Littell or Billy McKinney to name a few, then that might give the Yankees incentive to make a deal with Texas over dealing with Oakland. If the Yankees have to make the choice on who to acquire, Yu Darvish would help in the short term and he wouldn't hurt the Yankees farm system long term. On the field, Yu Darvish is pitching to a 6-8 record with a 3.44 ERA in 21 starts and 143 strikeouts in 133.1 innings. The record might be under .500, but that's hardly anything to worry about since he's been on an underachieving Texas team; Darvish was on the 2017 American League All Star team. With the Yankees, their rotation has been decent, but it can be better. Masahiro Tanaka has been up and down all year. CC Sabathia has returned from the disabled list and has pitched well. Luis Severino has been as close to an ace as it goes; he too was part of the American League All Star team. Jordan Montgomery has been pitching well, but he has had his struggles as well. Michael Pineda is out for the season and Luis Cessa is hardly a major league starting pitcher. Having Yu Darvish in the rotation could help spark the Yankees playoff push. They already got the help they needed for the bullpen by acquiring David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle and they hope they have the infield help they need with Todd Frazier. Yu Darvish could be the final piece needed to help the Yankees get back to October baseball. 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. • Applying Matching Equation to Pitch Selection in Major League Baseball
APPLYING MATCHING EQUATION TO PITCH SELECTION IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL __________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Masters of Education in Applied Behavior Analysis __________________________________________________________________ David Dragone August 2018 Examining Committee Members: Donald Hantula, Ph.D., Thesis Advisor, Department of Psychology Matt Tincani, Ph. D., BCBA-D, Department of Education Amanda Guld Fisher, Ph. D., BCBA-D, College of Education ABSTRACT This study applied the generalized matching equation (GME) to pitch selection in MLB during the 2016 regular season. The GME was used to evaluate the pitch selection of 21 groups of pitchers as well as 144 individual pitchers. The GME described pitch selection well for four of the 21 pitching groups and 32 of the 144 individual pitchers. Of the remaining groups and individual pitchers, behavior may be explained by rule following behavior or be impacted by distant reinforcers such as salary. All 21 groups demonstrated a bias for fastballs as well as 119 of the 144 individual pitchers. The results extend the use of the GME to natural contexts and suggest an alternative view to evaluating pitchers. KEYWORDS: general matching theory, general matching equation, sports, baseball, reinforcement ii DEDICATION This study is dedicated to the countless number of people who have supported me throughout the years both in this degree and professionally. Investigating Major League Baseball Pitchers and Quality of Contact through Cluster Analysis Charlie Marcou Introduction The rise of sabermetrics, the quantitative analysis of baseball, has changed how baseball front offices operate, how prospects are evaluated and developed, and how baseball is played on the field. Stolen bases are on the decline, while strikeouts, walks, and homeruns have steadily increased. Hitters care more and more about their launch angle and pitchers have started using high speed cameras to analyze their movement. Despite these changes, there are still many areas that need investigation. This paper seeks to investigate the quality of contact that a pitcher allows. Not much is currently known about quality of contact, but if factors determining quality of contact could be determined it could assist teams in identifying and developing pitching talent.

  • The Summer of Scott Boras's Discontent
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLS\10-1\HLS103.txt unknown Seq: 1 21-JAN-19 9:06 Hope and Faith: The Summer of Scott Boras’s Discontent Matthew J. Parlow* Abstract The 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) free agency period drew great attention from fans and commentators alike because of the seeming lack of lucrative contracts offered to this year’s players. Theories abounded about the reasons for the slow and anomalous free agent market. Some saw it as simply a relatively weak group of free agents. Others viewed the 2018 free agent market as representing a more systemic shift in the business and oper- ation of baseball, particularly with the rise of data analytics. Still, others pointed to the increase in the “tanking” phenomenon in MLB as the reason for the change in free agency. While each of these theories provides some explanation for what MLB experienced during the 2018 offseason, these nar- ratives provide only an incomplete picture of the changes that MLB exper- ienced. In particular, they overlook how the competitive balance reforms contained in the latest MLB collective bargaining agreement (CBA) contrib- uted to these changes in the free agent market. In an attempt to create better competitive balance among teams, the MLB CBA may have created a context within which teams are incentivized to move away from established approaches to roster development and payroll. Given the unique legal status of CBAs, the players are likely stuck with this new normal in the free agent market until the current MLB CBA expires in 2021. This article explores * Dean and Donald P.

TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS – August 2, 2013 TEXASRANGERS.COM Darvish dazzles D-backs with 14 K's in win Ties single-game high in 16th career double-digit-punchout effort By Master Tesfatsion 8/1/2013 11:19 PM ET ARLINGTON -- The Rangers didn't get a chance for their fourth consecutive walk-off win. Blame Yu Darvish, who wouldn't stop striking out the D-backs on Thursday. He was electric in his 21st start of 2013, matching a career high with 14 strikeouts in a 7-1 Texas win at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. It's the fourth time Darvish has had a 14-strikeout game this season, passing Nolan Ryan for the most times accomplishing the feat in a season in club history. Darvish recorded double-digit punchouts for the 16th time in his career, and fell two short of tying the franchise record for most strikeouts in a game, twice done by Ryan. Darvish is the first pitcher with four 14-K games in a season since Randy Johnson in 2004. "He was as good as I've seen all year, counting the almost perfect game he threw the first start of the year," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "His stuff was just nasty. He's throwing fastballs to the corners, he had a really good split tonight, and obviously he always has his slider. He just kept mixing it up and strikeouts kept coming and coming. Nights like that are fun." Darvish allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings. With the 14 punchouts, Darvish has the second-most strikeouts through the first 50 career games, 407, among players to debut since 1900, behind Dwight Gooden.
