Professional Hitting Instruction PROFESSIONAL HITTING INSTRUCTION Tid Bits: - Nine out of ten kids are taught the wrong mechanics at a young age and never reach their potential. - 85% of a hitters power must come from the lower half, most players are taught to swing with their arms. - The swing must travel on the plane of the ball heading slightly up giving a hitter the Photography by Mark Mauno greatest margin for error. Ryan Lehr has had the unique opportunity of spending the last 8 years studying the science and physics of hitting under his mentor Reggie Smith. Smith, the former 7 time MLB All Star, Red Sox Hall of Famer, and current hitting coach for USA Baseball, has developed an elite cutting edge balance program that has transcended the future of player development in all levels of baseball. The balance program has players from little leaguers to Major League players from the WBC team and Matt Kemp taking their games to an elite level of excel- lence. Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 8th round of the 1997 draft, Ryan spent 12 years play- ing professionally for former greats such as Frank Howard, Steve Yeager, Joe Ferguson and Tim Wallach. Having spent his tenure under the Braves, Angels, Astros, Orioles, and Royals organizations, Ryan’s wealth of knowledge and his passion to develop talent is an asset to the future stars of Southern California. The balance program will provide the following: * What a natural and efficient swing consists of. * Instruction on the importance of balance as it relates to the ability of your eyes and brain to process information. Being in balance will improve timing and the ability to accurately and consistently hit the ball hard. * Participants will be measured for their own individual balance position allowing the natural fundamentals to occur in proper sequence. * How to correct flaws in the swing. * How to use the legs and hips when in a balanced position. Legs and hips must generate the power in a swing. * Ryan will educate the players how to keep the path of the bat on the baseball for a longer period of time. Participants will learn what happens when the body is not in proper balance and how the ability to consistently hit the ball harder will be greatly enhanced. Call for rates today! • Introduction
11 INTRODUCTION As the 20th century melted into the 21st, the well-meaning folks at Minor League Baseball made plans to celebrate the 100 greatest teams in the history of the minors since 1901. A hundred teams for 100 years. Assigned to rank the teams were highly respected baseball historians Bill Weiss and Marshall Wright. The job — as with all efforts like this — was a thankless one for Weiss and Wright. Really now, who could say for sure if the 1920 St. Paul Saints, who were No. 6 on their list, were that much better than, say, the 1990 West Palm Beach Expos, who checked in at No. 89? C’mon, were the 1903 Jersey City Skeeters appreciably better at No. 7 than the 1983 Reading Phillies were at 62? How does one differentiate between teams? The teams ranked in the Top 100 played in different classifications in dramatically different eras with demographics that kept teams in the minors from being nothing more than a whites-only club until 1946, when Jackie Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers’ top farm team in Montreal. These variables made the rankings flawed from the outset, when the 1944 Milwaukee Brewers were the first team announced at No. 100. Eventually, the countdown reached 73, and that was where Minor League Baseball placed the 1993 Harrisburg Senators. Seventy-freaking-third. Anybody who saw that team knew better. More than 15 years after its release at the turn of the new millennium, the MiLB Top 100 list — specifically, Harrisburg’s ranking — still irked Jim Tracy, the Senators’ manager in 1993.

  • TIM RAINES' HALL of FAME CASE (Pdf)
UP, UP, & AWAY brighter by the constant presence of Expos players. A few of them would show up to teach baseball skills and talk to campers for $100, maybe $200 for a couple hours; most of them did it for free. Raines was one of them. The campers sure as hell remember. “I was six, maybe seven years old, and I remember Raines being there,” said Brian Benjamin, who along with Elan Satov, Eric Kligman, and Andrew “Bean” Kensley formed the core of the Maple Ridge Boys, the group of classmates who accompanied me to hundreds of games at the Big O growing up. “He was hitting balls out of the park, onto the street, and I just stood there in awe watching. Then he came over and talked to us for a long time. I mean, I loved Tim Raines.” Unfortunately, and unfairly, the voting members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America haven’t loved Raines as much. aTIM RAINES’ HALL OF FAME CASEb At this writing, Raines has come up for Hall of Fame induction seven times, and been rejected seven times. This is ridiculous. From 1981 through 1990 with the Expos, Raines hit .302 and posted a .391 on-base percentage (second-best in the NL). During that time he drew 769 walks, just 17 behind the first- place Dale Murphy among National League players in those 10 seasons. Raines stole a league-leading 626 bases, more than Cardinals speedster Vince Coleman, and nearly twice as many as the number-three player on the list, Coleman’s teammate Ozzie Smith.

Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

College Baseball Foundation P.O. Box 6507 Phone: 806-742-0301 x249 Lubbock TX 79493-6507 E-mail: [email protected] January 30, 2008 Boyd, Thank you for participating in the balloting for the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2008 Induction Class. We appreciate your willingness to help. In the voters packet you will find the official ballot, an example ballot, and the nominee biographies: 1. The official ballot is what you return to us. Please return to us no later than Mon- day, February 11. 2. The example ballot’s purpose is to demonstrate the balloting rules. Obviously the names on the example ballot are not the nominee names. That was done to prevent you from being biased by the rankings you see there. 3. Each nominee has a profile in the biography packet. Some are more detailed than others and reflect what we received from the institutions and/or obtained in our own research. The ballot instructions are somewhat detailed, so be sure to read the directions at the top of the official ballot. Use the example ballot as a reference. Please try to consider the nominees based on their collegiate careers. In many cases nominees have gone on to professional careers but keep the focus on his college career as a player and/or coach. The Veterans (pre-1947) nominees often lack biographical details relative to those in the post-1947 categories. In those cases, the criteria may take on a broader spectrum to include the impact they had on the game/history of college baseball, etc.

Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline.
