As of 2014, transgender studies can boast several conferences, a number of edited collections and thematic journal issues, courses in some college curricula, and—with this inaugural issue of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly—an academic journal with a premier university press. But while the scholarly trope of emergence conjures the cutting edge, it can also be an infantilizing temporality that communicates (and con- tributes to) perpetual marginalization. An emergent field is always on the verge of becoming, but it may never arrive. • Orphan Black"
CLONING THE IDEAL? UNPACKING THE CONFLICTING IDEOLOGIES AND CULTURAL ANXIETIES IN "ORPHAN BLACK" Danielle Marie Howell A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2016 Committee: Bill Albertini, Advisor Kimberly Coates © 2016 Dani Howell All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Bill Albertini, Advisor In this project, I undertake a queer Marxist reading of the television series Orphan Black. Specifically, I investigate the portrayal of women and queer characters in order to discover the conflicting dominant and oppositional ideologies circulating in the series. Doing so allows me to reveal cultural anxieties that haunt the series even as it challenges normative power relations. I argue that while Orphan Black’s narrative subverts traditional gender roles, critiques heteronormativity, and offers sexually fluid queer characters, the series still reifies the traditionally ideal Western female body—thin, attractive, legibly gendered, and fertile. I draw on Antonio Gramsci’s theory of ideology and hegemony, Heidi Hartman’s analysis of Marxism and feminism, and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity to unpack the series’ non-normative depiction of gender and its simultaneous reliance on a stable gender binary. I frame my argument with Todd Gitlin’s understanding of hegemony’s ability to domesticate radical ideas in television. I argue that Orphan Black imagines spaces and scenarios that offer the potential to liberate women from heteronormative expectations and limit patriarchy’s harm. The series privileges a queer female collective and envisions a world where women have freedom from normative conceptions of gender and sexuality.

  • Gender and the Violence(S) of War and Armed Conflict EMERALD STUDIES in CRIMINOLOGY, FEMINISM and SOCIAL CHANGE
Gender and the Violence(s) of War and Armed Conflict EMERALD STUDIES IN CRIMINOLOGY, FEMINISM AND SOCIAL CHANGE Series Editors Sandra Walklate, School of Social Sciences, Monash University, Australia. Kate Fitz-Gibbon, School of Social Sciences at Monash University and Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre, Australia. Jude McCulloch, Monash University and Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre, Australia. JaneMaree Maher, Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Research, Sociology, Monash University, Australia. Emerald Studies in Criminology, Feminism and Social Change offers a platform for innovative, engaged, and forward-looking feminist-informed work to explore the interconnections between social change and the capacity of criminology to grap- ple with the implications of such change. Social change, whether as a result of the movement of peoples, the impact of new technologies, the potential consequences of climate change, or more commonly identified features of changing societies, such as ageing populations, inter-genera- tional conflict, the changing nature of work, increasing awareness of the problem of gendered violence(s), and/or changing economic and political context, takes its toll across the globe in infinitely more nuanced and inter-connected ways than previously imagined. Each of these connections carry implications for what is understood as crime, the criminal, the victim of crime and the capacity of criminology as a disci- pline to make sense of these evolving interconnections. Feminist analysis, despite its contentious relationship with the discipline of criminology, has much to offer in strengthening the discipline to better understand the complexity of the world in the twenty-first century and to scan the horizon for emerging, possible or likely futures.

An Open Access Journal from The Law Brigade (Publishing) Group 233 THE STIFLED VOICES: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN Written by Vasundhara Mahajan* & Rhythm Aggarwal** * 5th Year BCOM LLB Student, Amity Law School Noida, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh ** 5th Year BCOM LLB Student, Amity Law School Noida, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh It’s unfortunate, that we live in the part of a world where women do not want to wake up from sleep, where offences like rape are feared more than death, where 1000 mouths are stuffed and words are shoved. Brutish is the world that leaves tyranny at the hands of men and female voices carried away into silent screams of delirium. Newspapers are flooded and the world talks about sexual assault, but still, rapists go Scott free on the ground no marks on his penis, whereas a ruptured hymen and bite marks on the victim’s body sum up to no resistance. Dating back to history during the early vedic period women were dignified and offered a respectable status in the society, women hood was considered an honourable position, moreover there was sheer agony against the dowry system. In fact the “ladies first” concept was also introduced during the manusmriti tenure. With passage of time the position of women got polluted and eventually deteriorated where they were denied education, were overloaded with responsibilities, a girl child was seen as a burden on the shoulders of the family. Besides this motherhood had been magnified as indemnity of an imposed reality of life in which women were merely consummated for a male progeny.

The second goal of the study is to create a model of the causes of discrimination against men. According to the model, which synthesizes administrative sciences, gender studies and memetics, gender discrimination is caused by a mental diff erentiation between men and women. This diff erentiation tends to lead to the segregation of societies into masculine and feminine activities, and to organizations and net- works which are dominated by either men or by women.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN INDIA: A CASE STUDY ABSTRACT OF THE /^C THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF fioctor of $I)ilDs;opl)p •^ ^'^ IN (, POLITICAL SCIENCE BY RAHAT ZAMANI Under the Supervision of Dr. Rachana Kanshal DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE ALJGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2009 ABSTRACT Today human beings live in the so-called civilized and democratic society that is based on the principles of equality and freedom for all. It automatically results into the non-acceptance of gender discrimination in principle. Therefore, various International Human Rights norms are in place that insist on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and advocate equal rights for women. Womens' year, women decade etc. are observed that led to the creation of mass awareness and sensitization of people about rights of women. Many steps are taken by the government in the form of various policies and programmes to promote the status of women and to realize women's rights. But despite all the efforts, the basic issue that threatens and endangers the very existence of women is the issue of domestic violence against women. John Stuart Mill put it into his book 'the subjection of women' in 1869 that, 'marriage should be thought of as a partnership of equals analogous to a business partnership and the family not a school of despotism but the real school of the virtues of freedom'. Contrary to this women who constitute about half of the world's population are the worst victim of violence and exploitation within home.

A more full-blooded embrace of markets should have brought corruption down and increased competition for the benefi t of customers and citizens alike. But that was not the path we took over the last decade. An expanding pie should have provided adequate resources for off ering safety nets to the really poor even while leaving enough with the exchequer to fund public goods. But India is currently eating the seedcorn of future growth with mindless social spending. Corruption has scaled new heights, politicians have been found hand-in-glove with businessmen to hijack state resources for private ends, and a weakened state is opting for even harsher laws and an INDIA ever-expanding system of unaff ordable doles to maintain itself in power. • Critically Centering Narratives of Urban Two-Spirit Youth
REIMAGINING TWO-SPIRIT COMMUNITY: CRITICALLY CENTERING NARRATIVES OF URBAN TWO-SPIRIT YOUTH by Dana L. Wesley A thesis submitted to the Department of Gender Studies In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (April, 2015) Copyright ©Dana L. Wesley, 2015 Abstract Since its inception in the early 1990s, Two-Spirit has become an identity category that many Indigenous LGBTQ people have taken up as a way to signal both their Indigeneity and their queerness. In the emerging field of Queer Indigenous Studies, Two-Spirit people have become increasingly visible, however, the engagement with youth has been limited and largely confined to the social service sector. Stepping outside of these narrow confines, my research has sought to document how Two-Spirit youth envision their day-to-day lives in relation to their communities. Using an Indigenous methodology to guide the research, I conducted sharing circles in conjunction with the Native Youth Sexual Health Network in order to engage Two-Spirit youth living in Toronto. The sharing circles revealed the limits of Two-Spirit youth’s connections to the idea of Two-Spirit community. Two-Spirit youth called for an end to homophobia and transphobia within their Indigenous communities and expressed their desire to directly participate in nation-building activities as guided by their communities’ elders. The thesis analyzes the ways that Two-Spirit identity gets used in both oppressive and decolonial ways in the context of non-profit and Two-Spirit organizations to show how cultures are built around Two-Spirit identity.

Caste is hostile to individual and collective freedom. In recent years, there have been new attempts to understand the socio-economic conditions of the life of SCs/STs and dalit peoples and household in India. The SCs/STs, and Dalits throughout the country occupy the lowest rank in the caste hierarchy. They are landless agricultural and casual labourers. They are mostly engaged in menial jobs which adds to lower their social and ritual status further and still being suppressed and oppressed in different forms of social, economic and political spheres in many parts of the country.
